After playing the role at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in 2016, Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei returns to Broadway as Serafina in Roundabout's revival of Tennessee Williams's lesser-known drama.
From the show:
This is one Tennessee Williams woman you won’t soon forget.
Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei unleashes a tour de force as Serafina, a widow who rekindles her desire for love, lust and life in the arms of a fiery suitor. Sharply directed by Trip Cullman (Significant Other), Williams’s lesser-known gem sizzles with humor and heart one sultry summer off the coast of Louisiana.
Don’t miss Tomei’s quintessential performance—erupting from the depths of despair to the heights of passion in this Tony Award-winning Best Play.
See it if You are interested in seeing a Tennessee Williams piece that is different than anything I have seen by him
Don't see it if You are expecting the edge of your seat drama that you usually get from Williams
See it if a Williams fan & interested in seeing a production that emphasizes the comedic aspects..
Don't see it if ..at the expense of the poignant ones in a clumsily staged (but with good projections & lighting) production with far too much going on
See it if You want to see Tennessee Williams’ plays. Acting good.
Don't see it if You dislike overacting and much screaming. Staging a bit confusing as to inside/outside house. Directing should have more serious scenes.
See it if you really like Tomei or Williams. This is a gorgeously-staged, unexceptional production. Sturdy but not fresh or interesting.
Don't see it if you want to avoid tired tropes and dubious accents. Lots of the language is unsurprisingly beautiful, but the plot is less so.
See it if Well... Marisa Tomei is beautiful and does a good job with a hard role. Imagine her character from My Cousin Vinny as really depressed
Don't see it if So many elements don't hang together - the Italian Greek chorus, the flamingos, the humor played as slapstick.
See it if You want to see some fine acting by Tomei and to see a more comical take on the play.
Don't see it if You are expecting the play to be updated (it’s not even with some music added and interesting staging). Slow burn plays aren’t your thing.
See it if you want to see an over the top and all over the place production of a Williams play. Wonder what he would think...
Don't see it if you love this play. This production has no heart, not grounded at all, a lot of strange directorial choices.
See it if Hmmm, I guess if you can understand loud, thick Italian speaking & gestures & enjoy fluff, go see it
Don't see it if You want to see a play that you can understand their talking, don’t enjoy a drawn out story
See it if you enjoy classic plays, solidly delivered. You're ok with a mixed bag production that ultimately founders but has moments of real quality.
Don't see it if you're looking for something new. This is an essentially traditional production albeit one that plays pretty broadly with the humor.
See it if you like Marisa Tomei as she commanded the stage. Great production. Entertaining second act (If you can survive the first act)
Don't see it if you are impatient. If you are expecting something great from this celebrated author. This is his weakest play. Uninteresting characters.
See it if You like Marisa Tomei.... she does a good job despite a vague script and weak story line
Don't see it if you expect a typical strong and emotional Tennessee Williams script
See it if U want to see rarely staged Tennessee Williams with an Oscar winning actress
Don't see it if U will be disappointed by weak direction, distractingly bad set, or inconsistent accents and performances. Or just hate flamingos (wtf?)!
See it if You like Tennessee Williams and Marisa Tomei. The staging and directing was a disappointment. Tomei and the "greek chorus were good.
Don't see it if You don't like Tennessee Williams or revivals or bad directing
See it if You want to see marissa tomei (the only reason see this) Like ridiculous story line and poor writing Bad accents and bad acting Awkwardness
Don't see it if A well written story A cohesive story from start to end A nuanced, culturally sensitive perspective
See it if You like Marisa Tomei and co-star Emun Elliot, who deliver strong, engaging performances. You want to see a classic play.
Don't see it if The material seems a little confused, disconnect in tone between the two acts. Some inconsistencies in the way the set is interacted with.
See it if Marisa Tomei is riveting in what we both thought was a strangely misdirected show.
Don't see it if Why would a community of Sicilian immigrants speak in HEAVILY accented English to each other when they could more easily speak Italian?
See it if you're a Tennessee Williams completest, or a Marisa Tomei fan.
Don't see it if You're expecting a coherent directorial vision, or if bizarre takes on classic works don't appeal to you.
See it if Marisa Tomei was wonderful but the play itself was inconsistent and confusing, with a creepy, icky scene toward the end.
Don't see it if You don't want to deal with heavy accents, or don't want to be left with many questions when it is over.
