Fierstein and Lauper have crafted a gay tolerance plea that’s safe enough to take your grandmother to, but they’ve left out the guts that might make it worth seeing for her or for you."

There is little doubt that the intention of Cyndi Lauper, who wrote the music and lyrics and Harvey Fierstein, who wrote the book, was to improve on their source material.
