Delightful, Enchanting, Entertaining, Epic, Great singing

See it if You love a big production, lavish costumes, fun songs, and great actors who can belt very well and very loudly.

Don't see it if If you don't like Cher, you like androcentric musicals, or you like a nice, calm evening at the theater.

The Observer

“While this fleshly, bespangled jukebox musical seems to worship its purple-voiced pop icon, it dances stubbornly on the surface of her phenomenon, rendering her a wry, camp cipher...The theatrical presentation could be more expressionistic, less mock-Vegas schmaltz. The book could be a truly feminist investigation of her life and times...Instead, we get sequins and non sequiturs...The show lacks heart, and heart is what Cher has in abundance.”

The Washington Post

"This jukebox musical — the latest in a burgeoning genre that will one day no doubt run out its streak with a tribute show to Milli Vanilli — is so devoid of insight that it takes some of its cliched pop lyrics for earnest commentary, on Cher’s rinse-and-repeat career of rise and fall and rise and fall and...Mackie’s sequin-drenched creations, tacky to the max, make the appropriate splashes in this oddly pasted-together evening."

"Granted, the jukebox musical that opened on Broadway Monday night has some clumsy and dopey dialogue...Still, it’s thrilling watching the 72-year-old diva’s rags-to-riches-and-back-again life woven by wall-to-wall hits. Stephanie J. Block gives the season its first must-see star turn as one of the show’s three Chers. Between director Moore’s flashy, fleshy, fluid staging and choreographer Gattelli’s high-energy and ridiculously sexy dances the production is light on its feet, too."

"This show too can boast of incredible simulation. Credit for that goes largely to its star, Stephanie J. Block, a charismatic stage presence in her own right who is here a careful mimic...No discussion of thin plotting, of costumes changes subbing for character development, or of retro har-har jokes will dissuade true believers looking for a bedazzled good time. Except perhaps this: Why not go see Real Cher who, at 72, looks and sounds at least as much like her younger self as Block does?"

"A better show than 'Summer.' And by better I mean it’s a glitzier and more entertaining ride. But once again the math is off: One singular superstar is infinitely greater than the sum of her theatrical knockoffs...This is a jukebox musical, where biography is processed through a kind of playwriting Auto-Tune...Ludicrously long. At times it felt as if I were doing a marathon of laps in a pool of glitter. But when 'Believe' blasts and the three Chers are encircled by hunks, it’s impossible not to karaoke along."

"The production proves to be more tolerable than similar star-worship vehicles, though nowhere near as satisfying as 'Jersey Boys' or even 'Beautiful'...The three lead actresses deserve a lot of credit for serviceably recreating Cher’s dark, smoky voice and various personas without dipping into caricature. Before the show turned into a clunky, schmaltzy mess in Act II, I was rather enjoying the show for what it is, which says a lot about Cher’s mass appeal."

"Obviously skilled in the craft of writing Broadway musicals about popular singers, Elice once again relies on narration and a chronological storyline, hitting on key events with a fine degree of humor and heart...Artistically, it's no match for 'Jersey Boys'...Director Jason Moore does a fine job staging this complex show...We may have reached the saturation point with jukebox musicals, but for Cher fans eager to 'turn back time,' the beat happily goes on."

"It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it does avoid some of the nastier potholes of the bio-musical form while driving home a sequin-studded spectacle...Elice is great for a one-liner, but his book never achieves a dramatic boil. How could it when its protagonist is essentially flawless, triumphing over every adversity with ferocious grace?...Block dominates the show with a convincing vocal performance and authentic diction."
