"Engaging as it is, it is held barely intact by the thread of its theme...I’m afraid that being authentic and courageous as a theater director is not necessarily the story of, well, great theater...If the arc of 'Prince of Broadway' might disappoint, the performances rarely do...While I’m happy to hear strong performances from a strong cast in strong music from some of Harold Prince’s most important musicals, storytelling, something that Hal Prince does like no one can, is just a tad absent." Sunset Boulevard

"The chance to see this beautiful work is rare. So please, go see it...'Sunset' plays strongly to Webber’s strengths, a composer who succeeds in broad strokes. And there are many musical moments in 'Sunset' that are absolutely stunning...This cast, lead by a sixty-nine year old Ms. Close, is excellent. Webber’s lush score soars with an orchestra of 40...But the night comes with pitfalls. Price’s production borrows from a (now somewhat tired) trend toward minimalism." Full Review

Shuffle Along

"A cast of Broadway’s biggest talents dazzle in the disappointing 'Shuffle Along'...There is so much to love about this re-imagining of Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle’s ground-breaking 1921 Broadway musical...Where 'Shuffle Along' fails, and quite spectacularly given the talent associated with the project, is in the show’s book...Wolfe fails to wrench a theatrical journey from a single point...A noble effort. But just because it happened, doesn’t make it interesting." Full Review

"Sally Field comes to Broadway in a tour-de-force role, played with a gentle and devastating accuracy. Field appears in what is a most interesting and satisfying production...This latest, very smart rethinking moves 'Menagerie' slightly out of the South and much deeper into the world of family. All family. The result is tender and substantial...If you love great acting, then take the opportunity to see this particular great acting in this particular production." Full Review

"Stephens is wildly successful in applying uncertainty principles to human character and relations, codifying realities we know somewhere to be true, but haven’t yet the language to exactly identify...The result is exquisite – delicate in its observation of two damaged souls stumbling their way to the other...This production is bare-boned, throwing the efforts of these two into nice relief and if you like watching the work of solid actors, you’ll love this production." King Charles III

"Not a solid foundation for great drama, so Bartlett creates characters as imaginatively as he does plot and the result is good clean royal fun. This isn’t to say that the play is perfect, and some of its conceits strain. Characters speak, at times, in blank verse...It’s not easy to out-Shakespeare Shakespeare. But there is plenty that is very good about the production." Full Review
