After a hit run Off-Broadway, Jeremy O. Harris's new play comes to Broadway. This provocative work aims to rip apart history to shed new light on the nexus of race, gender, and sexuality in 21st century America. More…
From the show:
The Old South lives on at the MacGregor Plantation - in the breeze, in the cotton fields...and in the crack of the whip. It's an antebellum fever-dream, where fear and desire entwine in the looming shadow of the Master's House. Jim trembles as Kaneisha handles melons in the cottage, Alana perspires in time with the plucking of Phillip's fiddle in the boudoir, while Dustin cowers at the heel of Gary's big, black boot in the barn. Nothing is as it seems, and yet everything is as it seems.
See it if you like plays that challenge your thinking and assumptions
Don't see it if If you're not comfortable dealing with sexual topics onstage
See it if This show is very intense! You will walk out of the show with a new perspective. It makes you think and react.
Don't see it if You are offended by plots of an overtly sexual nature. One person who came with us still says she is traumatized 2 months after she saw it.
See it if Interesting premise. Really great acting all of them!! Great setting.
Don't see it if Uncomfortably long. The 3 scenes are interesting but all overstate their welcome. Not sure I understood what the author was trying to say.
See it if Excellent performances from cast. Unexpected & story that's both entertaining & thought provoking.Would have rated it 80 if it was shorter
Don't see it if I enjoyed all three parts of the play but felt each was too long. 130min w/ no intermission would have been better at 90min.
See it if A play that is very funny at times, edgy at times. About slavery and race. Interesting sets. If you want a play that is rawandthat goes deep
Don't see it if The play is 2 hrs without intermission. Strong language, nudity and strong subject matter.
See it if ur compelled by the edgy title to see what the buzz is about in this over-the-top, glib interracial couples therapy session & its aftermath.
Don't see it if ur not interested in an agenda-driven screed w/caricatures instead of characters, provocation for shock sake & pretension instead of reality
See it if Harris uses 3 interracial relationships to explore the timely nexus of race, gender & sexual politics Funny, profane, dangerous often savage
Don't see it if Ambition exceeds craft here with Harris offtimes getting tangled in his own mis-en-scene Ideas are launched like projectiles often missing
See it if for something new that challenges you on the topic of race, rarely so bluntly confronted in three scenarios and a group therapy session.
Don't see it if you are not prepared for frank sexual talk and action, including nudity and the raw feelings expressed when partners are pressed to respond.
See it if hilarious slave master role playing; delicious satire of overwrought group therapy; upends conventional perspectives on race
Don't see it if counterintuitive racial perspectives not fully explained; group therapy satire goes on far too long; conclusion unsatisfactory
See it if You enjoy “provocative”, issue-based plays that confront racial inequity.
Don't see it if You dislike plays hovering between realism & farce, without knowing which direction to go. This is smart at times, but too much felt phony.
See it if you're interested in raw emotion and fantasy mixed with a lot of reality; acting is superb all around; great writing, absorbing, emotional.
Don't see it if you don't want to leave a play with it clinging to your heart & mind; this is not kid stuff; second half could use a 10 minute edit.
See it if Up for a show that provocatively deals with race, sex, relationships, slavery, group therapy, which at times is uncomfortably funny.
Don't see it if you don't want to be challenged; simulated sex & nudity offends you; a bit too long; disturbing & somewhat confusing conclusion.
See it if You would enjoy an unusual and comedic presentation of racial conflicts, biracial relationships and sexual dysfunction.
Don't see it if If you are offended by racial slurs, overt sexuality and nudity, or if you would be offended by the unusual treatment of sexuality.
See it if you enjoy radical and creative ways to explore important topics; in this case the politics of race. This is an important play.
Don't see it if you can't sit for over two hours without a break (painful for me) and object to raunchy content.
See it if you want a terrific new unconventional play, something rarely seen on B'way, just GO!
Don't see it if you are looking for something light. Though hilarious at times, this is strong stuff. If simulated sex and XXX language offend, don"t go.
See it if you like outrageous. First 45 min very very funny. Black/white (ish) relationships. Original, different. Excellent acting. Interesting sets.
Don't see it if you are easily offended by race, slavery etc. plays. Long play, no intermission. Very raw, some nudity, but extremely funny. Not for all.
Also second half at therapy session too long, should be cut.
See it if you like "disruptive" theatre. There are some good themes, but the surrounding parts leave you disappointed.
Don't see it if You want a thoughtful story that makes discussing with friends possible. The bad parts are so bad, they overwhelm the message.
See it if You want to see a thought provoking play about race, culture, and relationships.
Don't see it if You are uncomfortable with sex scenes, nudity, and two hours without an intermission.
See it if A clever, intelligent play with surprises. This production surpasses the Off-Bway version in terms of set and staging. Cast is excellent.
Don't see it if You may be offended by issues pertaining to sexual behaviors, racial issues, and slavery.
See it if you want FUNNY and PROVOCATIVE exploration of race, gender, sexuality, sex, and power in relationships. SUPERB direction & acting by all 8.
Don't see it if you're uncomfortable w/intense & sexually explicit - & racial/racist - situations. Lots of laughs, but alongside raunchy yet potent themes.
See it if you're looking for a fascinating, uncomfortable, and hilarious look at racial and sexual dynamics; you're willing to be challenged by a show
Don't see it if you're uncomfortable with explicit sexual scenes; you need a perfectly polished show; you have a small bladder (>2hr w/o intermission)
