What is Come From Away about?
The story of Come From Away centres around the small community of Gander - a town on the Canadian island of Newfoundland. The limits of Gander and its airport are tested when 38 commercial planes - carrying over 7000 passengers - are grounded after the 9/11 terrorist attacks & the subsequent days-long closure of the U.S. airspace. Come From Away tells the stories of the people on those flights and the resilient spirit of the people of Gander who welcome "the plane people" into their community & their homes.

Although the show is set in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks - and certainly contains some sad moments - Come From Away is ultimately an uplifting musical that serves as a reminder of the capacity for human kindness in the darkest of times. The focus of Come From Away is less on the tragic events of September 11 and more on the generosity of the people of Gander and the relationships formed between the locals & the passengers stranded on the island due to the days-long closure of the U.S. airspace.
Are the characters from Come From Away real?
Most of the characters in Come From Away are based on real people! Examples include Captain Beverly Bass, the first female pilot for American Airlines and Nick & Diane Marson, the British businessman and American woman who met each other & became a couple while stranded in Gander. That said, some of the characters and stories featured in Come From Away are an amalgamation of different people and experiences.
Why do the characters in Come From Away have Irish accents?
Although Gander is located in Newfoundland - a Canadian province - you may have noticed that the Newfoundlanders in Come From Away speak with an Irish lilt. This is because Newfoundland has a deep Irish heritage. In the late 18th century, thousands of people left Ireland for the fishery in Newfoundland and Labrador. The following generations of Irish descendants created a distinctive subculture in Newfoundland with their ancestor's Irish culture (and accent!) at the centre.
