About:  I go to theater because it is my favorite artistic medium. Originally I was skeptical of this site, as theater for me should challenge people, and I fear the new social media approach to "yelping" might harm the medium. An audience member should have the chance to see for themselves and come to th... Read more Read less

Mies Julie
East Village
Great acting, Excellent adaptation, Great direction, Resonant, Profound

See it if You like an excellent adaptation that still maintains the quality of the original but through a new and refreshing lens.

Don't see it if You are not open to new interpretation of a classic, have difficulty with accents, are not open to fresh and new directors or actors.

Also Miss Julie is part of the fabric of modern theater. I was impressed by... Read more Read less

Oslo (Broadway)

Disappointing, Dated, Confusing, Cliched, Banal

See it if You are compelled by the subject matter.

Don't see it if You want well developed female leads, a plot that compels, leads that are empathetic.

Also I could have done without Act 1. This is how strange I found it dramat... Read more Read less

Subversive, Sharp, Excellent acting, Focussed, Dense

See it if You enjoy a challenge. The play defies traditional story-telling structure, makes philosophy active, and seems written for today's politics

Don't see it if Dense language and references to history are not for you. The play also veers from structure most audiences find accessible.

Also I know this piece is not for everyone. But for me, it was a searing at... Read more Read less

Mlima's Tale
East Village
Exquisite, Excellent directing, Poetic, Stunning writing, Impressive

See it if You want a deeply nuanced story, with excellent direction and writing that is swiftly paced and yet subtle in metaphor.

Don't see it if You should see it.

Also This piece is so layered in it's examination of society's complicity i... Read more Read less

Disappointing, Dated

See it if The score is beautiful--as are the voices. And the leads are gems of the Theater.

Don't see it if I couldn't get past the campy direction and cheesy takes. I guess this just wasn't for me. If it wasn't for Bernadette I would have left.

Upper W Side
Cliched, Banal, Dated, Insipid, Overrated

See it if You get excited by callous, selfish characters and do not need any redemption or hope in your narrative. Obvious commentary doesn't bother.

Don't see it if You need an emotional connection to any character in a play, are bored to tears by finance on stage, you hated Wall Street or the Wolf of ..

Also I general like Akhtar's work and was surprised at how slap dash this f... Read more Read less

1984 (Broadway)

See it if The lead female is strong, good lights and sound

Don't see it if You like a strong story, with well acted male lead - bored.

Cliched, Confusing, Entertaining, Quirky, Resonant

See it if Only slightly racist - don't see with latin or gay friends. Otherwise...okay.

Don't see it if You like mildly offensive charm.

See it if You like great directing, writing and storytelling.

Don't see it if need linear narrative.

Entertaining, Great acting, Edgy, Epic, Masterful

Midtown W
Absorbing, Ambitious, Intelligent, Masterful, Resonant

See it if You think you should see the best show on Broadway.

Don't see it if You are a servant of the patriarchy.

Absorbing, Intelligent, Must see, Thought-provoking

See it if An important topic, well written and beautifully directed. For a first staging it proves resonant. Multiple endings need focusing.

Don't see it if Aren't interested in opening your mind to other voices and perspectives than the white patriarchy.

Also Some storylines need focusing (like the gay storyline and the Isis rev... Read more Read less

The Baby Monitor
East Village
Absorbing, Great acting, Great writing, Masterful, Exquisite

See it if You like plays inspired by real fears and honesty. This could and does happen.,

Don't see it if You are not ready to change.

Confusing, Enchanting, Great writing, Romantic, Hard to see

See it if You want to see a powerful Othello and Desdemona relationship, are interested in a fantastic Emilia, are a fan of this great play

Don't see it if You want to see the actors. The tall ensemble block the leads (when the set isn't). You think Iago should be a dramatic character.

Also I don't get why Iago played for laughs and winked at the audience. It ... Read more Read less

Hilarious, Edgy, Entertaining

See it if Real people and not over intellectualized theater excite you. Poetry meets brutal honesty in fierce dialogue and delivery .

Don't see it if The tone was in and out the evening I saw it, and the humor was lost in places.

Also I adore this playwright and this was a good presentation of the piece.... Read more Read less

The best on broadway, Great acting, Entertaining, Exquisite

See it if The film is transformed into a stunning, simple work of art. The tension is high, though the script never hits you over the head with it.

Don't see it if It's probably helpful to know something of the tensions in that part of the world...but I can't imagine anyone not being riveted by this.

Upper E Side
Great acting, Ambitious, Absorbing

See it if Yerma is a Master work in direction, adaptation, design and acting. The audience truly watches a brilliantly crafted journey.

Don't see it if It's not easy to watch something so real and performances so ruthless and vulnerable. But for me, it is far more rewarding.

Delightful, Enchanting, Great acting, Dizzying, Hilarious

See it if You want to enjoy two sumptuous female characters who are the most likeable villains I have seen in years. Like delicious language.

Don't see it if You don't like to be challenged with a script that twists perceptions of good and if you want a clear protagonist. There is nuance to this.

Also The audience loved it the night I was there. The play presents a set o... Read more Read less

Don't see it if You get confused easily.

Delightful, Entertaining, Exquisite, Why were they all white?, Romantic

See it if Well sung, acted, and why were they all white?

Don't see it if you like good acting and white-washing.

Don't see it if You like the movie. Or have taste.

Waitress (NYC)
Midtown W
Delightful, Enchanting, Entertaining, Dizzying, Quirky

See it if You like a great score, stunning lyrics, and enjoy pie!

Don't see it if Too bad about Jesse Mueller - wish I could have seen Betsy Wolfe. But awesome score. Direction was glossy and not deeply impactful.

If I Forget
Midtown W
Absorbing, Great acting, Epic, Resonant

See it if You have a time traveling machine. This is better than August Osage County. It provides context for metaphor and poetry for dialogue.

Don't see it if You are boring and banal.
