"'A Christmas Carol in Harlem' is a cozy, spirit-filled way to spend an evening, especially as a resident of Harlem...It is refreshing to be in a theatrical space that really understands and serves their target audience. Although the piece certainly is feel-good and jolly in all the right ways, I didn't truly appreciate its magic until afterwards...On the cusp of the centennial of the Harlem Renaissance, it is exciting to encounter a group looking to celebrate that same explosion of art and c... "One of the most striking things about 'Be More Chill' is for all the hype, it feels immediately familiar. No matter how you remember high school, it still stands as a relatable playing field...Watching it I felt pure, uncomplicated joy, an emotion that theatre so often complicates. But at the same time a nagging voice was telling me that this musical isn’t exactly ground-breaking...But that's ok, because 'Be More Chill' is pure comfort food...Unassuming and fun; here, that’s enough." "From a writing standpoint, 'Yacht' poses a question on finances similar to the one 'Spring Awakening' poses concerning sex: if we as a society treat the discussion of major life topics as taboo, aren't we destined to crash and burn?...Although it is worth pointing out that middle-class, white America is not the subject that needs the greatest voicing right now, 'Yacht' does present a wonderful appreciation for a parent's grit, and the sacrifices made in the name of capitalism." “Consists mostly of two or three person scenes in which our characters, intoxicated and aggressive, fight so intensely that they are sure to exhaust themselves. Guirgis' script does find delicate, complex moments, though the characters will often undercut them with a punchline, and the comedic rhythm is back to its speedy pace...Feels more like a live sitcom than a play...The dialogue rattles quickly, builds to a raunchy punchline, and then waits for the audience's reaction." "Starts out clichéd, but the piece swells in rich moments of music and feeling expertly executed by the cast of storytellers...Once the exposition has cleared, 'The Homecoming Queen' finally comes to life with delicious surprises and understated character work. Yet it is the talent of the collective ensemble that is superior here...By the end of its 105 minutes, 'The Homecoming Queen' becomes a play for every actor on the stage and for every patron in the house." “A surprisingly fun, interactive environment for exploring one of our nation's darker chapters...The marriage of puppetry and treason is a wise choice on creator/director Vít Hořejš' part...The marionettes give the play a highly presentational feel, but this should not be mistaken for a family-friendly evening...'The Life and Times of Lee Harvey Oswald' caters to true-crime fans, yet there's a whimsy about it that one might find in an improv show. All around, an evening worthy of a chuckle." Full Review

"In true Baker style, nothing grand happens throughout the entirety of 'The Antipodes,' and by doing so, the piece is all the more delicious...In telling a story about people telling a story, Baker exposes time in new ways...Those less familiar with Baker's work, or less on board with her style, might easily walk out wondering what they have just seen. Annie Baker has created her most self-aware work yet, with every thought being simultaneously literal and allegorical." Full Review

"A ticket is a guaranteed new, fun experience. Some parts admittedly founder while others shock the theatre with a poignancy that any Broadway play could only aspire to achieve. What makes these moments even more special is that the performers are so tangible and personable...The four minds behind 'The Great American Drama' are sure to entertain, and sure to set a classy example of what it means to be a truly humble, selfless actor." "What Horovitz did not tell us was that we were about to experience moments of perfect theatre; that we were collectively about to lose ourselves in his writing...Despite the heavy subject matter, 'Man in Snow' has some of the finest acting I’ve seen in a long time...Lyman exerts a tangible power over all that he does, always seeking something genuine, and never settling. Matched in this success is Sandra Shipley...To watch them work and create within Horovitz’ script is a pleasure." Full Review

"What could easily slip into the experimental theater void as just another play of monologues underscored with modern dance becomes a much deeper study of what it means to be human...The flow of the piece makes it such that everyone will leave with different thoughts about what the past hour of their life just meant, and even about the purpose behind each moment...This special feeling—of having your own individual experience in the theatre—is what makes the piece special." "Standup comedian Kaytlin Bailey kicks down sexist notions against women in her autobiographical one-woman show. She ventures into her life story before the audience with an unparalleled air of brassiness, explaining her lust for sex work as a teenager...It would be wrong to say that this hour of fantastic storytelling is solely about Kaytlin. This show casts light on the long-standing history between damaged men and the women they pay to sleep with them." Full Review

"'#Blessed' blends the unexpected with the traditional, and proves that what is easy to perceive as strange or imperfect is truly what makes these characters perfect. Audience members of any faith or lack thereof will find it easy to climb onboard '#Blessed' with its lovable characters, haunting biblical interludes, catchy music, and 1980s-Molly-Ringwald-film vibe." "'Thom Pain' completely strays from the comfort of familiar dramatic elements like character or plot: the show is quite literally based on nothing...To do all this and literally say 'fuck you' to the audience, while still maintaining their respect and attention, is flooring to witness. While unsuspecting audience members might be offended, this revival underlines how, even fourteen years on, there are so many aspects of Eno’s play that the theatre world is just beginning to scratch the surfac... “A playful ensemble serving just the right amount of sugar to complement theories on human consciousness...Errico shines as a twofold character far from your typical ingenue...This feel-good musical remains as good for your spirit as a drive through the country. Errico and the entire ensemble are a warm-toned delight to experience, better enjoyed in the intimate house than on a booming Broadway stage, where the cast’s many subtle charms would be lost.” Full Review

"The cast is impeccable...The plot—albeit simple—becomes rich through Susan Stroman's direction and choreography...However, 'The Beast in the Jungle' is brought to even greater heights through the use of puppetry and expertly designed props employed by the women of the play. The 'Beast in the Jungle' provides a sure-to-please evening of classically trained artists free of overcomplicated commentary that sucks you into an era of entertainment that, in 2018, is increasingly rare." "Piper delivers an intimate performance within the large proscenium at New World Stages. Through all the teary moments in the audience, Piper manages to bring a smile back with one of her jokes and expert physical comedy. In some moments, it is easy to eagerly await the next punch line, like watching a stand-up comic's routine, while in others, Piper captures true theatre and creates a tangible stillness in the crowd as she, herself, struggles to find the right words." "It seems as though these transitions and the set exist to show just how out of place Chapman is—his social skills are a bit lacking, especially sexually, and the musical transitions allow the audience to see his stiff attempts at dancing. But the transitions tend to cut off all of the tension built up in the previous scene...Even if this extended metaphor doesn’t work for you, you may still leave wanting to find your high school copy of 'The Catcher in the Rye' and give it another read." The writing itself is a pure joke machine...This nimble cast—under excellent direction by David Goldyn—knows exactly how to make the audience squirm with anxiety and then let the tension snap in moments of sheer comic genius. "Despite the heaping portions of lesbian jokes and drag ferocity, it does cross into deeper territory...Although both characters identify as women, neither plays the all-too-common submissive and smiling straight-white-cisgender ingenue. But if neither fits the old-fashioned theatrical female mold, both have many reasons to be smiling women just the same. As a writing/acting comedy duo, Alton and Warnock are polished and ready to crack you up, and potentially inspire you as well." Full Review
