Great singing, Resonant, Masterful

See it if You want to see a show that deserved a lot better from the critics. It’s just stuffed with showstoppers.

Don't see it if You have little interest in one of the titans of American musical theatre: Hal Prince.

Entertaining, Great singing, Intelligent, First half: wonderful!, Second half: too long

See it if you love musicals of all kinds, power ballads belted out non-stop. You appreciate Sondheim. A show-stopping dance number.

Don't see it if you hate musicals. You hate Bway type belting. You want context for scenes from other shows; your tolerance for Sondheim is tiny. Read more

See it if you loved any/all of Hal Prince's shows. Some of the 36 songs will bring back great memories; others not but all are worth it. Standing "O"!

Don't see it if Musicals are not your thing.

DC Theatre Scene

"Despite what seems an ill-conceived idea, and for all its flaws, Prince and Stroman do manage to find some sweet spots in staging this highlights reel of a show...The intention here is surely to put the songs within the rich context of each musical, but it doesn’t consistently work...However much 'Prince of Broadway' may disappoint as a whole, though, there is no denying how effectively it serves as a showcase for its cast."

The Clyde Fitch Report
August 24th, 2017

"'Prince of Broadway 'shouldn’t be anything but top-drawer entertainment. It takes the form of a revue that Prince has directed as a valentine to himself...And, as such, it lives right up to its promise...Thompson doesn’t delve deeply into Prince’s contributions...Dance has been an eminent element in Prince musicals. But for some reason — and with no less than Susan Stroman on hand — there’s little beyond Yazbeck’s spectacular tap solo. "

Upstage-Downstage

“The lumpish ‘Prince of Broadway’ that opened last week is the equivalent of channel surfing for Broadway buffs. It is all randomness and disconnect as it caroms from one brief encounter to the next…A game but decidedly overwhelmed cast is hauled out to perform number after number…There is only the barest of attempts to provide any sort of context…‘Prince of Broadway’ is ambitiously filled with an avalanche of ideas that rarely come to life.”

Times Square Chronicles

“Doesn’t highlight the best of Prince's career. The song choices are strange and the performances not always stellar. Who does come across as a star is Tony Yazbeck, who monopolizes the stage with his superb singing and excellent dance skills…This show is completely worth Tony Yazbeck’s brilliant rendition of ‘The Right Girl’…It may seem like I am being hard on 'Prince of Broadway,' but I still recommend it.”

The Wrap

"The star...is Stephen Sondheim. Impressive turns are also delivered by Leonard Bernstein and Jerome Kern...'Prince' enters Broadway heaven when these three composers’ work is delivered by an ensemble that’s often vocally stunning. Much less enthralling are those moments that serve up tunes by Webber...Also dreadful is the book...Goes for that wow factor, with everybody trying to outdo each other...It’s disappointing then to see Prince not rein in some of this revue’s singers."

The Huffington Post

"An entertaining sampler revue, featuring an accomplished cast...Most of the actors have at least one highspot...The success of a substantial part of the evening is quite a victory, due in part to the variegated talents of the performers; the canny and well-practiced skill of both Prince and Stroman; and the musical ministrations of Brown...All this aside the entertainment wears thin in the second act...The oddity here is that some of the best material does not necessarily come across."

Gotham Playgoer

“When I get the chance to hear over 30 songs, mostly from shows I greatly enjoyed, performed by talented actors backed by a 16-piece orchestra, I am not about to grumble over what could have been better…Despite all the nits one can pick, the bottom line is that I found the show thoroughly entertaining. The cast of nine is wonderful…If you are a fan of musicals, by all means go. There’s something here for everyone.”

"Perfectly enjoyable, but not the stunning blockbuster we’ve come to expect from Mr. Prince...The material doesn’t flow smoothly or fit together neatly...Thompson’s narration provides scant context and fails to tie together the wildly divergent selections...There is much to relish even if the overall package is not greater than the sum of its exemplary parts...There is so much potential here. Too bad the experience was like leafing through a photo album."
