See it if you like van Hove's modern approach. Works for AVFTB, but not Crucible. I missed 50s setting, but liked the focus on words. Strong acting.

Don't see it if you like traditional prodns of classic plays. The barebones staging w sound effects can detract. Mostly, it showcased the powerful emotions.

Also I'm catching up on reviews of shows I saw pre-Show Score. I found some of van Hove's directorial choices jarring and intrusive (mostly the weird drumbeats and sounds...plus the lack of period costumes and bare feet), but by the end could see the trade-off had a pay-off. Also We have seen the Scarlet J. version and the previous one as well as the original. They were all great. Arthur Miller is a hero of mine in the theater world. However this production AT FORT TILDEN IN THE ROCKAWAYS is spectacular. ( even the portrayer of Eddie compares so well to the two Tonys from the previous productions ) The cast is superb. I dare not praise one more that the other The scenic design is spectacular even if on a larger stage. The lighting and music are so well integrated Upper stage mikes amaze when body mikes are so often praised as the NOW. The cast greets the audience after the performance. The pre and post show scenes are so clever. See it if you like gripping, dramatic theater that holds your attention in a refreshing staging that captures the power of the play,

Don't see it if you need 100% realistic sets in order to enjoy, don't like to pay attention to language and little details

Also It's been 2.5 years since I had the great pleasure of seeing Ivo van Hove's remarkable, gripping, and unforgettable production of Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge, and I feel compelled to return to ShowScore and add this extra comment (which wasn't an option in early-2016, when I first rated this show). Hands down, AVftB is one of the most riveting and intelligent productions I've ever seen. That I was sitting in the front row of on-stage seating, a mere inches from the actors (who roamed the boxed-in stage like starved animals; whose eyes burned with fear and intensity; whose eventual blood-slick bodies have left an indelible mark on my mind) likely heightened my experience. I wish I could see this show again. Mark Strong offered a masterclass in acting: his Eddie was so convincing, I had to stop myself from screaming/reaching out at points, hoping to prevent the unraveling of events. van Hove's well-earned Tony for directing this revival is further affirmation of the greatness... Read more Read less

Don't see it if you are uncomfortable with silence / you dislike postmodern restagings

See it if you want to see the best play of the season, you like Miller and haven't already, you like Greek tragedy, or you like essential human drama.

Don't see it if you want props or action. The play drips with tension and emotional power.

Also I sat on the stage of the impeccably well-staged production. I was suspicious of the white cube, but it was a masterstroke, even when raining with blood. If I hadn't been forewarned about the lack of props (and shoes) I don't think I would have noticed, so powerful was the acting. I was concentrated on faces, on postures, on pauses, and language, not on tables and knives.

This play convinced me of Arthur Miller's talent. It's perhaps *the* quintessential play, incorporating so many fundamental human impulses -- family, betrayal, impotence, revenge, lust, love, failure, ambition, exploration.

See it if have the patience for a stripped down production portraying 1950's machismo & morality; the views of immigrants still are relevant today

Don't see it if you didn't like On The Waterfront; get queasy at suggestions of near-incest, perceived homosexuality & the 'motives' of 'foreigners

See it if You appreciate strong and intelligent directorial vision, fine acting, artful and brilliant staging.
