About the show

This new Broadway musical by celebrated singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and innovative director Rachel Chavkin is a love story for today…and always. Winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. More…

"Hadestown" intertwines two mythic tales — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone — as it invites you on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back with a story that pits industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love.

Indulgent, Excruciating, Disappointing, Cliched

See it if (S)Hadestown is so aware of its artistic vision and execution. The story is old and music is bland, meanwhile the acting is quite good.

Don't see it if The biggest head scratcher is that this overrated Tony winner won best set over Beetlejuice.

See it if You love "arty" musicals.

Don't see it if You want to stay awake. Music, story, casting all fail. Honestly, I nodded off several times.

Jejune, Great staging, Great singing, Banal, Indulgent

See it if Great staging/set, Great cast aside from leads, need an hour of explication of Orpheus & Eurydice myth.

Don't see it if you want memorable, intelligent lyrics, like depth to musicals, like leads that can act & sing

Also Audience loved the performance. My wife and I were baffled--worst mate... Read more Read less

Overrated, Slow, Disappointing, Confusing, Cliched

See it if You like when all of a show’s songs sound exactly the same

Don't see it if You want thoughtful and relatable characters or songs you will leave the theater humming.

Overrated, Disappointing, Confusing

See it if you like talented actors and don’t mind an unclear plot requiring narration to tie the story together.

Don't see it if you are looking for a well told story where dialogue and lyrics enhance the experience.

Also I had high expectations for this show, but was unfortunately let down.... Read more Read less

“Mitchell’s fizzy, moody, thrilling new musical....Although the narrative has gained some bulk since 'Hadestown’s' Off Broadway run, it is still wight-thin...Yet somehow that hardly matters: ‘Hadestown’ sweeps you up in its atmospherics and in the intensity of its eco-Marxist vision of solidarity...

“A seamless theatrical experience, this beguiling, virtually sung-through musical is notable for the expressive beauty of its score, the dark imagination of its stage pictures and the clarity of its storytelling. Performed by a first-rate cast and played with spirited feeling by seven onstage mus...
