About the show

One of the world’s most epic modern myths comes to Broadway in this new musical that employs an innovative mix of robotics, puppet, and stagecraft to bring the legendary ape to life. More…

Follow an ambitious young actress and a maverick filmmaker as they voyage from the bustling streets of 1930s New York to an uncharted island to capture the greatest wonder the world has ever seen. At the center of this 21st-century reimagining: a 2,000-pound gorilla brought roaring to life by a team of seamlessly integrated artists and technicians. A larger-than-life encounter with a legend that’s always been too big to contain. Written by Jack Thorne ('Harry Potter and the Cursed Child'), directed and choreographed by Olivier Award winner Drew McOnie, with a new score by Marius de Vries ('La La Land') and Eddie Perfect ('Strictly Ballroom').

Overrated, Slow, Insipid, Fluffy, Excruciating

See it if you want to see a puppet on stage with horrible written songs and the music was horrendous.

Don't see it if you want to see a better musical on broadway or really anywhere else

49
Spectacle, Loud, Great staging

See it if Nearly every element of this show is pretty terrible. But the ape and the lighting design are worth the price of admission alone.

Don't see it if I definitely will not judge you if you skip it.

Disappointing, Excruciating, Banal, Bad score, Good set

See it if The ape is the only reason to see this. Bad score, mediocre dancing, 2nd rate leads. The set is not bad. all told you do better at Disney

Don't see it if you want a show with a first rate score, dancing and singing. This is more an excuse for the ape puppet (which is good) than a musical

Ambitious, Disappointing

See it if you love a mess of a musical, or if you just really want to see the giant puppet.

Don't see it if you like quality musical theater. This is not that.

Also The puppet is impressive. Fine. But the songs are CRAZY. Techno? Laser... Read more Read less

Cliched, Disappointing, Excruciating, Terrible writing

See it if only if you are burning with curiosity to see the puppet. it is literally the only highlight but even that feat can't carry the show

Don't see it if you don't want to put yourself through excruciating story telling. the writing is probably the worst since Paramore...

See it if you enjoy watching and being amazed at bad movies - this is a stage version of that. How on earth did this happen?! Please read on below

Don't see it if you can't find a sick sense of enjoyment out of watching a dumpster fire happen right in front of you Please read below

Don't see it if if you are looking for a good show. The story and lyrics are terrible. The show does not even really make sense.

Disappointing, Banal, Excruciating, Hilarious

See it if You have nothing else to see? You want a lesson in how not to write a book? Or if you want to see actors trying to make this work.

Don't see it if You have any other options. Seriously. It’s bad.

Terrible score, Cool puppet, Indulgent, Insipid, Ambitious

See it if To experience $35MM worth of IMAX motion effects & cool Kong puppet operated by a talented crew.

Don't see it if You are expecting a genuine Broadway musical with a quality story & score. You get a headache from loud noises.

Also In absolute terms, this was the worst show i’ve ever seen on Broadway.... Read more Read less

Disappointing, Excruciating, Vacuous, Superficial, Gimmicky

See it if you have a strong desire to see the puppet. Possibly the worst major production I have ever seen in terms of story and creativity.

Don't see it if you expect to see a full, creative and well scripted show.

Also The acting/dancing talent was totally wasted on this show. Don't hold ... Read more Read less

Awful

See it if Where to begin...you want to waste your money on this terribly executed "musical"

Don't see it if You expect a high quality production of what could have been a very fun, campy show about a shackled monkey.

Disappointing, Great staging, Excruciating, Overrated, Fluffy

See it if You want to be dazzled by special effects (the giant puppet and lighting/projections) and don't need much else to have a good time.

Don't see it if You actually want a musical: some of the numbers are nothing more than instrumental scores for action on stage. It's all about that puppet!

40
Excruciating, Cliched, Disappointing

See it if you like theme park shows about gorillas.

Don't see it if you want good music or an interesting book. Nothing to see here but a big monkey puppet. This show does not deserve to be on Broadway.

Entertaining

See it if you like really spectacular effects and want to see an amazing puppet moved with great skill by puppeteers who are incredible.

Don't see it if you want a good score - a good book and good choreography.

Banal, Disappointing, Excruciating, Insipid, Slow

See it if you believe that sound volume is a proxy for quality and you like 2 story puppets. Have I mentioned the giant puppet?

Don't see it if you're looking for a show that's remotely worth your money. If you can snag free tickets and have nothing else to do, I suppose you can go.

Also It seems to me that the creative team spent so much time figuring out ... Read more Read less

Slow, Overrated, Dull

See it if You want to lose hours of your life. Songs are terrible, singing isn't great. Even the ape wasn't impressive. Only the LED backdrop was good

Don't see it if You want quality a story, and product. I feel sorry for the singers and dancers who are pouring their hearts out - Little to work with.

Ambitious, Overrated, Insipid, Disappointing, Cliched

See it if Hated it. Yes, the King Kong itself was fantastic to see and they did a great job on that. But that’s good for about 5 min.

Don't see it if Don’t see unless you absolutely must see the puppetry or really love the King Kong movie and feel compelled.

Disappointing, Ambitious, Banal

See it if You have the need to see a huge puppet

Don't see it if The puppet was cool for 2 minutes, this show drags on for 2+ hours. good luck.

Great staging, No book, Nonsensical

See it if you want to see the puppet

Don't see it if you enjoy a show that has a good story and memorable music, this isn't it! I could go on for an hour about how bad this show was.

Also The songs were not memorable, I can't even recall one. The lead actres... Read more Read less

Banal, Insipid, Excruciating, Disappointing, Unimpressive

See it if ONLY and even then with reservations if you are a king kong fan ...maybe if you are a puppeteer fan

Don't see it if I hate to see someone or something fail, I knew it would be hokey but not as horrible as it was - I was rooting for the planes at the end

10
Insipid, Disappointing, Ambitious, Overrated, Slow

See it if dont. just don't. the puppet is the ONLY redeeming factor in this entire show.

Don't see it if You want an entertaining show that moves you. Or catchy songs. Some of the music sounds like techno pop from the 90s

20
Banal, Cliched, Disappointing, Ridiculous, Annoying

See it if If you like spectacle over content, this is for you. If you love the original Kong...stay away!

Don't see it if So many reasons not to see this. Music is dreadful...Book is dreadful. Acting is laughable.

Also Worse of all, they made the story so polically correct that any tensio... Read more Read less

Slow, Overrated, Disappointing

See it if you want to see a giant ape puppet and the people moving it. If you like bad music and lyrics and the worst choreography I ever saw.

"Green: A car wreck of clichés like that simply can’t put a feminist story across meaningfully. Or any story, really — and that’s a bigger problem than the bad score and sluggish 20-foot marionette...Brantley: The story — and the music and the dancing — are basically just filler until Kong shows ...

"The titular creation is truly impressive: a 20-foot, 2,000-pound animatronic marvel that would be the pride of any amusement-park thrill ride...Yet this very special effect is trapped in a show that is mostly pretty awful. It pads its spectacular attraction in a skeletal, hackneyed story...The t...

"King Kong–the–creature is a truly marvelous feat—of design, of engineering, of choreography, of performers and operators and stage managers functioning at bomb-diffusion levels of precision—and 'King Kong'-–the–show is, beyond its spectacle, generic. It’s an amped-up blockbuster with largely for...

“Kong is the show’s true star. He’s huge, muscular, and bottomlessly dark—all black and gray. His hands and feet are operated, in minutest detail, by a small, dancerly army, and his face moves via uncannily precise—and, I’ll admit, touching...There aren’t any instantly classic songs in the show, ...
