See it if you want to have a grand time. Don't let the off-the-mark NYT's review overshadow your decision to see it. Read the raves, do the work & go!
Don't see it if you don't want to experience the polish & expertise of Hal Prince, Susan Stroman & their wonderful cast, not to mention all the creators.
See it if you love classic musicals and well-known showtunes. This might be the best revue I've ever seen.
Don't see it if You are looking for something with more of a plotline.
See it if You like musical revues. Performances were A+! Singing was divine. Lots of classic songs from famous shows. Had low expectations-- LOVED it.
Don't see it if You want to learn something about Hal Prince. It's really just a Greatest Hits song/dance show with very little info on the man himself.
See it if you enjoy musical theater. Yes, it's a revue, but it's some of the best songs from some of the best shows - with staging. Talent abounds.
Don't see it if This is a biography of Hal Prince through his direction of plays, rather than telling you about his life. I enjoyed and recommend the show.
See it if You want great, high-energy performances in a fun show for musical theater fanatics (complete with gorgeous and diverse sets)!
Don't see it if You don't know the songs - the show is more fun if you know Prince's shows before going in - or if you want a show with a story.
See it if Spending two and a half hours seeing excellent performances of classic musicals is your idea of heaven.
Don't see it if If you want the show to be something other than what it is. Read more
See it if you want tr relive some songs from some great and some not so great musicals.. The talent is there.
Don't see it if There is no plot.. You do not get the the original talent. One cannot really do a tribute to a director/producer via songs.
See it if You love the music of some of the great Broadway productions, and you want to relax and be entertained. Yasbeck does an amazing tap number.
Don't see it if Do not like Broadway musical revues.
"There's a lot to like in this fond and often vivid scrapbook of numbers from one of the American theatre's most astonishing careers...Nearly everybody in the company has his or her moment to shine...'Prince' can't escape being a bit of a hodgepodge...Among the hits, there are several notable misses...And sometimes Prince and Stroman have difficulty matching material to the skills of their cast...It's hard to escape a sense of sheer astonishment at the breadth of its subject's achievement."

"Any show that offers moments from so many beloved musicals on the basis that all of them were helmed by one person in the major role(s) of director or producer is fine by me, regardless of the lack of any other shared through-line...The entertainment level here is generally very high...Most of the material is well matched to the performers. That said, a few odd decisions have been made that mar the second half."

"The patchy, shallow affair feels so much like a cruise-ship entertainment, I started getting seasick...'Prince of Broadway' feels like a missed opportunity to explore a major career and share lessons from show business. It’s a victory lap without visible struggle or heartache, a theatrical memoir by someone fuzzy on details or who won’t open up...Musical selections are gamely performed by a cast of troupers who have varying success putting a fresh spin on iconic numbers."

"A polished but disappointingly rote roll-call of many of the highlights of Prince’s nearly seven decades in the theater...Even the most skilled seam-sealer cannot make a revue of such diverse material into a conceptually cohesive and theatrically compelling evening...Well, enough gloom. For musical theater lovers, the show will remain an indispensable ticket, a pilgrimage to a shrine, even if the visit doesn’t burnish your Broadway-love as you had hoped."

"If you don't expect this to be a really enlightening inside look into Harold Prince the man and his process...there's much to enjoy here...The show gets off to a great start with its clever and comprehensive overture...Ultimately, the numerous other highs and polished staging can't avoid a mishmash feel to the show as a whole. Somehow, it just doesn't really add up as the fully connected, interestingly detailed musical memoir it aims to be."

"Musical theatre nerds will likely get chills multiple times...Despite its many appealing elements, 'Prince' doesn’t match up to other 'career retrospective' shows...The breadth of styles Prince’s career encompasses is, ironically, something of a weakness where a revue is concerned. That said, there are far worse ways to spend an evening than watching some of the most talented people in New York perform some of musical theatre’s most iconic and beloved songs."

"If you’re expecting deep-rooted insights into the extraordinary producer-director Harold Prince’s life story, you’ll be sorely disappointed. But if you want to relive the musical memories of some of the hits and flops of his seven decades in theater, with a cast that will many times blow the roof off, you’ve come to the right place...Two and half hours that fly by...There are real showstoppers that include Yazbeck as Buddy...But my hat is off to Skinner who takes your breath away as Joanne."

"This is a revue of Harold Prince’s work. Look at the work! Sure, you can complain that you don’t like the structure but that’s the setting, not the jewel. Frankly, in the most fundamental musical theater way, 'Prince of Broadway' is a pure, audience-pleasing show and should be appreciated for its gleaming showmanship. Given the chance, the audience will prove the critics wrong about this show. And glory to the performers who make it work so beautifully!"
