The legendary musical returns to Broadway in a new production from visionary, Tony Award-winning director Ivo van Hove. More…
From the show:
When the original production of West Side Story first premiered at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre on September 26, 1957, it utterly changed the face of the American musical theater. A career-defining milestone for every single member of its towering creative team — Laurents, Bernstein, Sondheim, and Robbins — West Side Story reimagined the most enduring love story ever written as a contemporary musical, complete with form-shattering stagecraft and a score for the ages. Now, more than 60 years later, the legacy of that original production, along with subsequent stagings around the globe and the iconic cinematic adaptation, has cemented West Side Story’s place as one the most significant cultural achievements of the 20th century.
See it if you would enjoy seeing a Broadway classic ripped up and sewn back together like some badly designed Frankenstein monster of a show.
Don't see it if you grew up loving the 1961 movie and you were DISAPPOINTED by the 2009 Broadway revival. Make sure to SKIP this production at all cost !!!
See it if you love anything the director does.
Don't see it if you love WEST SIDE STORY, as written by Bernstein, Sondheim, Laurents, and Robbins (whose choreography is embedded in the writing).
See it if You want to support a show that hired and still employs a sexual abuser
Don't see it if You’re a huge fan of the original, you don’t like new re-stagings
See it if if you are comfortable with the casting of a sexual harasser in a lead role and you go to live theater to watch giant video screens.
Don't see it if If you want to see a show that makes sense and it’s not an indulgent mess with a repulsive casting decision and overwhelming use a video
See it if you want to mostly watch a movie, that is poorly shot. or you like sexual predators, and their decision to cast one.
Don't see it if you're not into banal retellings with nothing new except fewer songs and more gore-- this cast did try though! Ramasar is a disgrace in this
See it if you want to support sexual predators. #BooBernado
Don't see it if you believe women and survivors and stand with Alexandra Waterbury. PLEASE do your research and don't see this show!!!!!
See it if you are a big fan of Ivo's work or must see every production of WSS possible
Don't see it if you care about the Anita's character at all or want a very standard version of WSS
See it if Nothing to like about this production. Sharks and Jets confusing, was this a movie or a Broadway show???
Don't see it if What was there to like about this show? Nothing. The first show I have ever hated.
See it if I can’t think of any reason why anyone would want to see this show except if you are a fan of being tortured for two hours.
Don't see it if If you’re expecting to See a real Broadway you will be disappointed because you are going to see a movie instead.
See it if you are interested in seeing a drastic, overblown reinvention of one of the greatest musicals ever written
Don't see it if you're not a fan of enormous video projections that dwarf the performers; you enjoy subtlety.
See it if …you get a free ticket, but make a reservation for cocktails after intermission.
Don't see it if …you like theatre and the spoken or sung word. “Emperor” van Hove isn’t wearing any clothes.
See it if if you want to be distracted by giant video of the actors instead of watching the actors themselves. No sets, bare stage, big screen.
Don't see it if You like traditional Broadway with built sets and actors, dancers and singers with actual talent and experience.
See it if Over 18/21 and have zero sensitivity to rape/tense suicide related actions/sexual video projection.
Don't see it if You are under 21/18. There is a vivid rape scene. There is SO MUCH pre recorded video that overwhelms the stage. Much of the action is video
See it if If you like multi-media with a huge movie screen If you like an updated story where you can't tell which actors belong to which gangs.
Don't see it if you like the original production. If you like the original choreography. If you want to hear all the original songs.
See it if If you would rather see a big screen than actual good acting and directing, this is the show for you
Don't see it if What a ridiculous staging. I absolutely adore Leonard Bernstein's score and Stephen Sondheim's lyrics, but this misses the mark by a mile.
See it if You have no problem with the use if video cameras and projection.
Don't see it if If you are expecting to see actors on the stage in front of you. Much of this production is filmed far upstage in small sets. Dreadful.
See it if A cheap multimedia way to fill one of Broadway's largest bare spaces. The music doesn't sound new or fresh. Adequate performances.
Don't see it if You want a retelling of the story. Only the races have been updated. The show is really a movie, with much action taking place out of sight.
See it if like the original and want to see a new take on the material
Don't see it if like the original and want the songs sung well and the story told well, even if a half-hearted attempt was made to update it.
See it if you have never seen the movie or a live production.
Don't see it if you have seen the movie. it is gravely disappointing: very sloppy dancing, poor vocals.Isaac Powell can't sing the score- strains or whisper
