Funny, Refreshing, Delightful

See it if great energy, a welcoming environment, and silliness couched in pretty brilliant musical skills are interesting to you.

Don't see it if you're not into joy.

We're Gonna Die
Midtown W
Riveting, Refreshing, Enchanting

See it if you like good music, you need some catharsis, you want to see something offbeat done extremely well.

Don't see it if if you only like "musical theater" music, or if death/grief/loss/comparable subject matter might be a trigger for you.

Heartfelt, Hilarious, Enchanting

See it if Hilarious, rapid-fire, so well-paced, with an emotional resonance and gut-punch bigger shows wish they had.

Don't see it if No reason not to. Still one of my favorite theater experiences ever.

Indulgent, Fluffy, Funny

See it if you need a light-hearted night out. It's fairly funny, Ashmanskas & Leavel are divine, Kinnunen is the heart and soul.

Don't see it if you're looking for deeper layers, to be challenged, or you enjoy truly original musical theater. The Godspell number is excruciating.

Confusing, Great acting, Ambitious

See it if you want to see something different with a superb young cast. Rebecca Jimenez is a stand-out.

Don't see it if you need clear answers, or you don't like depictions of violence/gore. I had issues with the denouement but was thoroughly engaged.

Coal Country
East Village
Simple, Underbaked, Disappointing

See it if you love Steve Earle, the Public, West Virginia, real-life stories. The ensemble does solid work, and everything here feels true.

Don't see it if Why is this onstage? And why now? Similar stories have been told. I dig a simple show, but the simplicity here feels underdone.

Thought-provoking, Relevant, Great acting

See it if you love excellent Shakespeare. Incredibly well-acted and directed, doesn't shy away from any of the issues raised. Incredible ensemble.

Don't see it if Definitely long and a bit slow, but was worth the wait. Sink into its pace and it pays off.

The White Devil
West Village
Indulgent, Great acting, Dated

See it if you like stuffy old plays about (mostly-)white people. The cast was fairly good, Lisa Birnbaum a stand-out.

Don't see it if There was such potential to update this material and these themes -- so much of could have been relevant. Directorial choices baffling.

The Ferryman (NYC)
Midtown W
Slow, Indulgent, Cliched

See it if you've gotta see the show everyone seems to love.

Don't see it if extraordinarily underwritten female characters, a reveal that isn't at all, a baffling and unearned finale ...
