Show-Score

Learn about the key characters in the hit musical "Hamilton" and the actors who played them.

The characters in "Hamilton" are real historical figures, but there is some creative license taken by the show's writer, Lin-Manuel Miranda. Learn about how these characters are portrayed in the show, who they were in real life, and who they were played by in the original Broadway cast and after.

Alexander Hamilton
Who he is:
The musical is called "Hamilton," so yes, it's about this guy, Alexander Hamilton, "the ten-dollar founding father without a father." He was also the Secretary of the Treasury from 1789 to 1795. In the musical, he is (accurately) portrayed as an ambitious man who is always working and writing.
Main songs:
Most of them, but some of the big ones are "My Shot," "Say No To This," and "Hurricane"
Played by in the original Broadway cast:
Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also wrote the show's music, lyrics, and book
Has also been played by:
Javier Muñoz, Ryan Vasquez, Jimmie "JJ" Jeter, Michael Luwoye, Austin Scott, Miguel Cervantes (current Broadway cast)

Aaron Burr
Who he is:
The man who (spoiler alert) shot and killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel in 1804. In the musical, he and Hamilton are two sides of the same kind. They have similar backgrounds (both orphans), but different approaches (Hamilton's is to talk, Burr's is to talk less and smile more). Burr is the guy who tries hard but nobody really likes him.
Main songs:
"Wait for It," "Dear Theodosia," "The Room Where it Happens"
Played by in the original Broadway cast:
Leslie Odom, Jr., who won a Tony for the role
Has also been played by:
Daniel Breaker, Brandon Victor Dixon, Jin Ha, Sydney James Harcourt, Nik Walker (current Broadway cast)

Eliza Schuyler
Who she is:
Alexander Hamilton's wife. She also established the first private orphanage in New York City. In the musical, she is portrayed as a devoted wife, mother, and sister, but also a strong and accomplished woman in her own right.

"The Schuyler Sisters," "Helpless," "Burn"
Played by in the original Broadway cast:
Philipa Soo
Has also been played by:
Denée Benton, Lexi Lawson, Krystal Joy Brown (current cast)

Angelica Schuyler
Who she is:
Eliza Schuyler's older sister and Alexander Hamilton's sister-in-law, who is also romantically interested in him. Miranda used material from the real-life, often flirtatious, letters between Angelica and Hamilton in the musical. But in the musical she is also shown as someone who would never betray her sister by acting on her attraction to Hamilton.
Main songs:
"The Schuyler Sisters," "Satisfied"
Played by in the original Broadway cast:
Renée Elise Goldsberry, who won a Tony for the role
Has also been played by:
Jennie Harney-Fleming, Mandy Gonzalez (current Broadway cast)

Peggy Schuyler
Who she is:
In the musical, she is the youngest Schuyler sister, but in real life, there were more than three siblings. She doesn't have a lot of stage time, and the actress who plays her always plays Maria Reynolds in the second act.
