Kinky Boots (Broadway)

See it if you love musicals. Bold, brassy Boots tries hard to please. Hero saves the factory AND wins the girl AND makes a best drag-queen-friend.

Don't see it if you want consistent entertainment. Some songs dull. All lyrics are subpar. The book is meh. Plot unconvincing (manufactured arguments).

Don't see it if you’re seeking nuanced portrayals of trans folks (aren’t all trans women brassy nightclub performers w/ sage advice and flamboyant fashion?)

Also Doesn’t hold a candle to the other Best Musical winners currently on Broadway, but still a fun and unchallenging time with big easy laughs and high energy numbers. Some really winning choreography at the close of act 1. Surprisingly wholesome. (Don’t bring young kids or anything but I don’t recall anything especially profane or raunchy in this show.) Don't see it if You need your script sharp, your music especially tuneful, or your characters less than broad. It has a good heart but isn't well done.

See it if You enjoy musicals similar to Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. I loved Priscilla, but not Kinky Boots, but they were in the same genre.

Don't see it if You want to see a contemporary musical of a traditional nature.

See it if you think drag queens and attitude are hilarious. Some catchy tunes, but empty.

Don't see it if you're looking for the best musical on Bway. It won the Tony in a year without much competition.

Don't see it if You worship the movie Kinky Boots, which was fabulous

See it if you like big Broadway musicals, disco music & drag. Mark Ballas is a fish out of water and his singing voice is not Broadway-worthy.

Don't see it if if you want anything more than a fluffy "accept others" "we'll turn this situation around" story - or are uncomfortable about drag queens.

See it if you want to see Billy Eliot meets The Full Monty. Guaranteed not to offend even the homophobic
