After a hit run Off-Broadway, Jeremy O. Harris's new play comes to Broadway. This provocative work aims to rip apart history to shed new light on the nexus of race, gender, and sexuality in 21st century America. More…
From the show:
The Old South lives on at the MacGregor Plantation - in the breeze, in the cotton fields...and in the crack of the whip. It's an antebellum fever-dream, where fear and desire entwine in the looming shadow of the Master's House. Jim trembles as Kaneisha handles melons in the cottage, Alana perspires in time with the plucking of Phillip's fiddle in the boudoir, while Dustin cowers at the heel of Gary's big, black boot in the barn. Nothing is as it seems, and yet everything is as it seems.
See it if you believe that the races can never get past the effects of slavery.Bottom line is that blacks&whites can't relate fully without racism.
Don't see it if are tired of gratuitous nudity. What really upset me was that I believe that we should work toward being color blind.Play says its impossible
See it if Expertly constructed, elicts wide range of drama to comedy, wonderfully talented cast
Don't see it if To paraphrase an actual line "This all feels like bullshit" permeated my thoughts for final 2/3rds of the play
See it if You want to see a clever idea.
Don't see it if It's hard to describe without giving anything away but a clever plot is ruined with a truly awful opening, messy pacing and confused themes.
See it if you want boundaries pushed. Not sure which boundaries, the show was confusing, only the homosexual couple's convo seemed believable.
Don't see it if you are triggered by discussions of therapy, sex, interracial relationships, you want a musical, comedy, or a light evening
See it if you want to be challenged & perhaps made to feel uncomfortable during a provocative show about race relations. It's certainly bold.
Don't see it if you're looking for something buoyant or straightforward. I found most of this play a chore to sit through. Not fun. It also needs trimming.
See it if You want to explore black/white relationships. At times the show was funny.
Don't see it if The therapists were exceedingly annoying and are why I gave a low rating to this show.
See it if you are interested in the history of race relations and want a very different approach to the subject.
Don't see it if you are offended by gratuitous nudity and onstage depiction of sex, or triggered by (or just don't want to see) sexual aggression.
See it if You want to see the new trendy play all the celebrities are talking about. Acting is good, provocative script, with cliched characters.
Don't see it if Nudity, strong, sexual situations.. Becomes tedious and longwinded..no intermission.
See it if you don't mind having an important subject trivialized or if you don't mind swimming through a ridiculous premise to get to some good acting
Don't see it if are hopeful that there will be a revelation of some kind.
See it if you want to take it off your list of plays to see. I wasnt sure what was going on at first. Didnt get the play until half way thru it
Don't see it if you have a problem seeing types of slavery depicted on stage
See it if you want to see a show that will make you have a reaction, whether it be love or hate. Also, if you like less traditional forms of theater.
Don't see it if you don't care for gimmick plays. While the premise has merit, the execution fails. The play is long and continues to hit the same point.
See it if Interested in Self-styled edgy, shocking, and racial themes
Don't see it if Designed to shock, felt it more like a saturday night live skit
See it if You enjoy conflicting emotions. Yes, it is provocative, but a disappointment overall with its ponderous intellectualising.
Don't see it if You don’t enjoy cruelty and a negative view of the potential of human relationships.
See it if You want to see a show on Broadway that normally never shows up above 14th Street. Plus, Jeremy O. Harris has talent and something to say.
Don't see it if You expect something well-written and daring that deserves to be on Broadway. What a crashing disappointment. This Emperor has NO CLOTHES.
See it if Great acting. You like a script that leaves most issues unresolved. You don't care about anything other than seeing nudity.
Don't see it if Offended by total nudity. You desire a modicum of coherence. NOT recommended for those under 18 as the themes definitely include "adult"
See it if you want to be challenged by difficult and sensitive social issues - you are drawn to bold and unique theater
Don't see it if you are offended by explicit sexual language and acts - you tend to be uncomfortable with the important subject of race relations
See it if You’re interested in the sexual lives of interracial couples. Or want to see something designed to make you uncomfortable.
Don't see it if You’re easily offended by nudity, sexual themes, or rape play.
See it if See if you want to see Broadway's most hyped and talked about show this season.
Don't see it if Don't see if you're uncomfortable with nudity and racially charged language.
See it if If you are into intense cerebral mind play and thought provoking shock and awe.
Don't see it if If you are squeamish, don't like nudity and are homophobic, this is not the show for you.
See it if You appreciate long, drawn-out scenes of role play followed by long, drawn-out scenes of “therapy.”
Don't see it if You want a quick paced, intelligent, and timely discussion of the role of race in relationships.
