See it if if you like terrific performances and direction in a smartly written show with in a new setting and with excellent execution.

Don't see it if you are looking for something edgy & new with lots of action. With previously explored themes, if you want "new", this may not be for you.

Midtown W
Entertaining, Great acting, Ambitious, Intense, Absorbing

See it if You like quiet one person shows and enjoy watching a master actress, Alison Fraser, recount a macabre story with lots of twists and turns.

Don't see it if You are not a fan of one person shows or quiet shows with one actress sitting in a chair talking for 2 hours or not a fan of macabre stories

Entertaining, Enchanting, Great acting, Delightful, Fluffy

See it if you like very funny, silly, satiric shows with terrific performances and a standout by Michael Urie and others in a wonderful ensemble cast.

Don't see it if you do not like well written, exquisitely performed and directed comedic mayhem which sheds light on our society.

Prince of Broadway
Midtown W
Disappointing, Slow, Boring, Unemotional, Cheap

See it if you want mediocre recreations of musical numbers plucked from great shows which without context fall flat and lifeless

Don't see it if you like big broadway shows with great staging and emotional impact - this is not that show.

The Workshop
West Village
Absorbing, Entertaining, Funny, Intimate, Intelligent

See it if if you like Austin Pendleton and small intimate dramedies and interesting characters.

Don't see it if you are looking for production values or a plot driven story. This is about character development.

Exquisite, Absorbing, Delightful, Enchanting, Relevant

See it if you like new musicals with something to say & seamless, well executed production values - an antidote to Trump hate and discrimination.

Don't see it if you are a scrooge - lol - doesn't follow any conventional structure or rules so if that is an issue for you then don't go

The Dork Knight
Midtown W
Funny, Entertaining, Indulgent, Quirky, Great acting

See it if you have a thing for super heroes and especially the Batman movies and one man shows. The performance is quite good.

Don't see it if You/re not a fan of the Batman movies -an attempt to open up to be about life (his life) was unsuccessful & at 75 min it was 20 min too long

For a previous production
Entertaining, Confusing, Great acting, Intelligent, Slow

See it if if you must see every new musical & like moody musicals with little plot & some sweet songs and good acting but little /no emotional impact

Don't see it if if you don't care about an an essential book element (IMHO) - a central char w/ a goal and major hurdles to overcome to achieve that goal

Absorbing, Great singing, Funny, Delightful, Thought-provoking

See it if if you like a tuneful, autobiographical insightful show about an early mid-life crisis of Larsen before he hits it big with Rent

Don't see it if If you are expecting the quality of the original then you'll be disappointed - serviceable but not a great cast.

The Layover
Midtown W
Absorbing, Funny, Great acting, Ambitious, Disappointing

See it if if you enjoy great acting & a terrific production that has promise but ultimately loses its way & devolves into some unrealistic situations.

Don't see it if If you are impatient & can't appreciate the good with the bad. The domestic scenes are cliched & the child's dialogue way beyond her years.

Cliched, Funny, Disappointing, Great staging, Fluffy

See it if you love Sean Hayes and want to see a very short 70 min (they lie when they say its 90 mins) occasionally amusing comedy.

Don't see it if if you want more than a mildly amusing stand up (actually a sit down on a couch) routine - it's very, very thin and only occasionally funny

Delightful, Funny, Disappointing, Entertaining, Fluffy

See it if You enjoy old fashioned musicals with a terrific score and competent performances.

Don't see it if you are going to compare it to the last revival which was far superior or are expecting great performances. Everyone is fine - not great.

Absorbing, Entertaining, Thought-provoking, Intelligent, Great singing

See it if You want to see some terrific performances in an emotionally charged and satisfying completely reimagined revival. Celie's u/s was terrific

Don't see it if If you are super critical of librettos as the storytelling is a little clunky but the performances and emotional wallop are top notch!

Funny, Disappointing, Overrated, Entertaining, Raunchy

See it if you like traditional musical theater with a little raunch and some fun music. I was not a big fan and thought it was VERY overrated.

Don't see it if you are easily offended or are looking or expecting something groundbreaking - that it is not,

Absorbing, Clever, Ambitious, Original, Great staging

See it if you want to see an ingeniously staged show that is never ever boring.

Don't see it if you want a more substantial story and don't care much about production values.

Entertaining, Delightful, Funny, Great staging, Great acting

See it if you love the music of Carole King.

Don't see it if you want to see an innovative musical doc-musical. The libretto is mundane and lacks any ingenuity.

The School for Scandal
West Village
Clever, Delightful, Entertaining, Great acting, Funny

See it if you'd enjoy a great stylized restoration comedy of manners with superb acting.

Don't see it if you would not like a period comedy which is all about style over substance and do not appreciate masterful performances.

Banal, Cliched, Disappointing, Fluffy, Overrated

See it if you just absolutely must hear songs from the 50s and 60s and don't care about a plot, character development, or quality of the voices.

Don't see it if If you are discriminating about quality - this is a cheap attempt to capitalize on girl group hits of the 50s and 60s. Very disappointing .

In & Of Itself
Clever, Entertaining, Masterful, Absorbing, Slow

See it if If you are a fan of illusionists - mostly mind reader type stuff and close up magic and enjoy off-beat entertainment

Don't see it if You are expecting big Copperfield type of magic or are easily bored with slow paced story telling which I found too slow and self indulgent.

Upper W Side
Absorbing, Entertaining, Intelligent, Relevant, Profound

See it if you like thought-provoking, smart, relevant, contemporary drama with a terrific cast. This show can be intense with some lighter moments too

Don't see it if you like light fare and go to the theater just to escape.

Entertaining, Funny, Dated, Banal, Overrated

See it if you love Bette Midler & old fashioned pure fluff entertainment. It's a great production but it is still Dolly which has no depth whatsoever

Don't see it if you want a musical that gives you something to think about or if you are not a fan of Bette or star-mugging.

Ambitious, Funny, Disappointing, Indulgent, Quirky

See it if if you love Wallace Shawn's intellectual talkiness and some lovely performances from a stellar cast riffing on the importance of the arts

Don't see it if you are NOT into talky verbose plays where nothing happens and arguments are diffuse in an overlong intermissionless takfest

Banal, Cliched, Indulgent, Quirky, Slow

See it if you enjoy seeing shows that have glimmers of unrealized good ideas. This show has so many ideas and is so diffuse that it has zero impact.

Don't see it if you are impatient w/ a meandering plot & some really uneven acting (some are excellent & some are terrible). I often wondered, "why".

Cliched, Disappointing, Fluffy, Indulgent, Slow

See it if you like mindless entertainment with stereotype characters, banal lyrics and failed attempts at humor. Great set!

Don't see it if you like original ideas with good, sophisticated writing and nuanced performances. It was an evening of missed opportunities.

See it if if you love terrific and ambitious production values - staging, directing. costumes, etc with ambitious themes and clever writing.

A Taste of Honey
Midtown W
Entertaining, Funny, Intelligent, Epic, Thought-provoking

See it if You enjoy old fashioned linear storytelling with interesting and complex characters who are unhappy and trying to change their circumstances

Don't see it if Uneven acting is a real turn off - mostly good performances but some are not up to the job -

Banal, Cliched, Slow, Excruciating, Overrated

See it if you want to see an early work of Marsha Norma and see how much she has improved since then.

Don't see it if if you don not like contemporary musicals in the vain if Next to Normal.

Avenue Q (NYC)

See it if you want to be thoroughly enthralled and mesmerized.

Don't see it if there is no reason not to see it - It's a must see!

Banal, Cliched, Funny, Disappointing, Great acting

See it if you are nostalgic for the music of the 70s and enjoy seeing actors going all out with the little they are given to play.

Don't see it if you groan at tired, sophomoric humor and are looking for something more than a cheap parody that belongs in a cabaret space.
