Funny, Clever

See it if you want to see a short fast paced comedy that will give you plenty of, sometimes unexpected, reasons to laugh.

Don't see it if you’re put off by a brand of humour that often simply boils down to a shouting match between the characters.

Insipid, Disappointing
July 31st, 2022

See it if you want to see a nicely staged but sadly lackluster attempt at telling a well loved story.

Don't see it if you want anything akin to the classic Disney movie or you expect interesting or memorable music.

Funny, Slow
July 30th, 2022

See it if you like your Shakespeare lighthearted and funny- though some of the humour was a little hit and miss.

Don't see it if you want a grittier show that makes more use of its rather impressive staging.

Also Considering all of the people who are supposedly in love with one anot... Read more Read less

Great acting, Slow
July 26th, 2022

See it if you want a slow (almost painfully in places) adaptation of a classic, that is entirely carried by some great acting performances.

Don't see it if you don't like interpretations of classic works, or if you want a more satisfying and less gimmicky production.

Dated, Romantic
July 17th, 2022

See it if you loved the film enough to want to see it recreated on stage. The costumes, staging, acting and singing are are all competent enough.

Don't see it if you’re expecting more than a derivative musical with a completely forgettable score- even if it is by Bryan Adams- and a lacklustre story.

Delightful, delicious, de-lovely
July 16th, 2022

See it if you want an evening filled with humour, great singing, and great dancing. A de-lovely revival of a wonderful show.

Don't see it if you dislike old fashioned musicals.

July 14th, 2022

See it if you want to see an incredibly hard working cast playing multiple roles each, with some catchy songs and a great amount of wit.

Don't see it if you’re not remotely interested in the history this musical bases itself on or if you’re easily offended, as some of the jokes are a tad edgy

Also Considering there are only five cast members they did a remarkable job... Read more Read less

Thought-provoking, Intelligent
July 14th, 2022

See it if you enjoy a show that challenges you to think, that’s sublimely acted and offers closure the original lacked, without subverting its message

Don't see it if you either didn’t like the original Ibsen work- this will do precious little to change your mind- or if you don’t think a sequel was needed.

July 8th, 2022

See it if you want to see a brilliantly dark comedy that is thoughtful, emotional and hilarious in equal measure.

Don't see it if the themes in the play: death, mental illness, are likely to upset you or make you uncomfortable.

Also I have never watched Stranger Things or heard of David Harbour prior t... Read more Read less

Profound, Great singing, Absorbing
July 5th, 2022

See it if you want to see some brilliant pop songs interspersed with a story that says something profound if you peel back the melodrama.

Don't see it if you want a show that takes the time to explore mental health, suicide and anxiety among other topics- this feels too superficial at times.

Also Ben Platt has, for me, become synonymous with the role of Evan Hansen.... Read more Read less

See it if you want a good humored and brilliantly acted play that's quite slow, particularly in the second half.

Don't see it if you go in expecting a laugh a minute or a thought provoking and coherent story. Balloons- what a hill to die on.

Entertaining, Funny
July 1st, 2022

See it if you want a show filled with youthful joy and energy, brimming with excellent songs that are instantly catchy and memorable.

Don't see it if you don't want any kind of nuance from the film version.

Thought-provoking, Resonant
June 29th, 2022

See it if you want a hard-hitting and visceral play that’s excellently acted and sadly feels every bit as relevant today as when it was written.

Don't see it if you like a short and sweet play; this is at times a hard watch and clocking in at nearly 3 hours it might prove too much for some.

Great dancing, Slow, Delightful
June 28th, 2022

See it if you want to see a great but dance sequence heavy show set to a wonderful score by George and Ira Gershwin

Don't see it if you want a fast paced show with a modern aesthetic, this is dated (in the nicest possible way) and quite a slow burner.

Enchanting, Great staging, Clever
June 26th, 2022

See it if you want to see some stunning puppeteers and costumes that are more than deserving of all their recent accolades.

Don't see it if you don’t like puppetry (though this is more impressive than anything you’ll see in the lion king albeit on a smaller scale)

Loverly, Great writing, Clever
June 16th, 2022

See it if you want to see a classic musical filled with wit and featuring some brilliant songs.

Don't see it if you expect a flashy modern musical, this is very much of it’s time and there’s relatively little revision in either script or score.

87
Thought-provoking, Great acting, Absorbing
June 13th, 2022

See it if you want a detailed historical play that’s brilliantly acted from start to finish- though slow and in depth sometimes to it’s own detriment.

Don't see it if you can’t sit through a fairly serious 2.5 hours, though the acting and the surprising injection of humour will make it easier to swallow.

62
Entertaining, Edgy, Quirky
June 12th, 2022

See it if you want an irreverent and sometimes hilarious depiction of Tony Blair's life, that's a little hit and miss and could use some refinement.

Don't see it if you're expecting an intelligent satirical show. This is equal parts farce and slapstick- not that that's necessarily a bad thing.

75
Overrated, Great staging, Ambitious
June 11th, 2022

See it if you have nostalgia for the film and want to see a big budget stage version, featuring some incredibly innovative choreography and costumes.

Don't see it if you want a consistent show. Circle of Life is enchanting, but it’s the first song and the show struggles to reach those heights again.

Excruciating, Dated, Banal
June 11th, 2022

See it if you have an unflinching nostalgia for the show and want to hear the same catchphrases and gags over and over again.

Don't see it if you want a show that has any regard for narrative, or one that is funny. The songs, story and jokes were all forgettable and cringy at best.

See it if you want to see some absolutely stand out performances from a stellar cast, brilliant harmonies and some wonderful solos too.

Don't see it if you want a gritty, hard hitting tale. This is light hearted and fluffy at times, presenting the protagonists as inherently likeable.

See it if you love Grease enough to look past the hammy acting and generally poor solo numbers- though the ensemble shine when singing together.

See it if you absolutely love the Drifters and want to hear a large collection of their music. Beverley Knight is as masterful as you'd expect.

See it if you want to enjoy a short, but sweet evening of great and captivating pop music, telling the stories of Henry VIII and his ex wives.

Disappointing, Great singing, Banal
June 3rd, 2022

See it if you loved the film and want to hear Schwartz original songs brought to life on stage by some excellent performers- notably Christine Allado.

Don't see it if you want to see a show with an engaging story told through a lush set- this sadly makes little use of the massive space the Dominion offers.

See it if you're a fan of classic British humour, Noel Coward or, indeed, Jennifer Saunders.
