"The script is clever, funny, a bit raunchy, and full of admiring nods toward some classic musicals. Although the story takes a little while to get going, the show eventually finds a pleasant comedic rhythm. The music is mostly upbeat and conversational, the writing is very self-aware...While the cast could, at times, blend better in their singing, and balance better with the keyboard, this shouldn't detract much from your overall enjoyment." "It is a testament both to the writing and direction that the transitions are seamless, switching back and forth so much that at times I wasn't sure whether to laugh, or cry, or both. The progression of events is clever and fast-paced so there is never a dull moment...Morales and Kreager are both incredibly endearing, and their substantial chemistry kept me totally rapt...'In a Little Room' is dark, funny, witty, and most importantly, sincere. I can't recommend it enough." Full Review

"'410[Gone]' is made up of a lot of very interesting pieces that are not quite greater than the sum of their parts. Striking yet disparate design aspects sometimes overpower the performances, because not enough time and care were given to ensure I knew the rules and was along for the ride...If you are particularly intrigued by the subject matter, there is a lot to admire about this show, but it may fall short if it isn't hitting close to home." "An adoring memento to the two giants—one literal, the other literary—it portrays...It's littered with references to works by both men, references that both celebrate and satirize...Director Leah S. Abrams really succeeds in bringing the playful banter to life...Dave Sikula and Brendan Averett have great chemistry...There's a lot of humor and love in it, and little else. It's both warm and weird, and it paints an attractive picture of what their relationship may have been like." Full Review

"Told with affection by a small ensemble playing multiple roles...While the premise for each sounds intriguing, the execution lacks a certain amount of substance. The characters and the circumstances are interesting, but that’s about the extent of the depth of these pieces...I didn’t find the events particularly compelling—when I could identify the event at all...Unless you’re a big fan of Neil LaBute and his style of storytelling, the festival might leave you feeling unsatisfied." "Hilarious and disgusting and heartbreaking all at the same time. I found myself rapidly alternating between laughing, gasping, and cringing at the ridiculous antics taking place...'The Coward' allows the incredible strength of the performers to shine through in every moment. Every actor onstage is so committed to this absurd, insane world...I loved this play. It endeared me to every character, kept me guessing right up until the final blackout, and left me wanting more." “The all-female cast, while not the most polished vocalists, are incredibly energetic and expressive. Indeed, I sometimes abandoned the subtitles entirely because, even if I missed a detail here and there, it became clear that the acting would communicate whatever I needed to know...For those looking for something fun and easy to digest, this is probably not the best production to see. But for those who like being challenged, there is a lot to appreciate and grapple with.” Full Review

“'Toast' baits us with an incredibly deep, crafted world that left me wanting to know more about what I had seen. I felt like I had been shown only a fraction of the real meat existing between these characters underneath the surface, and it was a bit disappointing to feel that only a few stories came to a satisfying conclusion. It is great to see a skilled cast...however, it also might be somewhat challenging for the casual theatregoer to appreciate the inner workings of the play." Full Review

"The chemistry between the two actresses really helped me to settle into the rhythm of their relationship, and it was a delight to see them have fun with the games being played. The aesthetic of the show is also very interesting...This production was a joy to attend. The company really plays with the text, and the pleasure of that freedom is visible in their performance... I recommend this production to any appreciators of Shakespeare and syllogisms, or anyone looking to have a good laugh." Full Review

“A fun and heartfelt musical road trip through a young woman's mind...What carries the show is the relationship between Sam and her best friend...The chemistry is quite effective...Occasionally a sort of ‘concert tone’ takes over, and all this musical flair begins to detract from the story...A fun show with great music and an honest message about being your own person...If you like new musical theatre at all, or even just good music in general, don't miss ‘The Mad Ones.'” Full Review

"There are some strange and amusing moments. It's very intelligent and the connections it draws between Donald Trump and Mephistopheles are spot-on. However, the whole thing feels not quite together...I had a hard time following the action...The language throughout is poetic and visceral, and the cast really commits to relishing their degradation, but I missed the main event...I couldn't help but feel there was more there that just hadn't been communicated to me." for a previous production "The whole evening feels kind of like an old variety-entertainment show...There is a lot of information that gets passed along through the performance, but the actors never let it feel like a lecture; it's really more like a party...'Whales' is also a punk-rock concert...The timing and rhythm of the music do a lot to preserve the momentum of the play and keep energy up...The storytelling is innovative, engaging, and educational." “It's a great story…Every scene has a relentless rhythm that is brought to life with rigor and focus by director Kamine…The whole cast gives incredible performances...They remain larger-than-life and somehow completely human at the same time…There is a lot of great design in this show, and many memorable images…The whole thing is a little campy and nostalgic, but the ideas are timeless...It's funny, it's sweet, and it's constantly surprising. I left the theater totally astonished." Full Review

"An evening of music, puns, and murder that doesn't quite hit the mark...It has all the makings of a noir thriller, and it probably would be one, if every character wasn’t casually dropping nursery-rhyme-themed puns every couple minutes in between bouts of witty banter and monologuing to the audience...'The City That Cried Wolf' fell a little flat for me. I had trouble investing in the protagonists and I never really felt a good balance between the humor and the plot." Full Review

"An absurd, heartfelt murder mystery that will draw you in and keep you guessing, even after you leave the theater…It plays off of a lot of noir tropes, and provides a few laughs along the way as characters subvert genre expectations…I walked out vaguely aware that there was something I was supposed to learn from this cautionary tale, but also baffled as to what it was…Definitely worth seeing if you're at all interested in a contemporary twist on one of the oldest kinds of stories." "This skillfully portrayed tale is a compelling twist on classic sci-fi tropes and timeless questions about the nature of existence...Overall, 'Universal Robots' is a lovely, often comedic, and equally tragic take on a set of very recognizable circumstances...While fans of sci-fi are sure to get a special kick out of this play, I think anyone who enjoys intimate theatre that asks difficult-to-answer questions will surely get their money’s worth." "If you’re in the mood for some bawdy laughs at the expense of others, 'Commedia dell’Artichoke' is the show for you. The writing is fun and flowing, showing the potential of intensely collaborative projects like this one...The seamless inclusion of improvisation throughout scripted scenes is a testament to the actors’ investment in the piece, and makes for a unique show every night." for a previous production “A lively, thrilling experience that feels as much like a children’s game as a carefully considered ritual…The rabid enthusiasm that Dzieci has applied to the frame of the piece and the different storytelling elements go a long way toward illustrating the world and immersing the audience, but it was difficult, at times, to discern what was happening…Ultimately, 'Makbet' is a fun experience, and a provocative sample of experimental storytelling, but not an effective depiction of the classic."
