Mara Lieberman

MARA LIEBERMAN has served as Executive/Artistic Director of Bated Breath Theatre Company since 2012. Since then, she has directed Interludes: Beyond the Foot of the Stage for Real Art Ways, The Un-making of Toulouse-Lautrec at the Wadsworth Atheneum and The New Britain Museum of American Art, Freedom: In 3 Acts for The Amistad Center for Art & Culture, Wild Things: The Life and Work of Maurice Sendak and the immersive art auction play, Beneath the Gavel, also at The New Britain Museum of American Art. Beneath the Gavel will have its Off-Broadway premiere this March.

Mara earned her BA in theater from Sarah Lawrence College and a MA in Performance Studies from Northwestern University where she was nominated for the William Morris Agency award for her one-woman show, Feeling Science: The Life of Barbara McClintock. Before that, she served as Lloyd Richards’ assistant at the National Playwrights Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center. Mara has adapted texts, directed and performed original works as part of the New York International Fringe Festival and the American Living Room festival co-sponsored by Lincoln Center and HERE. In addition, she directed an adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s, To the Lighthouse at New Georges Room and the 78th Street Theater Lab in NYC. Also in New York, Mara co-founded a theatre company called The Director’s Collective which focused on devising original work based on the practice of Suzuki Method of Actor Training, Viewpoints and Composition. Mara has taught at Trinity College where she co-directed/adapted Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, Manchester Community College and has served as a faculty member at the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts.
