Must see, Profound, Great staging, Great singing, Absorbing

See it if U are a neophyte testing out if opera is your thing. This powerful, tragic, beautiful piece will make you fall in love with this form of art

Don't see it if you are unable to put this opera in perspective (it was written in 1898) and get offended by its content.

Masterful, Great singing, Enchanting, Absorbing

See it if you appreciate a wonderful production of an age-old story of love and heartbreak.

Don't see it if you only like extravagant productions and pop songs.

Pretty much what opera is for, Epic, Leave at intermission & it has a happy ending!, Staging is minimal but very effective, Great singing

See it if You like opera even the tiniest amount. This is as good as opera gets. The staging is minimalist but in a way that REALLY works.

Don't see it if I can't imagine a good reason not to see this, honestly.

Exquisite, Great singing, Relevant, Great staging, Absorbing

See it if you liked Tosca or other pieces of Puccini, or if you’re interested in an amazingly beautiful production, with Japanese art references.

Don't see it if you want to avoid sad, tragic stories, even when it’s beautifully sung, acted and produced.

For a previous production

"4.75/5 stars...While audiences love it, it’s not just about singing sustained high notes for dramatic effect; Puccini stretches time and develops a context that ultimately leads to climactic vocal utterances. These moments are choreographed for dramatic power, irony, and a transitory sense of closure...This was an excellent production with music, drama, and staging at its best with a superb orchestra and coterie of vocal luminaries."

For a previous production

"Minghella’s minimalist concept is not only a crowd pleaser, but a remarkably innovative and effective backdrop for Puccini’s tragic opera...Eleonora Buratto triumphed in her role debut as Butterfly. Her sparkling, light soprano, which dazzled so in bel canto roles such as Adina in Donizetti’s 'L’elisir d’amore,' has grown into a voice that soars above Puccini’s far weightier orchestra with no loss of ease and beauty...Conductor Alexander Soddy has a fine feel for Puccini and the Met Orchestra responded in kind."
