This version of the classic Stephen Sondhein musical, starred Patti Lupone and Michael Cerveris, in a Broadway production that was originally staged in London in 2004. More…
Sweeney Todd, whose real name is Benjamin Barker, uses his new alias to resume work in his barber shop above Mrs. Lovett’s struggling pie shop after being wrongfully sentenced to life imprisonment by the corrupt Judge Turpin. After swearing vengeance against the judge that tore his family apart, Todd and Lovett plot a unique plan that helps them both and leads them down a dangerous, thrilling path with deadly consequences.
See it if You enjoy an entire play sung. Small intimate experience with some interaction with actors. Play is intense and actors devoted to it.
Don't see it if You want grand staging and elaborate scenery. The singing is the main star and the actors sang beautifully. An intimate theatrical event
See it if You like Sondheim’s music. Make sure that you order the Pie, it’s delicious and there’re no bad seats in the house.
Don't see it if Sondheim’s music is too much for you.
See it if You love gallows humor and stories of revenge. You want the best Sweeney/Lovett combination ever. You're hungry for a little priest.
Don't see it if You are squeamish. You are not a fan of vigilante justice. You are a judge.
See it if you want to see amazing talent performing a phenomenal musical in a minimalist way.
Don't see it if you want a traditional Sweeney Todd experience. John Doyle has his cast members score the show...it was an interesting choice....
See it if you love LuPone enough to watch her play the tuba, appreciate multi-talented actors, love a morbid Tim Burtonesque Sondheim musical.
Don't see it if you really need staging and choreography to get into a show. Probably easier to follow if you've seen the fully staged version first.
See it if Darker more abstract version of the show. Patti was out and the understudy was NOT good.
Don't see it if You don't like plots about murderous barbers.
See it if You enjoy masters at work and stripped down productions
Don't see it if you have difficulty with musically based shows with very little talking.
See it if You love this show and enjoy the music, but want to see a different and original take on a classic.
Don't see it if I saw the original production with Angela Lansbury. This stripped down show was quite good, but I missed the operatic thrust of the story.
See it if an amazing inventive re-staging of a classic Sondheim show. Wanting to see great acting in an immersive environment
Don't see it if not a fan of an immersive environment.
See it if you want to hear Stephen Sondheim's masterpiece. It is a horror story but also has wonderful moments of great humor.
Don't see it if you can't deal with unusual music... or people being murdered and baked into meat pies.
See it if you want to see a brilliant, dark, and originally staged Sondheim classic! You can never go wrong with LuPone and Cerveris.
Don't see it if you don't like Sondheim or dark disturbing subject matter.
See it if You want to see a brilliantly reimagined version of a musical theater staple; you can go back in time to when this was on!
Don't see it if You prefer a full-scale production over an avant-garde simplified one; you don't like meat in your pies.
See it if If you like Sondheim and in particular Sweeney Todd, this is an engrossing production that is more intimate than previous productions.
Don't see it if You hate Sondheim or don’t want to be “up close” to the action.
See it if you can't beat that cast, you love Sweeney (which is what it is)
Don't see it if you want something light-hearted, something not-too self-serious, the bloat of Sweeney Todd isn't you thing.
See it if you Stephen Sondheim musicals, if you enjoy radically rethought and revelatory productions of classics, if you love epic performances.
Don't see it if you hate musicals or Sondheim musicals, you are easily confused by non-literal staging or hate John Doyle's approach of actors playing music
Also A breathtaking production on all levels.
See it if You are interested in a fresh take in staging, you like interactive performances, you love Sondheim
Don't see it if You like traditional staging, you don't like to be in the action, you hate meat pies.
See it if Sweeney Todd at the Barrow Street Theatre was a unique experience. It was transformed into a pie shop serving meat pies. So much fun!
Don't see it if If you have a weak stomach for stories involving cannibalism.
See it if Sweeney Todd is one of those shows that almost every theatre person knows. Definitely worth the night out.
Don't see it if It's definitely grisly, and if you have issues with loud noises this is not for you.
See it if You want to see 2 masters (LuPone and Ceveris) or love this show. Also musicians may enjoy this production more than others.
Don't see it if Want a traditional production.
