About the show

After playing the role at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in 2016, Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei returns to Broadway as Serafina in Roundabout's revival of Tennessee Williams's lesser-known drama.

From the show:

This is one Tennessee Williams woman you won’t soon forget.

Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei unleashes a tour de force as Serafina, a widow who rekindles her desire for love, lust and life in the arms of a fiery suitor. Sharply directed by Trip Cullman (Significant Other), Williams’s lesser-known gem sizzles with humor and heart one sultry summer off the coast of Louisiana.

Don’t miss Tomei’s quintessential performance—erupting from the depths of despair to the heights of passion in this Tony Award-winning Best Play.

Great acting, Entertaining, Disappointing, Funny, Dated

Fluffy, Dated

See it if You are interested in seeing a Tennessee Williams piece that is different than anything I have seen by him

Don't see it if You are expecting the edge of your seat drama that you usually get from Williams

Also I really like Tennessee Williams a lot. I don’t regret seeing this bec... Read more Read less

Hyperkinetic, Good lead performances, Unwieldy set, Disappointing, Dated

See it if a Williams fan & interested in seeing a production that emphasizes the comedic aspects..

Don't see it if the expense of the poignant ones in a clumsily staged (but with good projections & lighting) production with far too much going on

Also Both Tomei & Elliot are fine & have great chemistry. The quieter scene... Read more Read less

Ambitious, Dated, Disappointing

See it if You want to see Tennessee Williams’ plays. Acting good.

Don't see it if You dislike overacting and much screaming. Staging a bit confusing as to inside/outside house. Directing should have more serious scenes.

Slow, Romantic, Great staging, Disappointing, Dated

See it if you really like Tomei or Williams. This is a gorgeously-staged, unexceptional production. Sturdy but not fresh or interesting.

Don't see it if you want to avoid tired tropes and dubious accents. Lots of the language is unsurprisingly beautiful, but the plot is less so.

Boring, Disappointing, Slow, Banal

See it if You have nothing better to do with your time and don't mind sitting through a show with very little plot.

Don't see it if You want a show with an interesting plot.

Also I REALLY wanted to like this show. Tomei was great in the lead role, b... Read more Read less

Dated, Banal, Great acting

See it if You want to see the movie star.

Don't see it if You want to see a not-so-absurdly-outdated love story, or just a well written one.

Also What’s the point of reviving this kind of ancient “romantic” story? Th... Read more Read less

See it if Well... Marisa Tomei is beautiful and does a good job with a hard role. Imagine her character from My Cousin Vinny as really depressed

Don't see it if So many elements don't hang together - the Italian Greek chorus, the flamingos, the humor played as slapstick.

Quirky, Disappointing, Dated, Funny, Great acting

See it if You want to see some fine acting by Tomei and to see a more comical take on the play.

Don't see it if You are expecting the play to be updated (it’s not even with some music added and interesting staging). Slow burn plays aren’t your thing.

Lost, over the top, flamingos

See it if you want to see an over the top and all over the place production of a Williams play. Wonder what he would think...

Don't see it if you love this play. This production has no heart, not grounded at all, a lot of strange directorial choices.

Great acting, Disappointing

See it if Hmmm, I guess if you can understand loud, thick Italian speaking & gestures & enjoy fluff, go see it

Don't see it if You want to see a play that you can understand their talking, don’t enjoy a drawn out story

Disappointing, Absorbing, Great singing

See it if you enjoy classic plays, solidly delivered. You're ok with a mixed bag production that ultimately founders but has moments of real quality.

Don't see it if you're looking for something new. This is an essentially traditional production albeit one that plays pretty broadly with the humor.

Also I really wanted to like this. The set is initially eye catching and th... Read more Read less

Great staging, Last act: funny and entertaining, First act: excruciating, Uneven

See it if you like Marisa Tomei as she commanded the stage. Great production. Entertaining second act (If you can survive the first act)

Don't see it if you are impatient. If you are expecting something great from this celebrated author. This is his weakest play. Uninteresting characters.

Also I have to really commend the strong acting and the staging of this pla... Read more Read less

Overrated, Disappointing

See it if you are a Marisa Tomei fan

Don't see it if you hate shows with excruciating first acts; if you want to understand what the actors are saying

Dated, Overrated

See it if you like Marisa Tomei or Tennessee Williams

Don't see it if you don't like dreary plays

Ambitious, Quirky, Disappointing

See it if You are a Tennessee William fan or a Marisa Tomei fan.

Don't see it if You don't enjoy exaggerated ethnic characters or slice of life tales.

Also Did appreciate the creative sets and the women singing, sort of like a... Read more Read less

Quirky, Dated, Confusing, Cliched

See it if You like Marisa Tomei.... she does a good job despite a vague script and weak story line

Don't see it if you expect a typical strong and emotional Tennessee Williams script

Insipid, Excruciating, Dated, Disappointing, Cliched

See it if U want to see rarely staged Tennessee Williams with an Oscar winning actress

Don't see it if U will be disappointed by weak direction, distractingly bad set, or inconsistent accents and performances. Or just hate flamingos (wtf?)!

Overrated, Disappointing

See it if You like Tennessee Williams and Marisa Tomei. The staging and directing was a disappointment. Tomei and the "greek chorus were good.

Don't see it if You don't like Tennessee Williams or revivals or bad directing

Also I thought Marisa Tomei was great. But I did not like the directors int... Read more Read less

Funny, Disappointing, Banal, Confusing

See it if You want to see marissa tomei (the only reason see this) Like ridiculous story line and poor writing Bad accents and bad acting Awkwardness

Don't see it if A well written story A cohesive story from start to end A nuanced, culturally sensitive perspective

Inconsistent, Dated, Great acting, Entertaining

See it if You like Marisa Tomei and co-star Emun Elliot, who deliver strong, engaging performances. You want to see a classic play.

Don't see it if The material seems a little confused, disconnect in tone between the two acts. Some inconsistencies in the way the set is interacted with.

Disappointing, Dated, Cliched

See it if Marisa Tomei is riveting in what we both thought was a strangely misdirected show.

Don't see it if Why would a community of Sicilian immigrants speak in HEAVILY accented English to each other when they could more easily speak Italian?

See it if You love Marisa Tomei - she shines in this, but the rest of the play falls flat.

Don't see it if Accents bother you.

Great writing, Funny, Indulgent, Slow, Quirky

See it if you're a Tennessee Williams completest, or a Marisa Tomei fan.

Don't see it if You're expecting a coherent directorial vision, or if bizarre takes on classic works don't appeal to you.

Also The beautiful writing and top-notch cast is no match for Cullman's ham... Read more Read less

Intelligent, Thought-provoking, Intense, Great acting

See it if You love marisa tomei and good acting

Don't see it if You get bored easily

Great acting, Disappointing, Confusing

See it if Marisa Tomei was wonderful but the play itself was inconsistent and confusing, with a creepy, icky scene toward the end.

Don't see it if You don't want to deal with heavy accents, or don't want to be left with many questions when it is over.
