Director Stephen Brackett ("A Strange Loop") and book writer Joe Tracz bring Rick Riordan's bestselling young-adult fantasy novel to Broadway in this action-packed musical adaptation. More…
From the show:
As a son of Poseidon, Percy Jackson has newly discovered powers he can’t control, monsters on his trail, and is on a quest to find Zeus’ lightning bolt to prevent a war between the Greek gods. Based on the best-selling novel by Rick Riordan and featuring a thrilling original rock score, with an onstage company of seven playing more than 47 characters, "The Lightning Thief" is an action-packed theatrical adventure about accepting that normal is a myth and embracing the superpowers inside all of us.
See it if you're looking for a cute family friendly show. Based on young-adult novel, but writing skews much younger than that.
Don't see it if you're looking for a Broadway calibre production or must-see theatrical experience. It is cute and fun for what it is, but nothing standout.
See it if you need family fare that isn’t too scary, isn't sexual, and is simple in plot & design. Your kids will enjoy it; you’ll enjoy their joy.
Don't see it if you need highbrow, serious theatre; lack imagination; are over the “teen/tween-musical” scene (it’s the same book writer as Be More Chill).
See it if You are very young and like loud, raucous musicals and don’t are too much about the story.
Don't see it if If you like to understand the lyrics and relate to the characters in a musical with a beginning, middle and end. Band drowns out singers.
See it if You have read the books & saw the movie. Play about modern Greek mythology & half-bloods having quests to beat the Gods Great costumes👍🏼
Don't see it if You don't like Joe Iconis & Joe Tracz books. Didn't like Be More Chill
See it if you're looking for a fun, quirky musical that targets tweens but has moments any age group can appreciate. Not a "wow," but worth the time.
Don't see it if you're looking for a show that will really blow you away. The cast is solid, but it's deliberately cheesy at times, and never fully shines.
See it if you have a pre-teen who's into it, or just like musicals even if they're not terribly complex.
Don't see it if you're looking for something deep or subtle - this is neither.
See it if You have kids, especially fans of the book. Show is short and fast-paced. Fun and quirky.
Don't see it if Not a kid. Want more focused show. Not really Broadway caliber. More suited for off-Broadway. Music not memorable.
See it if You've young adults with you that are fans of the fantasy novel, or if you feel compelled to see every Broadway musical that made the cut.
Don't see it if 'not with a young adult, & are unfamiliar with the book. Unless you're a fan, you'll find the plot lacking substance. Better picks exist!
See it if You have kids 8- 14 who enjoyed books - pleasant but not memorable score - a more innocent Be More Chill but with children of gods on quest
Don't see it if Theatre aimed at young is difficult for you to sit through - Still it’s a pleasant show - Jorrel Javier as Grover was the standout performer
See it if you love Greek mythology, are a fan of the YA series or just enjoy a coming of age-finding yourself-teen story. The story has some depth.
Don't see it if you are expecting a large scale production. The set is bare bones and actors are tasked with being multiple characters. They manage well.
See it if you are a fan of the books, of scrappy/youthful/new musicals, or love seeing the audiences full of kids engrossed in the story.
Don't see it if you aren't a fan of YA literature or plots, or are looking for a polished musical.
See it if You are a fan of the book...are young or just interested in fluffy entertainment.
Don't see it if you are looking for a great musical with great music.
See it if You are into Greek mythology and like the story of Percy Jackson. Small production and new actors. Popular with kids and teens.
Don't see it if You like a big production and a more experienced cast. Smaller stage. Bit rushed. Overrated.
See it if you have younger members on your party. Great music. Cast performed at a heightened energy level throughout the entire show.
Don't see it if you hope to see spectacle or raditional Broadway magic. This was designed as a tour geared toward schools as a field trip opportunity.
See it if you are a fan of the books, going with a pre-teen/teen or like light and fluffy shows. Kudos to the cast, who really work their tails off.
Don't see it if you expect to see a highly stylized production. The show screams off-Broadway/touring company. It has heart but very weak production values
See it if If you like family friendly musicals, and don't care about staging. If you grew up with the book or have children who did.
Don't see it if If you're tired of young adult adapations. Also, they had barely any scenery or special effects or even real costumes.
See it if you like the book, Greek mythology, or clever shows with young protagonists.
Don't see it if you want elaborate props and showmanship, or don't care for shows about teenagers.
See it if You enjoy a family-friendly show, more geared for kids but entertaining for adults as well
Don't see it if You don't want to sit with lots of tweens and listen to simple type humor aimed mostly at kids level
