Clever, Entertaining, Funny, Great writing, Refreshing

See it if You like fun entertainment. The show is fluff, but it is very well done fluff.

Don't see it if You like serious theater. This is a very light show.

Cliched, Good acting, Sweet, Quirky, Banal

See it if You like klezmer. This is a musical with a bit of story. I warmed to the characters and story. But it took time. Not much structure.

Don't see it if You like big production values, or the Eastern European immigrant story doesn't speak to you. The piece has a community theater feel.

Entertaining, Enchanting, Refreshing, Quirky, Romantic

See it if You like charming fairy tales. The story calls the mind The Little Mermaid. The original fairy tale. The singing is great.

Don't see it if You don't like romantic tales. Or if you like your love stories to all have happy endings.

Junk

Ambitious, Cliched, Disappointing, Relevant, Confusing

See it if You really like plays about finance.

Don't see it if You like plays with a lot of staging.

The Treasurer
Midtown W
Absorbing, Great acting, Intelligent, Thought-provoking, Entertaining

See it if You like family dramas and mother/son relationships. Characters are well drawn and the story is quite poignant.

Don't see it if You like dramas with a lot of story or plot. Not much happens, and although the bare bones set is intriguing, there is not a lot of staging.

KPOP
Midtown W
Clever, Great singing, Great staging, Ambitious, Quirky

See it if You loved Here Lies Love. This show covers Korean pop, taking the audience to places in a record label "factory." Many themes are explored

Don't see it if You want a story, and you want to sit down. There is much standing and watching, and for what it is, it is very long. It could be trimmed.

80
Spoon River
Midtown W
Absorbing, Clever, Entertaining, Funny, Great singing

See it if You like old timey music, and a thought provoking musical.

Don't see it if You like more traditional musicals.

53
Disappointing, Great singing, Quirky, Slow, Dated

See it if You have done memories of this show. This seemed more like a reading, with minimal dancing, and singers singing at music stands.

Don't see it if It told the story of a particular girl, and did not seem universal. The characters and book were thin. The music and singing were good.

85
Absorbing, Great staging, Intelligent, Refreshing, Thought-provoking

See it if You want a fresh take on Shakespeare. Setting Julius Caesar in a girl's school made for some beautiful moments. Cassius was excellent.

Don't see it if You want your Shakespeare in traditional dress and settings. There were no battle scenes.

83
Clever, Delightful, Entertaining, Funny, Great staging

See it if You want to laugh. Michael Urie performs with inspired silliness. The costumes and set are great. The physical comedy is wonderful.

Don't see it if There isn't a good reason not to see this show. You would need to be a real sourpuss not to get swept up in this comedy.

74
Vanity Fair
Midtown W
Quirky, Entertaining, Refreshing, Funny, Ambitious

See it if You loved Bedlam's Sense and Sensibility. This has much of the same charm, although the source material is not as good.

Don't see it if You don't like to see costume dramas performed with a winking knowingness. There is a lot to take you out of the story.

69
Thought-provoking, Quirky, Ambitious, Relevant, Slow

See it if you love shows about sexual hang ups. If so, you may find it engrossing. It is well acted, but the writing is clunky and distracting.

Don't see it if You value a clear sense of time or believability. The play doesn't really hold together, but it has some memorable moments.

¡Figaro! (90210)
Midtown W
Clever, Entertaining, Great singing, Great writing, Funny

See it if You love the Mozart opera. Opera, in an intimate setting, great singing and acting, timely and relevant. The chamber musicians were a treat.

Don't see it if You don't like opera. It dragged a bit in places, and could have been cut a bit more.

Clever, Delightful, Entertaining, Great singing, Refreshing

See it if As a New Yorker, it is hard not to respond to a Canadian take on 9/11. The story flies by, and the cast is wonderful.

Don't see it if You like involved, clever staging, or if you don't like Celtic music. This is a simply told story, without a lot of staging.

60
The Liar
East Village
Clever, Fluffy, Intelligent, Slow

See it if You love verse. This is not Ives's strongest work. The acting is fine all around

Don't see it if You are impatient with predictable stories. This show is all about the verse, and that is the reason to see it.

87
Clever, Hilarious, Quirky, Entertaining, Refreshing

See it if You want to laugh. Funniest thing on Broadway. Or Brdway.

Don't see it if Stand up is not your thing.

81

Ambitious, Entertaining, Relevant, Absorbing, Thought-provoking

See it if You want to be up on the latest thing, or you just love history.

Don't see it if You don't like rap music, or you really go to a show for the dancing. Although it won best choreography, the dancing was just meh.

See it if You want to see Cate Blanchett onstage, and you don't care what she is doing or saying.

Don't see it if You like Chekhov. This is a poorly written, confusing boring play.

65

Then She Fell
Brooklyn
Absorbing, Clever, Delightful, Great staging, Quirky

See it if You like exploring spaces, and seeing an old story from a new perspective. It's really fun to go on this journey with the characters.

Don't see it if You like more traditional theater, or if you have limited mobility.

53
Banal, Disappointing, Quirky, Slow

See it if You like the ides of wandering from room to room, even if not much happens.

Don't see it if You prefer your theater with actual characters, and actual story. This drags a bit, and not much happens.

91
Entertaining, Great acting, Great singing, Great staging

See it if I's all about the music. If you like Carol King, the music will sweep you away. Chilina Kennedy is great in the role.

Don't see it if You don't like Carol King music.

73
A Day by the Sea

Yerma
Upper E Side
Absorbing, Great acting, Indulgent, Overrated, Disappointing

See it if You like very British characters, and unusual staging. Interesting adaptation of Lorca. Good performances.

Don't see it if You don't like loud, jangly music. The show is a bit overhyped, and it did not affect me as much as I hoped.

54
Mother Lode
Chelsea
Cliched, Disappointing, Slow, Insipid, Great acting

See it if Dramas about demented, controlling parents mean a lot to you.

Don't see it if You want to see something new and different about dealing with dementia in the elderly.

67
The Children
Midtown W
Disappointing, Cliched, Intelligent, Slow, Overrated

See it if You like "topical" plays. This show about how the elders messed it up is for you if you are young, and want the old people out of the way.

Don't see it if You liked fast paced shows. This plays like a 30 year old's notion of what 60 year olds are really like. It feels false because of that.

68
Peter Pan
Midtown W
Quirky, Edgy, Raunchy, Thought-provoking, Experimental

See it if You are open to new ideas about Peter Pan. This is an interesting experiment in exploring a text, but it is not fully realized.

Don't see it if You are not familiar with the text/story of Peter Pan. Or if you are expecting a traditional presentation of the story. It may be confusing.

79

Don't see it if You don't like one person shows, or if you are squeamish!

69
In & Of Itself
Gramercy
Disappointing, Quirky, Slow, Intelligent, Thought-provoking

See it if You like magic shows mixed with storytelling. There is more storytelling than magic in this show, so true magic geeks may be disappointed.

Don't see it if You like traditional plot driven theater. Derek Delgaudio does tell the story of his life through magic - or is it just a made up persona?

81
Of Human Bondage
Midtown W
Absorbing, Great acting, Epic, Great staging, Intelligent

See it if You like absorbing drama. The staging and sound were very inventive. A wonderful adaptation of a book.

Don't see it if You like light, theater. This was a very emotional play, and rather heavy.

80
Kim's Convenience
Midtown W
Entertaining, Great acting, Cliched, Refreshing, Funny

See it if You like traditional family dramas and old fashioned plays. The acting is very good, if the writing is a bit "made for TV."

Don't see it if You like edgy drama. This play is very traditional, albeit, well made.

67
Slow, Disappointing, Good acting, Poor staging, Funny

See it if you love this play, and see it every chance you get. It is a great opportunity to see Cara Ricketts, who is making her NY debut at TFNA.

Don't see it if you don't like the play. This is a production which stresses the comedy of Measure. The set and staging put the actors at a disadvantage.

79
Ambitious, Great acting, Great writing, Intelligent, Quirky

See it if You love/like this play, or are curious about it. This is a solid, well acted production. Dianne Wiest is very worth seeing.

Don't see it if You like traditional plays with story and movement. This is a famous play, well performed, but it is not to everyone's taste.

8
The Infinite Wrench
East Village
Disappointing, Excruciating, Indulgent, Raunchy, Overrated

See it if You don't like theater. There is a clock ticking down the minutes of this one hour show. That was the best part.

Don't see it if You value theater at all. If I hadn't been seated in the front row, I would have left.

71
Banal, Ambitious, Dated, Disappointing, Slow

See it if period drama and name actors are your thing. Danny Devito is funny. The second act is more absorbing than the first.

Don't see it if You don't like period drama. The opening was slow. The first act was too long, and the second act started strong, and then got melodramatic

79
Delightful, Great singing, Quirky, Refreshing, Funny

See it if You love Chekhov. This was a lot of fun, with the highlight being a selection of songs from Songbird, sung by original cast members.

Don't see it if You don't like a variety show or cabaret format.

83
Clever, Delightful, Great staging, Quirky, Funny

See it if you like quirky, immersive, original works. This show is delightful, in a very original setting.

Don't see it if The trials and tribulations of uptight academics don't interest you. Our heroine is a very winning, but very cliched academic single woman.

71
Confusing, Edgy, Intelligent, Quirky, Thought-provoking

See it if Great for theater geeks who want to see Mary Mullen play Mag as a follow up to her Maureen from 1998.

Don't see it if You can't follow thick Irish accents. While I did not see the original, I can imagine how that production would have been more powerful.

70

49
Dated, Disappointing, Banal, Excruciating, Insipid

See it if You love old timey, high school level musicals, or if the songs mean a lot to you.

Don't see it if You are expecting to discover a forgotten gem.

73
Candide
Upper W Side
Dated, Entertaining, Great singing, Slow, Refreshing

See it if This was a rare chance to see Bernstein's masterful score performed in a full production.

Don't see it if I now understand why the show is not staged. I doesn't really work on stage.

82
Spamilton
Midtown W
Clever, Entertaining, Funny, Hilarious, Great writing

See it if You are a musical Theater nerd. As a Forbidden Broadway show, it spoofs all musical theater, not just Hamilton.

Don't see it if You don't like musical theater, or you don't know anything about Hamilton.

80
