About the show

Now in its sixteenth year on Broadway, this all-ages musical spectacle tells the untold true story of the Witches of Oz. More…

"Wicked" looks at what happened in the Land of Oz…but from a different angle. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another young woman, born with emerald-green skin—smart, fiery, misunderstood, and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships…until the world decides to call one “good,” and the other one “wicked.”

Great acting, Great singing

See it if Complex female protagonists, portrayed by wonderfully talented leads. Spectacular staging. Catchy tunes.

Must see, Enchanting, Great singing, Great staging, Riveting

See it if You enjoy sweeping, all-the-stops-pulled-out productions. Over-the-top costumes and design to create a beautiful production.

Don't see it if You prefer a telling closer to the book. (A version with more overt political themes would be fascinating!)

Also Any production that passes the Bechdel test is a magical thing. <3

Clever, Delightful, Enchanting, Great staging, Great writing

See it if You want to see the greatest musical of the 21st century; a show for the ages, and audiences of all ages.

Don't see it if You want to show people that you're too hip to see this pop-culture phenomenon, and that you're strictly a downtown theater connoisseur.

100

Don't see it if you can't escape into fantasy.

Enchanting, Refreshing, Original, Clever, Great singing

See it if You enjoy being swept away by clever songs, amazing costumes, and lots of fantasy. There are a few 'nods' to the original Wizard of Oz.

Don't see it if You're expecting to see The Wizard of Oz! This is the prequel, and the songs are nothing like the movie.

84
Entertaining, Great staging, Masterful, Delightful

See it if If you like splashy musicials. You are a teenage girl.

Don't see it if You don't appreciate fanciful musicials.

80
Enchanting, Delightful, Entertaining, Great singing, Great acting

See it if You loved The Wizard of Oz since childhood

Don't see it if If you don't like the Wizard of Oz revival

69
Overrated, Ambitious

See it if you like Wizard of Oz and want to know the backstory.

Don't see it if you are annoyed by filler. Half the score is amazing, but the other half is really bland. I would recommend this if they cut 30 mins.

"In retrospect, Wicked seems an early sign of the cultural clout which is to say buying power of a generation of girls (and now women) whose desire to see, read, and sing along with stories about female empowerment has become a snowballing trend."

"A musical prequel to The Wizard of Oz, that explained how the Wicked Witch of the West got that way, and explored her true relationship to Glinda the Good Witch. A combination of outstanding elements."

"Two of the producers of the musical Wicked bear the name Platt, which (in German) means flat, and one the name Stone, which (in English) means heavy. Why not also one called Long, although it is too much to ask for one called Boring, all of which apply to the show."

"'Wicked's' at its cleverest with the girl stuff; the streamlining of Maguire’s story – reducing a totalitarian allegory to an animal-rights flap – weakens the narrative logic. Catchy Stephen Schwartz songs compensate for a dreary opening number, but it’s the 'Wicked' witches who really make magic."
