Hangmen (Broadway)

Masterful, Refreshing, Great writing, Great staging, Intelligent

See it if you appreciate a well-constructed drama that tells an interesting story. After seeing several losers , we were gratified to see this winner!

Don't see it if You don't like facing some difficult issues or watching some difficult events. This play is not fluff; it is serious entertainment.

Indulgent, Uninteresting, Campy

See it if you like this playwright or if you like drag queen roles, even those not well written. About half the audience loved it. I didn't.

Don't see it if You value well-written, well staged plays. In my book, this one was a stinker.

Over-long, Great acting, Ambitious

See it if you like to see how an idea is developed onstage & don't mind a play that doesn't know how to end. Feels like a work in development.

Don't see it if you need a tight, finished piece with no wasted moves. Although the writing is brilliant, it would benefit from editing.

The Mikado (NYGASP)
Upper E Side
Unnecessary opening scene, Too long

See it if NYGASP does a wonderful job with the G&S repertory, although in the name of political correctness, they have not done Mikado a service.

Don't see it if You don't like goofy costumes in place of the Japanese clothing and if you hate contrived additions. The opening scene is a loser.

Also In an attempt at political correctness, an opening scene was inserted ... Read more Read less

Sing Street
East Village
Doesn't touch the movie, Disappointing

See it if You want another teenage angst show. Some fine acting, singing just okay. Overall, a great disappointment compared to the movie.

Don't see it if The movie was wonderful, the show is not. Something got lost in the translation. There is youthful exuberance here, but its' not enough.

Overrated, Disappointing

See it if If seeing big stars on stage floats your boat, go for it, but I wanted a better story and a less confusing presentation.

Don't see it if By the time I figured out what was going on, I no longer cared. Too many false starts, too many rabbit holes. Just tell the story.

Great staging, Superb acting, Perfect writing

See it if You value perfectly written, perfectly performed play, funny and serious, excellent resolution, probably the best play I have seen this yr.

Don't see it if You object to some yelling and, yes, some f-bombs. But this show is a great one, well worth seeing.

Linda Vista

Great singing, Great writing, Great acting, Brilliant

See it if you like Tracy Letts, who is absolutely brilliant. The first act is one hilarious line after another, mounted on a cleverly revolving stage.

Don't see it if You dislike onstage nudity and sex. There are f-bombs galore. The 2nd act could be tighter, as things unravel in a highly predictable way.

During previews
Relevant, Thought-provoking, Powerful, though strident

See it if you like to be berated about white privilege and black stereotyping. The acting is intense, and the message is worth hearing. At least once.

Don't see it if The message is pounded in over and over. After the first 15 minutes, nothing new is said. Must actors of any color tell directors of (cont'd

Also any color how to interpret a play? Does a black actor know more about ... Read more Read less

Great staging, Well written, Entertaining

See it if you like tightly written plays with well developed characters. The acting is quite good, and the production comes off with precision.

Don't see it if You object to cursing and some sex talk. Nothing too offensive here, but it's the way some of these people talk.

Great writing, Intelligent, Masterful, Great acting, Clever

See it if You like Chekhov and modern reinterpretations of Chekhov. Feiffer is as good as Posner, and this play is even better than AP's No Sisters.

Don't see it if Profanity is a problem for you or if you are a Chekhov purist.

Also The plays of Chekhov are masterworks that some modern playwrights have... Read more Read less

Overdone, Tedious, Dated, Disappointing

See it if you loved the movie. The show reproduces the glamour and noise of the movie and contains many of the same recycled top 40 songs.

Don't see it if Although everyone on stage worked hard, it was not enough to make up for a tired story and lack of an original score.

Also The audience loved it and you might also, but I found it annoying. All... Read more Read less

See it if You like Duncan Sheik's music (Spring Awakening, Alice by Heart). The vocal performances and acting are wonderful.

Don't see it if You want tunes you can hum and songs that serve the story. The book was wonderful but the music fell flat for me.

Also The gospel rock songs were crowd pleasers, largely due to the power of... Read more Read less

See it if Perhaps there was too much build-up for this one. Female leads very well acted. The story is mildly interesting.

Don't see it if Male leads written and perhaps played too strongly, no nuance. The ne'er-do-well Jack is a total bum with no redeeming features.

Must see, Great singing, Great staging, Hilarious

See it if A revival, yes, but one of the funniest shows I have ever seen. The hilarity is almost nonstop. The acting and singing are not to be missed.

Don't see it if you hate to laugh. There is no other reason to miss this production.

Midtown W
Loud, Inventive set, Irreverent

See it if you like raunchy, over-the-top humor. It may be hard to understand the urban black idioms and speech, but the surtitles help. Amazing set.

Don't see it if You are put off by a superabundance of the f-, s-, and n-words or with graphic lesbian kissing and more. leave your 5-year-old at home.

Wonderful!, Great acting, Great writing, Great staging

See it if you have ever seen an Aaron Posner play, you know he is an incredible writer. If you have never seen Aaron Posner, you are in for a treat!

Don't see it if You are offended by adaptations of Chekhov. But seriously, even the master would admire Posner's work. The actors were superb.

Surprisingly good, Delightful, Entertaining, Funny

See it if you like to laugh. We had low expectations, but were pleasantly surprised by how well done this show was. The first act had us in tears.

Don't see it if you can't tolerate the occasional profanity or macabre humor.

Noisy, Unfocused

See it if There is something about this play that pleased many people and left others stumped. An attempt to explore cultural attributes of beauty?

Don't see it if I didn't get it. The delivery of most lines at top volume with great urgency did not make it clearer to me what was message was being sent.

Also Reading other reviews did not make it clearer. Perhaps because I am a ... Read more Read less

The Ferryman (NYC)
Midtown W
Powerful, Masterful, Riveting

See it if you enjoy well-crafted, very powerful drama. Yes, the show needs some editing, but most of the speeches are effective rather than plodding.

Don't see it if You cannot sit still for almost 3-1/2 hours. This is very engaging theater, but will be a challenge for some bladders. Restrict fluids!

Alice By Heart
Midtown W
Disappointing, Insipid

See it if Beats me. Many young people in the audience seemed to like it, but I didn't get it.

Don't see it if You need coherence. Yes, the play tries to be weird, and, yes, weird can work if it is sufficiently clever. This show was just weird. Sorry.

Network (NYC)
Midtown W
Great acting, Great staging, Dizzying

See it if You appreciate great acting and over-the-top staging. The camera work is dizzying and captures the rapid-fire pace of the show.

Don't see it if You want an easy comedy or dancing girls. This play is real drama--some funny stuff but mostly in-your-face theater.

Mostly good acting, Mediocre writing, Competently staged

See it if You live in Brooklyn and enjoy local theater. The actors for the most part were good, although there was some over-acting.

Don't see it if You are intolerant of mediocre writing. There is some repetitiveness to the recounting of back-story that could have been trimmed.

West Village
Well-written but slow in spots

See it if you like quirky dramas with interesting story lines. The playwright did a nice job and the acting was very fine.

Don't see it if You are impatient. There are slow spots that could stand some tightening.

Disappointing, Overrated, Slow

See it if You're a Dylan fan and want to see how his songs were incorporated into a drama--except they weren't. The songs brought the action to a stop

Don't see it if You want a coherent story in which the songs amplify the story, not interrupt it. Singing & acting superb, but the project was misconceived.

During previews
East Village

See it if you want some kind of experimental theater and are not easily bored. This play is vaguely about race, culture, and being a writer.

Don't see it if you want to be entertained by a coherent story.

Midtown W
Amazing band, just amazing, Amazing costumes, High-energy, Great singing

See it if you love rock concerts. This show is a high-energy, well-lit, well-sung rock concern tribute to girl power. You will be on your feet.

Don't see it if you want a traditional musical with a story. Well, yes, there is the history story, but this show is just about fan-screaming fun.

Tumacho (2020)
East Village
Silly, Disappointing

See it if you love Ethan Lipton, but prepare to be disappointed. His usual wit is here replaced by uninspired goofiness. Fine cast, though.

Don't see it if you have no patience for silliness.

Energetic cast, Wonderful choreo, Stereotype-ridden

See it if If you are in high school or not long out of high school you will love it. Lauren Padden is worth the price of admission all by herself.

Don't see it if If stereotypes annoy you, you may want to skip this one, particularly given the ridiculously high seat pricing. I am torn about the show

Good idea, but a miss, Dull

The Wrong Man
Midtown W
Repetitious, Overrated, Athletic but tedious

See it if You are young and value this kind of music. I found it repetitive with mediocre lyrics to go with the mediocre plot development.

Don't see it if You want to be entertained in the theater. The athletic choreography had some engaging moments, but the insipid story line soon crashed in.

80 minutes bu still over-long, Lost focus, Thought-provoking, Great acting

See it if you value great acting and can tolerate the loss of focus in the final scenes. The first 2 scenes were on target, well written & executed.

Don't see it if The play loses focus in the penultimate scene and simply goes nutty in the final scene. What a shame. It was so strong up to that point.

Weak plot, Confusing, Great singing

See it if you know and love the music. There are stunning vocal performances, but no coherent plot. The empty seats after intermission told the story.

See it if You love this play,. Not Shakespeare's best work. Talented company of actors and dancers does not neutralize the misogyny.

Burn This
Midtown W
Incoherent, Weakly written, Disappointing

See it if you need to see Adam Driver and Keri Russell live onstage. It is an old trick putting movie actors in a weak play to sell tickets.

Don't see it if You want to understand what is being said. Driver's drunken rages plus the writer's lack of focus made much of the play incoherent.

Don't see it if Ponderous and draggy, this play lacked Ms Hamill's customary spark and wit.

See it if you understand Yiddish or love Fiddler so much you can excuse weak singing. The acting and staging are good, and Tevye is well played.
