About the show

Shakespeare in the Square presents a stripped-down, food-inspired take on Shakespeare's classic comedy of desperate lovers, would-be tragedians, and  meddling fairies. More…

This production of 'Midsummer' will be performed on a bare stage with minimal props and costumes. A cast of six performs all the major roles, exploring the thematic and playful potential of doubling actors as fairies, lovers, royals, and mechanicals. This is a very physical, athletic production, and the creative staging transforms a blank space from Athens to the woods to the fairy kingdom and back again. To highlight the madness/mess of the play, the company has introduced a variety of food-stuff: the Athenian wood is filled with mashed potatoes, marshmallow goop, pasta, and more.

Clever, Hilarious, Great staging

See it if You want to see new life brought into a classic with a great cast of clowns! I see so many stale ‘Midsummers’, this was truly inventive

Don't see it if You don’t like silliness, food fights, or have a stick-up-the-butt mentality towards Shakespeare

"The most fun you will have at any Shakespearean production...This production is so well rounded as a whole. From the brilliant use of food to how each actor brings such versatility to the stage and such nuance to their characters, the hard work of this entire process is seen from beginning to en...

“This ‘Midsummer’ is far from normal...The big scene-stealer is a tangerine...I’m not sure why it’s food that emerges as the untidy central metaphor...There's no clear pattern in how and why the food shows up...Under Hasse’s inventive but often manic direction, the six actors form a cohesive ense...

“A messy and innovative version of a favorite Shakespeare comedy. If you like strong physical comedy, fresh takes on classics, and a slight risk of noodles in the hair, you'll be surprised and delighted...Each actor had shining moments individually, but what is most striking...is how the ensemble...
