Slave Play

Magical MissTari Tour

"Monstrously smart, fabulously acted, stunningly designed and completely provocative. I laughed and I was stunned. I'm not sure that I found it to be completely successful, though, as a piece of theater. It was clever, topical, fascinating, and intellectually engaging...but I couldn't latch onto any emotional connection. This may be the playwright's intent..But I wanted to feel more than I did...I did enjoy how the play always kept me on my toes." Full Review

“Seeing such a diverse group of people onstage was inspiring...The highlight was the fantastic original score by Shaina Taub...She chose just the right spots to musicalize and her lyrics smartly jumped off from Shakespeare's text...A terrific marriage of text and music...I found this delightful, heartfelt and tuneful incarnation to be just the thing to see on a summer night...The performers were all terrific." "Simply fantastic...Leonard and Finneran are terrific. They're naturally funny and find the humor so easily, yet they can turn deadly serious on a dime, and not seem false...Spontaneously performed, the words just sounded so fresh and new...'The Zoo Story' remains as funny and as terrifying as ever... Sparks' Jerry...found a terrific balance of smart, funny, scary and sad...The way Albee uses language, in both acts, is masterful. Obviously. I loved every minute of watching the show." Full Review

"An overwhelming, wonderful, theatrical, human experience...I was appalled, devastated, exhilarated and amazed...I felt powerless, enraged, emboldened, and understood...Kind of a mishmash of a Brechtian musical and a Jacobean revenge play...'Fucking A' is dark, dark, dark, with fatal inevitability hanging over it, though there is also a lot of humor and really terrific songs...Parks is dramatically showing us the plight of women and what women do to subvert and survive...The acting is sublime." Cost of Living

"All four characters are beautifully drawn-their strengths and their weaknesses are very well-written...I thought both relationships were completely realistic and the struggles were compelling to watch...The way the play depicted all of the characters as human, with egos and faults and prejudices...was terrific. And the play was terrifically funny at times as well...The acting was fantastic...I love a play that upends stereotypes and defies expectations. So I highly recommend 'Cost of Living.'" Full Review

"Last week's performance was on fire! They were making me laugh at a great clip, and it was the perfect show to see to raise the spirits during a long long week. Kline is so expert at physical comedy, but he also captures the ruefulness that hides under the always onstage veneer. His line readings are a riot, his double takes sublime and the tender moments are completely touching...Really, everyone just seemed to be having a grand time up there, so we in the audience did, too." The Antipodes

Magical MissTari Tour

“I enjoyed myself immensely and appreciated the world and characters created, but I was ready for the play to be over when it ended…There was so much truth and humor in the interaction between the writers…The cast was also spectacular, working as a unit, yet each taking their moment in the spotlight and running with it. Baker is so expert at creating realistic people with just a few brush strokes, and these actors build on those brush strokes beautifully.” Full Review

Amelie

Magical MissTari Tour

“Playwright/librettist Craig Lucas works his magic here. I was also quite taken with Nathan Tysen's smart and quirky lyrics…If I wished the music had a little more French verve to it, OK. Not a deal breaker for me, but just a little bit would've been nice…If your tolerance for quirk and whimsy is low, 'Amelie' might not be the show for you...Mainly, I just let myself go with the gentle charms of ‘Amelie’…Soo is simply delightful in the show…It was sweet, wistful, and charming.” Full Review

Everybody

Magical MissTari Tour

"I did find the play less successful in some places than in others. The production is very meta-theatrical, with lots of in-jokes and seemingly off-the-cuff humor...All of the actors were really terrific and put in quite physical performances as well as smart and funny ones. 'Everybody' can be riotously funny at times and it can also be very heady and esoteric...I think Branden Jacobs-Jenkins has a lot of things he wants to say and I think he's worth listening to." Magical MissTari Tour

"The wit and intelligence and fierce pride was on full display in the lead characters, there's no doubt about that. But the production has been directed at a glacial pace...Even though they emitted no sexual sparks or chemistry, Schreiber and McTeer are always worth seeing. They're such wonderful, intelligent but also vitally alive stage performers that watching them construct a character from top to bottom is fascinating. They both had delicious moments, but generally not with each other." Full Review

for a previous production "I love the story, I love Kevin, and I love this adaptation...After all these years, there's an ease and such clarity to the performances. Each character, even our omnipotent narrator, is so beautifully delineated, it's as if we've seen 20 actors instead of one. The ease also added a lot more natural humor in the piece, which then set off the powerful humanity at the end of the evening. I was weeping, as always." Full Review

Sell/Buy/Date

Magical MissTari Tour

"Each character is pitch-perfect in dialect, attitude, physicality-everything that makes a character more human and more relatable, Jones gets right...The show is pretty fast and often very funny about a very serious topic. I maybe would've had more darkness and more pain to more sharply contrast...I like a good deep painful theatrical catharsis. I probably left 'Sell/Buy/Date' without that huge catharsis, but that doesn't mean I didn't have a huge, incredibly good time." Full Review

The Roads To Home
West Village
Magical MissTari Tour

"'The Roads to Home' is another gentle, truthful, funny, touching piece about family, memories, regret and home...Not much 'happens,' but we learn so much about these characters, about life, about ourselves, that it seems as if everything happens in the two hours we spend in Houston...I do love how Horton Foote wrote such amazingly realistic women, who are idiosyncratic and three-dimensional, and oh-so-relatable." Small Mouth Sounds

"These actors are expert at wordless interaction and there is so much humor and so much pain in this play, it's amazing to think that most of it was performed in silence...'Small Mouth Sounds' is unlike anything I've ever seen before and I was so taken with it. I loved the audacity of it and I thought the acting was the finest I've seen, across the board, in a long time." Full Review

The Healing

Magical MissTari Tour

"There were a lot of laughs interspersed with the sadder moments, and all of the actors had terrific comic timing...This story of disability was told with great authenticity and truth...Bravo, cast of 'The Healing'...Hunter has written truthful, interesting characters, with flaws and demons. The dialogue was quirky and smart and always completely authentic to the characters...This was a smart, funny, sad, touching piece about a topic I found fascinating." Full Review

Signature Plays

"I thought they were amazing. All really crazy, off-kilter, not-entirely-completely-successful, but thoroughly mesmerizing and so worthwhile. Directed and designed with incredible imagination...It's hard to imagine these three landmark plays ever being performed together again in such a first-rate production, so I do highly recommend you get yourself over to the Signature Theatre." Sense & Sensibility
West Village
Magical MissTari Tour

for a previous production "The show is very smartly adapted and directed for a cast of ten versatile actors. Obviously, I already love the story and it is being told her very well. Most of the actors play more than one role and they do so beautifully. Each character is perfectly delineated and shows so many of the foibles that Austen captured so well. Everyone had the opportunity to make me laugh and everyone had the opportunity to make me cry." Full Review

Incident at Vichy
Midtown W
Magical MissTari Tour

"In my opinion, the play itself is perhaps a tad flawed, in that some of the dialogue is very pointed and didactic, though there is some of Miller's characteristic bold and blunt truths, plus most of the characters are stereotypes...Since this is a 90-minute play, perhaps Miller just wanted to get on with things and not bother with shadings. Even with those flaws, I found the play riveting. Compelling. Horrible (in the best theatrical way). And impossible to look away." Full Review

A Delicate Ship
Midtown W
Magical MissTari Tour

"At first it seems like this will be a standard sort of love triangle/relationship play, but 'A Delicate Ship' is more than that...It's all done really well, with strong dialogue and keen insight into these characters, who truly seem like people instead of mouthpieces or stereotypes. And, like most good plays, the more specific the situations for these characters, the more universal the play seems...All in all, it was a lovely evening. I enjoyed 'A Delicate Ship' quite a lot." Magical MissTari Tour

“A play about straight white men and their privilege, but it's somehow heartbreaking and about more than whiteness. It's also somehow about gender and roles and ideas of success...I was completely upended. Just the way everything seemed to be turned upside down - and not just for the effect of turning things upside down, but to show us ourselves, I think - was genius...I found it to be profoundly funny, profoundly sad, and profoundly unique.” Full Review

Magical MissTari Tour

"The play was terrific, very funny and sad and real, with sibling squabbles, shorthand and miscommunication. The acting was fantastic, all across the board, with a special shoutout to Jamie Brewer. She also has Down syndrome, and she is simply spectacular. She gives Amy such heart and humor, with a twinge of pain underneath...You can see a lifetime of being taken for granted in her performance, with no self-pity, and she is wonderful...Monk and Blum are just so effortlessly real." Magical MissTari Tour

"An overwhelming, wonderful, theatrical, human experience...I was appalled, devastated, exhilarated and amazed...I felt powerless, enraged, emboldened, and understood. Incredible...The monologues are chilling and scary, and oh so sad...The powerlessness of women, the lack of support for single mothers, and an uncaring bureaucracy all make the experience of watching ‘In the Blood’ completely timely and timeless. The acting is all superb." Full Review

"I had a great time at 'Bubbly Black Girl'...The music is just filled with joy, I don't know how else to describe it. It's as thought-provoking as it is joyful, though. Even when 'Bubbly Black Girl' tackles tough subjects, which it does...the musical presents these serious moments with clear-eyed honesty, yet you still feel the affection for these characters...Nikki M. James is a delight as Viveca, so so funny and smart...The direction and the choreography are just first-rate." Full Review

Hamlet (Waterwell)

"I thought the use of the Farsi language, in certain circumstances, was excellent. The show is brilliantly staged...The acting ranges from the very good to the not so very good, but I will consider that something that can be worked through during previews...Everyone mainly told the story quite well and I enjoyed myself." "I was just stunned by it...So gloriously, so lovingly put together. It appears seamless—the script, the staging, the music, the acting, the designs. It's all of one captivating piece that builds in sympathy and warmth throughout into such a transcendent moment of beauty and tragedy and hope, I couldn't speak...This play is just so full and rich...The acting is simply spectacular...Just thinking of the gorgeous images makes me long to see the show again right away." Oslo (Broadway)
Upper W Side
Magical MissTari Tour

"The whole cast was fantastic. Most of the actors, except for a handful of the leads, played multiple roles and were wonderfully adept at doing so. The physical production is also terrific...You would think that a play dealing with such fraught politics would be heavy and serious all the time, but 'Oslo' is also surprisingly funny throughout...I'm so impressed by a play that takes a real subject, on which you know the outcome, and still creates suspense and tension. That takes real craft." Full Review

“I find this musical so brilliant, it's hard to even write about it coherently…It was extremely intimate and personal and made each performance choice and song lyric stand out…Each of the performances were also so detailed and so lovingly portrayed...I thought Gyllenhaal was amazing and I just can't get over his wonderful singing. Not only does he have lovely tone, but his diction of the incredible lyrics was perfect…Annaleigh Ashford was a wonderful Dot.” Full Review

"After only a couple of minutes, I felt like I knew all of these characters and I could've spent all day and all night with them, hearing their stories, and watching their interactions with each other…There was a palpable chemistry, and a crackling energy, to the entire cast…I also laughed. A LOT...I feel like I'm eavesdropping on fascinating lives, and real people, when I'm watching Wilson's plays come to life, and I love that." Full Review

Magical MissTari Tour

"I was practically heaving with sobs by the end…Ben Platt is giving an extraordinary, star-making performance as Evan Hansen…His singing is first-rate, of course, but his complete immersion into this awkward, idiosyncratic kid is totally complete…The entire score is fantastic and I can't wait until I can get the cast album…The entire cast is incredibly wonderful…It made me think about so many things, alongside having the enjoyment of seeing a terrific piece of theater." Magical MissTari Tour

"It's theatrically wonderful how the air is completely sucked out of the room and your heart breaks for the relationships that have been forever changed. The acting is superlative - all three performers are truly at the top of their game and they complement each other beautifully...Basically writing about yourself and insidiousness of institutional racism is a powerful thing to do, and Fugard is masterful in getting that below the surface." "'That Golden Girls Show!' is pretty silly and we had a great time experiencing it together. Is it a great show? Not really...It's merely a fun night out, leaving you wanting to go home and put on the DVDs you have in your collection...Having half the cast not quite as sharp as the other half also led to the not-as-funny-as-I-wanted-it-to-be thing...We giggled at the terrific one-liners that are so iconic. It was the original stuff that didn't make us giggle quite as much." Full Review

Good
Chelsea
Magical MissTari Tour

"A sobering evening…'Good' is a horrifying tragedy, with many comic and musical interludes...I think this particular production was less successful with the comedy and the music, but the acting, especially from the lead actor, was mainly very strong and that made the second act and the arc of the play pretty compelling. There were some odd, weak directorial choices, but there were also some very strong and powerful statements...Everything seemed so relevant and timely, at times it was scary." Full Review

Himself and Nora
West Village
Magical MissTari Tour

"There's a lot of 'telling,' which doesn't leave much room for 'showing' plot. The script is very oddly put together, in my opinion. The songs are mostly all filler and we get plot points shoved into a few lines of dialogue. It didn't really make sense to me. I guess I wonder why the author thought this needed to be a musical. There doesn't seem to be a feel of Joyce in either the book or the lyrics...The pop-ish score is pleasant enough, but it's not dramatic and it's not theatrical." Full Review

The Crucible
Midtown W
Magical MissTari Tour

"I just don't get this particular director's penchant for stripping classic plays of their time, place and context to make them 'timeless'...Stripping plays of everything except what you consider the theme does NOT make them timeless. It makes them empty...Frankly, all I saw were pretentious director tricks. Of course, in theory it was hard to understand anything because of the junk imposed on the play." Full Review

Washer/Dryer

Magical MissTari Tour

"'Washer/Dryer' is not just a silly comedy, though there is quite a bit of silliness throughout the evening. The play asked some really interesting questions, at least for me, about self-identifying, self-awareness, compromise and expanding pre-existing notions...Overall, there was a sweetness to the proceedings that I enjoyed and I think a breezy comedy is just the thing every now and then." for a previous production "GO SEE THIS PLAY. It isn't often that I get to see a play about blue-collar workers, about people I know and grew up with, so I'll always stand up for one. "I was still completely engaged and enthralled throughout the evening. There were so many questions and ideas being tossed around and I especially loved that there were no real answers given...All I can say is I found so much to think about, struggle with, and enjoy in this play. It's such a treat to feel invigorated by smart, original writing." Full Review

King Liz

Magical MissTari Tour

"'King Liz' was bold, smart and told me a story I haven't seen depicted on stage before...Even if you're not a sports fan, you'll find much to appreciate in this play. It has quite a bit of humor mixed with the tension of the story, and, to me, it ended someplace unexpected. Plus, you'll be lucky enough to see a terrific actress at the top of her game. I highly suggest you pick up a ticket and check out the play before it closes in mid-August." Full Review
