About:  Longtime Broadway fan in need of a lottery win so I actually AFFORD to go to see a show. It's amazing just a few decades ago U could see a "talkie" in the movie theater for a buck and U could get a SRO seat on Bdwy for 99 cents. Anyway, I appreciate this site for all the reviews from REAL people as ... Read more Read less

Full disclosure: i went to college (smsu) with deidre goodwin (sheila) & i have a mad crush on jessica lee goldyn (val), so i may be biased, Viewed show june 20, 1977 (standing room, back of orch), Entertaining, Dated, Great acting, singing, dancing

See it if 1st time look @ ACL on Bdwy tho I had seen prod's in college & locally. Only on Bdwy did I notice that the dancers were 2 good 4 the choreo.

Don't see it if See this show wherever U can unless U dislike "backstage" musicals. Also see the docu EVERY LITTLE STEP to see how the Revival was cast.

Staten Island
Broadway's 2003 revival @ the shubert theater, Dir. by sam mendes w/ choreography by jerry mitchell, Bernadette peters as 'rose', Entertaining

See it if It was Opening night on Broadway and I actually ran into composer Stephen Sondheim (& got him to sign my Playbill). Everyone was smiling!!

Don't see it if If U don't like backstage Showbiz stories about bossy Stage moms and kids that grow up to be strippers (Gypsy Rose Lee), then you're CRAZY!!

City Stories
Midtown E
Charming singer-pianist bookended each pas de deux, 4 romantic playlets w/ casts of 2-3 actors, Playlets dominated by monologue-storytelling, Part of the annual brits-off-broadway play festival

See it if If U like shows in a place so intimate U may need a shoehorn 2 wedge yourself into your seat, w/ actors so close they make deep eye-contact.

Don't see it if If U dislike monologue-storytelling dominating dialogue, British accents, romance without physical intimacy, & a singer that steals the show

Delightful, Entertaining, Overrated

See it if A great score holds this together as well as a game cast (2 many to name over the years). A decade at the Lunt is nothing to sneeze at??

Don't see it if If U saw the animated movie (as I did) then your expectations may be too high for the sometimes clunky way the non-human characters are done

Shear Madness
Midtown W
2-shows-in-one: bad one-act followed by good audience interaction, Funny, Overrated

See it if My Mom saw this show in DC over 20 yrs. ago so I thought I should check it out since it's moved to Off-Bdwy. Final hour made up for the 1st

Don't see it if Skip if U don't appreciate "malapropisms" galore & lots of pop-culture references. "1" actor kept "cracking" the cast up to keep it fresh?

Entertaining, Great acting, Romantic, Great staging, Must see

See it if I 1st saw this show TV-star Wayne as the feisty cross-dressing "Lola." but recently saw the return of Billy Porter in his Tony-winning role!

Don't see it if Prudes may not like their men in women's clothes, but the amazing costumes in this show could change your mind. Pity for the colorblind-WOW!

Also Yes, as entertaining a performer as "Let's Make A Deal" emcee Wayne Br... Read more Read less

Great acting, Intelligent, Thought-provoking

See it if If U want to see George Takei's Bdwy DEBUT then this is your last week to catch his scene-stealing perf. Underused Lea Salonga sings best.

Don't see it if If U r a Repub then the nearly all-Asian cast singing bout the USA's disservice to the 1st generation of Japanese immigrants won't convince

Old Hats
Midtown W
Clever, Entertaining, Funny, Hilarious, Great acting

See it if Two masters of their craft at the height of their powers. Bill Irwin & David Shiner ALONE are worth the price of entry, but U get a band too

Don't see it if If U don't like perfs interacting directly with the audience (def don't get a front row seat if U fear such interaction). Mime-phobics too!

Entertaining, Dated, Funny

See it if Hines & Hines may mean lil to many, but since the death of his brother a dozen yrs ago singer-tapper Maurice Hines has kept the dance alive

Don't see it if If names like Sinatra, Garland, Tallulah! mean lil to U then U may b 2 young to enjoy this trip down memory lane. Segregated Vegas stories?

Great acting, Great staging, Must see, Romantic, Riveting

See it if First time for me (sorry Lea Michele), & U can add me to the bandwagon crying for MORE DEAF WEST. Absolutely fell in luv-luv-luv with Act I.

Don't see it if If U find double-casting 2 much, or ASL+speech redundant, then skip it. There's a lil boob (literally) & male butts to scare prudish types.

Midtown W
Entertaining, Delightful, Funny, Great acting, Fluffy

See it if I can't imagine seeing this w/o Annaleigh Ashford in the title role, she certainly takes this pet-lovers show to "Tony" heights! See it NOW!

Don't see it if If U hate dogs, pseudo-love triangles, marital squabbles, etc. then this may not be for you. Try to see it this wknd (closes Jan. 3rd 2016)!

Blue Man Group
East Village
Clever, Entertaining, Original

See it if I think this was one of the first Off-Broadway shows I saw when I first came to NYC over 10+ years ago & it's still running! Amusing group!

Don't see it if Don't see if U don't like the color blue or people w/ faces painted blue. Don't go if U expect a story/dialogue. Only for seekers of Unique!

Banal, Disappointing, Slow

See it if Saw this during previews at the Abrams Arts Center. Very tame take on the Porn industry tho insiders could appreciate some of the research.

Don't see it if If U r expecting a lot of nudity, U came to the wrong porn show. If U like a bawdy song or two then U might get your money's worth.

Delightful, Kelsey grammar was awol, Entertaining, Romantic

See it if If possible, check to see who's IN or OUT for your perf, lots of understudies from night to night (though they are very good). See twice too

Don't see it if If you don't like kids onstage, there's four brothers in this one. Also if U don't like Peter Pan or backstage looks at "old school" theater

1999 broadway prod: "4" tony awards, Brian dennehy ('willie') & elizabeth franz ('linda'), Absorbing, Great acting, Masterful

See it if The first show I saw upon arriving in NYC was DOAS, & I've yet to see a better show since in the 15 yrs. I've lived here. MUST-SEE!!

Don't see it if If U don't like emotional family stories or crying real tears then steer clear of this show. Don't go if the cast seems too inexperienced.

The History Boys
Midtown W
(2006) broadway: west end transfer from london, Entertaining, Richard griffiths as 'hector' (the history inst.), Show won "6" tony awards, James corden was 1 of the boys (pre-late nite-tv)

See it if I saw this a few times which I think is helpful when watching British shows, mainly cause they speak slang that's hard to pick up. Good job!

Don't see it if Don't see if U don't like watching a group of boys debating their history teacher on various subjects. Make sure it's a good cast or skip it

Airline Highway
Midtown W
Broadway transfer from steppenwolf (chicago), Disappointing, Edgy, Quirky, Overrated

See it if I heard that Tony-winner Julie White was "starring" in AIRLINE HIGHWAY but her character was just a part of this oddball ensemble play. MEH

Don't see it if Skip this one if U don't care for shows about White trash and transvestite prostitutes that use a rundown hotel as a giant whorehouse. TRASH

Into The Woods
Midtown W
Shakespeare in the park: delacorte theater, Donna murphy as the witch, 2012 outdoor revival, Denis o’hare (the baker) & amy adams (baker's wife), Entertaining

See it if Stephen Sondheim's INTO THE WOODS is a perfect fit for Outdoor performing so if it pops up near U go SEE IT! I need to c it Indoors someday?

Don't see it if The rules of FREE Outdoor theater have to do w/ long lines to get the tickets & changeable weather. If U'd rather not be bothered SKIP IT!!

Mamma Mia!
Midtown W
Broadway - ny original cast, Delightful, Entertaining, Louise pitre was "donna sheridan", Winter garden theater (2001-2013)

See it if If U have a Mom, then U have to take her to MAMMA MIA provided she can go w/ the idea of a wild wknd w/ 3 guys & the search for the right 1!

Don't see it if If U don't like the Music of ABBA this could be a tough nite, skip it, or if the history of the Donna character seems too morally "loose."

Cabaret (Broadway)
Midtown W
Bdwy revival at kit kat klub, studio 54 (1998-2004), Entertaining, Great acting, Great staging, Resonant

See it if Returned to NYC in 1999 so I missed Alan Cumming (the Emcee) & Natasha Richardson (Sally) as the leads. But I saw several others & it worked

Don't see it if If U don't like WW2 shows where the Nazi's sing too then skip it. Don't like dancing girls (w/ cigars) or risque songs then you're a Nun/kid

2006 bdwy revival at the broadhurst theater, Ambitious, Great acting, Great staging, Turntable staging

See it if I saw a touring co. do Les Miz at the Curran in San Fran & my seats sucked. Luckily, many years later, it came back w/ Bdwy's best singers!!

Don't see it if If U don't like onstage violence (GUNSHOTS) then skip it. Don't care for epic stories that cover many years & history-in-the-making -WHO R U

Enchanting, Broadway's longest running show, Great acting

See it if Plan on visiting Bdwy regularly? Then U must c this 1 sooner or later, but I say see it sooner so U can use it as yardstick 4 each U c after

Don't see it if Don't like opera-ish or backstage dramas, then U can skip it. Don't like deformed men stealing away the lead girl cause its 2 romantic skip?

The Tempest (Public)
Upper W Side
Entertaining, Outdoor theater, Disappointing

See it if As Prospero, Sam Waterston (TV's Law&Order) seems like a good choice. Sadly, he thought he was Polonius (from Hamlet) & lacked the magic.

Don't see it if If U don't like rapid weather changes or risking the threat of a rainout then beware outdoor theater. Skip if standing in line 4 tix grates?

For a previous production
Noises Off
Midtown W
Entertaining, 2001 revival at the brooks-atkinson, Overrated

See it if Although Patti Lupone was the star of this revival, I caught it late in the run and Jane Curtin (from SNL) was in. The show had its moments.

Don't see it if If U r not into "The THEATER" then the onstage-offstage goings on may not be interesting to you. Also skip if U don't enjoy physical comedy.

Upper W Side
Ambitious, Entertaining, Funny, Romantic, Shakespeare

See it if Lucky enuf to see CYMBELINE twice from 2 different angles. Totally nutty play ends with dozens of "revelations" that join the large cast??

Don't see it if If U don't like Shakespeare this is not a good place to start. Also, outdoor theater can be trying if the weather suddenly changes. Read it?

(2004 revival) shakespeare in central park, Tv actors jimmy smits (benedick), kristen johnson (beatrice), & sam waterston (leonato), Also of note: off-bdwy fave brian murray as dogberry, Delightful

See it if Shakespeare in the Park always makes for a perfect fit for the Bard, especially his comedies and this production was no exception. GO !!

Don't see it if If you don't like sitting outside, have a fear of bugs, or don't like watching actors fending off raccoons, etc. Find free tickets offensive

Julius Caesar
Midtown W
Shakespeare's famous 'roman play' is way too long, 2000-outdoor prod/shakespeare in the park, Starry cast: jeffrey wright (marc antony) & david mccallum (title role), Weather (t-storm/downpour) preceded perf, Overrated

See it if What I recall most about the show was the Set which used a black rubberized flooring which proved especially dangerous after the RAIN.

Don't see it if If U don't like watching actors fight to keep their footing on a slick stage, even Marc Antony made a pirouette at one point to stay upright

Tuck Everlasting
Midtown W
Veteran cast: park, carmello, applegate, goldyn, & more, Enchanting, Funny, Profound

See it if I read some mixed reviews but took the $19.75 ticket offer & got much more than my money's worth. Knew about the dancing going in & LOVED IT

Don't see it if If U like your musicals edgy, f-word laden, urban, then U won't find this squeaky clean fable up to your speed. Don't drink the water??

Husband & wife team triumph, Entertaining, Great acting, Latin pop numbers a la mamma mia

See it if If U know Gloria Estefan's music & her story then U MUST-SEE it on stage. 2nd act is stronger dramatically than the 1st, gr8 BIG prod. nos.

Don't see it if Cuban-American history and crossover latin-pop music isn't of at least minor interest. Won't win over new fans as much as rekindle old ones!

Clever, Funny, Great acting, Edgy, Great writing

See it if Well, I HAD to see this before they tore down the theater so I kind of tricked dear old Mom into taking me. I loved it, but she didn't. Oops

Don't see it if U should probably skip this if U find jokes about urinating, urinals, etc. to be unpleasant or gross. Also if U are very literal-minded.

Great writing, Absorbing, Clever, Entertaining, Great acting

See it if If this isn't Edward Albee's Best Play ever, it's certainly the most accessible. It also tends to bring the BEST out of the actors. GO-C-IT

Don't see it if If U don't like inter-generational plays where the older couple preys on the younger (both psychologically & literally). HI-drama fans ONLY!

Entertaining, Raunchy, Quirky

See it if Next month BOM will hit it's 5th anniv. but it's not in bad shape, mainly thanks to Nikki Renée Daniels (Nabulungi) leading a game chorus.

Don't see it if Skip it if U r a Mormon or devout Christian. Bad language abounds, even tho much is based on actual practices in the Darkest parts of Africa

East Village
Clever, Entertaining, Original

See it if Percussion!! Percussion!! Percussion!!

Don't see it if If U r looking for Stars or a Story or if U get headaches easily. Mainly for younger folk, but some of us geezers like it.

During previews
I And You
Midtown E
Romantic, Slow, Fluffy

See it if It's a 2-hander, meaning 2 actors share the stage for 90 min (no intermission). Good news is that the last 1/2 hr. makes up 4 the dry 1st hr

Don't see it if U don't like young "ordinary" actors (not a star-is-born cast)? Skip it.Same if U don't like teen & H.S. issues. Surprise ending, stay 2 end

During previews
Disappointing, Funny, Slow

See it if Unless U r a fan of the playwright or Linda Lavin, this play on adultery is stiff (in all the wrong ways). 1st act is static, 2nd act works

Don't see it if If U don't like unmiked plays that are staged statically in a presentational style. Not much to recommend except a few laffs in the 2nd act.

Great acting, Great staging, Great writing, Must see, Thought-provoking

See it if Full disclosure: I went to see this play to see the stand-by perf that I went to college with. I had a standing room ticket, never noticed!

Don't see it if If U r seriously homophobic then some scenes in this play may not work for you. Overall, it's a great play about a family living real LIFE!!

Enchanting, Great acting, Romantic

See it if I really enjoyed the 1st act, Kelli O'hara ALONE is worth the price of a seat. Her voice & look are both perfect for the role. 2nd act weak?

Don't see it if The show is very chauvinistic (of course) with a dictatorial King in charge of his country & household (a small army). A bit old-fashioned.

Daddy Long Legs
Midtown W
Live stream - watched on laptop, Delightful, Clever, Funny, Romantic

See it if I would be interested in seeing this again if it transfers to Bdwy with STARS. 2-person cast is very good but this show cries out for STARS!

Don't see it if If U like your musicals with lots of scenery & costume changes. If U don't like schoolgirl romances with lots of letter-reading.

Clever, Great acting, 1993 stratford (on) shakespeare fest, Colm feore as 'oberon', Directed by joe dowling

See it if Altho I had seen/been in AMND before, this trip to Canada proved most worthwhile when I beheld the tech wizardry & rock music -just MAGIC!!

Don't see it if Skip if U don't like traipsing off to Canada or paying for a bed&breakfast (actually quite reasonable). Shakespeare a given, rock music??

The Normal Heart
Midtown W
Absorbing, Great acting, Edgy, Msu college production: coger theater, Dir. by dr. mike mcelhaney

See it if NOT the Broadway version, but a powerful play even in the hands of students. I knew the whole cast & spent most of it crying my eyes out.

Don't see it if Well if U are homophobic then a show about gay men fighting the govt. over HIV meds could be uncomfortable. Live with the discomfort, SEE IT

2015 broadway revival, Entertaining, Turn-of-the-century france (19th-20th), Disappointing, Vanessa hudgens ('gigi') & victoria clark ('mamita')

See it if The producers expected a BIG turnout from Vanessa Hudgens fans & removed the amoral parts of the story. What they needed was a smaller venue

Don't see it if If U wanted to see a nasty little tale about older men chasing much younger women then U've come to the wrong show. Here she's 18 (not 16)??

Midtown W
Broadway: won 5 tony awards, Montego glover ('felicia') & chad kimball ('huey'), Entertaining, Relevant, Underground clubs of the segregated 1950s

See it if I am so happy I saw this with the Orig. cast (2009) even though the show ran w/ replacements till 2012. Some casts have a magic & this DID!!

Don't see it if If U want your historical musical to contain "actual" songs from the era then U may have 2 skip it (go c MOTOWN), or racism is an issue 4u??

Clever, Broadway: shubert theater (2005-09), My king arthur was simon russell beale, Entertaining, Funny

See it if If U like Monty Python this is certainly a MUST-SEE and the goings on are so zany (as expected) that I don't think the casting matters? ?

Don't see it if On the contrary, if U hate the humor of Monty Python or send-ups of other musicals & the theater itself, then U should skip it.

The Fantasticks
Midtown W
Community theater (savannah,ga), Clever, Entertaining, Funny, Hilarious

See it if I have not seen the New York productions which have run for decades (which should be proof enuf to go). I did c an intimate version & LOL'd!

Don't see it if It's a very small cast, so if U like BIG musicals w/ BIG orchestras then this may not b your cupOtea. Not a parent, U may not get some jokes

John cameron mitchell was my hedwig (on crutches), Rebecca naomi jones was my yitzhak, Entertaining, Great acting, Quirky

See it if I felt bad that JCS was hurt (did a lot of sitting) but his improvisations were hysterical. I never saw Tony winner Dena Hall -didn't matter

Don't see it if Loud rock'n'roll not your cup of tea, skip it. A man portraying a transvestite w/ an "angry inch" too risque? Skip it. Hate wild-ass fun? ;)

Based on 1994 animated disney movie, Elton john won oscar for best song in the film!, Delightful, Entertaining, Started at new amsterdam but switched to minskoff theater in 2006

See it if OK, it's a Family show from the get-go, but there's as much for the Adults to enjoy as the kids. Julie Taymor's inventive direction works!!

Don't see it if Don't see it if U don't like puppets, or masks protruding from actors heads, or sitting in a audience with a lot of kids around.

Don't see it if If U don't know the difference between a muppet & the person that's actually doing all the singing, then U may get confused watching this.

Clever, Delightful, Brooklyn

See it if Don't fear BK, there's good theater to b had there! In this case, the Fiasco group were there and if Chemistry is all then they r Everything

Don't see it if Hey it's Shakespeare, if U don't like iambic penta., skip it. Same if don't like using your imagination to fill in the open walled scenery?

For a previous production
Jersey Boys (NYC)
Midtown W
Frankie valli & the four seasons, Entertaining, Funny, Great acting

See it if For some strange reason, I've only seen JERSEY BOYS once, but I definitely want to see it again. I enjoy the Four Seasons both music & story

Don't see it if Well, if people speaking in a New Jersey accent bother U, then skip it. That goes double if U don't like the music of the 4 seasons. Capiche

For a previous production
Entertaining, Funny, Great acting, Profound, Thought-provoking

See it if FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (2004) had non-Jewish Alfred Molina as Tevye but I thought he was fine. Then Harvey Fierstein took over & he added humor

Don't see it if Well, Anti-semitic folk might want to skip it, but anyone that's dealt with TRADITIONS both old & new can appreciate this historical story?
