The plot is transporting, odd, confusing, electric, and disappointing, the singing and dancing is nostalgic, and the costuming and dedication to the theme is unparalleled. The proshot is so well done and the original cast was so perfect that you may find that the current cast is much less of a fit for their roles. Once I figured out this I absolutely loved it, but until then I was trying to fit it in the boxes of the regular plays and musicals. But maybe that’s the point, the main character Jonah is unique like his show. The story leaves the audience in tears and holding their families in their hearts closer than when they arrived, it is so well paced and acted. Also I wanted to like BMC so bad after hearing great reviews from its off-broadway run, but man did this show let me down. With the exception of Michael in the Bathroom (which SLAPS, George Salazar is Broadway's underdog), every number is cringey. The plot at times feels like it was performed by high schoolers (no shade to the actors, they tried their best), and feels like a musical lover's worst fears of watching the worst plot on Broadway (so many shows to see, so little time!). Also I really wanted to like this, and I did for parts of it - the murder mystery plot was well done, great twists and turns. All of the actors are high quality, committed, and make great comedic choices. What killed the show for me was the stage - it's essentially the same joke x100 of the stage falling apart. The grand finale of the stage falling apart looks choreographically complex but does not match the lack of enthusiasm from the audience who has already overseen the joke throughout the play. You'd think the plot could have twisted so this was not forseen from the first stage malfunction during the preshow. While the actors have only improved as this show's tenure has gone on, the plot has remained in 1987, starting strong but ending more weakly than I recalled. The stage is minimal yet clever - the giant shoes and Milky White are such nice touches. The stage wonderfully flipped through scenes with illusionary lighting, the dance talent exuding from the stage was unparalleled (albeit nearly exhausting to watch, the ensemble must have 40k steps at the end of each performance), and the understudy covering the role of MJ couldn't have been more spot on with his impersonation. Also Mainstream comedy FINALLY seen in a broadway play, giving me newfound belief in plays on Bway. Cross between Hangover and SNL, Rachel and Lea's characters are reincarnations of prior characters they have played, set in the White House with female leadership. Many laugh out loud moments, loved the intensity in women leaders. The stage was incredible with its various rooms, love the slight of hand between them and the built allusion that they were large rooms. Also Happy to see a musical on the WP Theater stage, it was worth the 4 flights of stairs up to the theater (don't worry, there's an elevator). Jokes aside, in the hunt for a strong musical with a folk/indie influence, this one gets itself on the leaderboard. While the plot starts a bit pedantic (another gods plot? sisters? Hadestown, Once on this Island, and Frozen already did it honey), it gets heavy and dark real quick that makes you wishing for the happy-go-lucky songs from the first half hour. It's rare to see this type of heaviness in a musical, and although painful to watch, is oddly refreshing to see a musical go in such a bold direction.
