About the show

After making its premiere in at the National Theatre in London, the adaptation of the Oscar-winning film comes to Broadway, starring Tony and Emmy winner Bryan Cranston. More…

Howard Beale, news anchorman, isn’t pulling in the viewers. In his final broadcast he unravels live on screen. But when ratings soar, the network seizes on their newfound populist prophet, and Howard becomes the biggest thing on TV. "Network" depicts a media landscape where opinion trumps fact. Comic and hair-raising by turns, the iconic film by Paddy Chayefsky won four Academy Awards in 1976. Directed by Tony Award winner Ivo van Hove.

Dazzling technology, Devoid of true emotion, Lots of speeches, Edgy, Relevant

See it if you love Cranston. Or you love hi-tech prodns (creative screens, filming). Insights into dangers of TV news and of lg multi-natl corps.

Don't see it if you want 3-D characters. IVH always misses humor/emotions. It's all surface. Script is repetitive. Room to cut. Some annoying aud particptn.

Thought-provoking, Dizzying, Relevant, Great acting, Great staging

See it if Multimedia spectacle dazzles the senses while delivering a blistering attack on hypocrisy and complicity. Show audience plays TV audience.

Don't see it if You don't want to be bombarded with philosophical challenges. This is an intellectual play, not an emotionally moving one.

Lacking, Great staging, Intense, Ambitious, Great lead performance

See it if you want to see a towering, fierce, visceral performance by Cranston & the innovative, multi-media creativity of director van Hove.

Don't see it if u expect the rest of the cast to be fully-fleshed characters. [The thrill of Cranston's Beale is countered by the icy, shallow support cast]

Also This conceptual production of Chayefsky's classic, prescient screenpla... Read more Read less

Great staging, Great acting, Clever, Ambitious, Absorbing

See it if fan of the film, Cranston or von Hove, clever stagings, creative projections & video, a live outdoor scene, relevant subject matter

Don't see it if don't like media stories, didn't like original film, don't like extensive use of videos, long 135 min. intermissionless play

First 2/3rds absolutely riveting, last 1/3rd bites off too much; bryan cranston, in performance of great power and range, almost certain tony nominee

See it if brilliant portrayal how newsman driven 2 stir revolt vs mendacious TV, then exploited by forces he criticizes; amazing stagecraft/Cranston

Don't see it if overkill; attempt 2 show how deceitful '60s/'70s TV led 2 today's evils, infotainment/FoxNews/Trump/global corporate dominance, is too much

Also The set of the newsroom designed by designer extraordinaire, Jan Versw... Read more Read less

Great use of video, Ambitious, Thought-provoking, Great staging, Absorbing

See it if you are willing to accept that serious ideas expressed through humor and outrage are there to wake you up! Loved the improve section.

Don't see it if audience members eating dinner on stage will be a distraction. It is unclear to me why they are there?

Ambitious, Absorbing, Great staging, Great acting, Relevant

See it if Brit import update of "The Emperor's New Clothes," with Cranston as full-on bell ringer. Live video adds layer of social-media immediacy.

Don't see it if All the busy multimedia staging & everyday news cycle "noise" distraction cause plot to suffer:How far we've fallen since film's predictions

Absorbing, Great acting, Great staging, Thought-provoking, Relevant

See it if incredible, intense performance by Bryan Cranston. Dynamic Stagin, v. fun to watch. Technically impresive. Great updating of Network movie.

Don't see it if you don't want a loud, intense play of a story you have already seen (if you've seen the movie).

Also I was surprised at how engaged I was. I would definitely recommend it.... Read more Read less

Ambitious, Dizzying, Great acting, Great staging, Relevant

See it if Cranston gives a powerful, breathtaking performance ! You can’t help but compare influence of media in 1976 and 2019 ! Seeing is believing !

Don't see it if The only reason not to see this would be if you can’t deal with a great amount of cacophony both audibly and visually.

Great acting, Great staging, Edgy, Relevant, Bryan cranston! bryan cranston! bryan cranston!

See it if you want to experience a perfect performance by Cranston; great production and staging; good acting by all but it's Cranston's show.

Don't see it if you think you'll be escaping reality. Certainly, in this production everything old is new again with ties to our present conundrum.

Also Cranston is so large on the stage that he dwarfs everyone and everythi... Read more Read less

Absorbing, Great acting, Great staging, Edgy, Dizzying

See it if Ivo von Hove’s amazing set design, and Bryon Cranston’s frenzied and passionately quirky performance energize the large cast.

Don't see it if You dislike sets with a lot happening at all times. Have no interest in broadcast news. Cringe during simulated sex scenes. 2 hrs no inter.

Also A must see for Bryan Cranston’s performance at full throttle 8 times a... Read more Read less

As good as expected

See it if You want to see an amazing performance by a lead actor and also a well-balanced supporting cast

Don't see it if You will be bothered by the big screen they use on stage I am usually distracted by stuff like this but here it was OK

Cranston over-the-top performance, Network studio stage set, Unique theatre experience

See it if American society reflected in newscast measured by eyeballs, news company measured by stock value, finally by emotional impact on individual

Don't see it if You are bothered by lots of busy camera work, bright lights, restaurant on stage, and distracting secondary romantic subplot.

83
Absorbing, Ambitious, Great acting, Relevant, Great staging

See it if you appreciate great acting, innovative staging, and relevant themes involving the power of the media. Cranston does not disappoint.

Don't see it if you prefer more simple staging that doesn't require watching projection/monitor at times

91
Great staging, Stunning, Edgy, Epic

See it if you enjoy multimedia elements in an epic surreal story with an incredible cast. Not to be missed.

Don't see it if you dislike video screens at live theater and dystopian themes, or depictions of sex live onstage.

Entertaining, Great acting, Over directed, Uneven acting, Disappointing

See it if you like Bryan Cranston. He is perfection.Older actors are all good.Young 'uns are weak.Van Hove,as usual,is all sizzle, very little steak

Don't see it if you want fully developed characters.Staging is terrific, but clearly Van Hove worked on design rather than acting. That's bad direction to me

78
Indulgent, Intelligent, Great writing, Great acting, Absorbing

See it if Cranston was amazing. I will be shocked if he doesn’t win the Tony. Every second he was onstage was magic.

Don't see it if I’ve seen Maslany be better in other things. Goldwyn was what he usually is - kinda caddish. Hated the staging.

75
Great acting, Quirky, Thought-provoking, Absorbing

See it if if you are a fan of the actors, & like the story; if you enjoy soliloquies about the state of our culture and like outlandish characters.

Don't see it if you prefer sane & understandable characters rather those representing extreme positions, & do not enjoy complex expositions about our world.

85
Great acting, Thought-provoking, Relevant, Ambitious, Edgy

See it if Love great performances of familiar work that is so relevant it feels like it was written last week. Brilliant set and use of the 4th wall

Don't see it if need the script to be even and flawless. The flaws cause it to drag slighly.

Absorbing, Entertaining, Intelligent, Thought-provoking, Relevant

See it if amazing performance by Bryan Cranston and Ivo Van Hove's innovative staging. Period.

Don't see it if need all acting to be at that level (although N. Wyman was excellent), slow speechy last quarter, video & live action at same time too much

Also I loved I. van Hove's work on The Damned with its combination of video... Read more Read less

See it if you’re a fan of the excellent cast, including Bryan Cranston, Tony Goldwyn, Tatiana Maslany etc or if you’re curious about the unusual set.

Don't see it if you’re not that interested in the story of a privileged white man coming apart due to losing just a bit of his privilege. Yawn.

Absorbing, Thought-provoking, Edgy, Cranston offers intelligent acting, Innovative staging/design

See it if you like edgier sociopolitical, timely and timeless works that catalyze your imagination; want to leave the theatre questioning your world.

Don't see it if not a fan of the ubiquitous Ivo van Hove and his penchant for boundary-pushing staging and design, and surprising re-imagining of stories.

Also Bryan Cranston is phenomenal, committing to every role (and nearly alw... Read more Read less

Great acting, Great staging, Intense, Ambitious, Thought-provoking

See it if You are a fan of Ivo Van Hove’s unique direction and Bryan Cranston’s excellent acting. The lighting and the staging were also outstanding.

Don't see it if You don’t like a frenetic atmosphere. You don’t want to see the mental collapse of a human being.

Banal, Great acting, Disappointing, Indulgent

See it if great acting in an okay play. intense yet brought out the humor in the situation

Don't see it if really two plays in one in that it shifts. 2nd half is too contemporary yet still set in the time period. over Ivo Van Hove's direction.

"And if you’re a glutton for great, high-risk acting, you owe Mr. Cranston the courtesy — and yourself the thrill — of watching his self-immolation...If the bravura dementia of his Howard makes much of the rest of the show seem as two-dimensional as a flat TV screen, it’s a trade-off I’m willing ...

"Bryan Cranston has a hell of a mad scene in the middle of 'Network'...It’s riveting stuff, because Cranston is an extraordinary actor, and also because, for an extended moment in this tech blitz of a show, there appears to be a human being onstage. Paddy Chayefsky’s Oscar-winning screenplay was ...

"There’s something flat about van Hove’s production. It’s got all the requisite external flash, and Lee Hall’s adapted script is clear enough in its outlining of the story’s heightening stakes — the problem is, we recognize those stakes intellectually, but we don’t really feel them...van Hove has...
