From the show:
BEYOND BABEL is a critically acclaimed new theatrical dance show created by Keone & Mari Madrid and Hideaway Circus. The production is inspired by the classic tale of Romeo & Juliet and current social stories from all over the world. BEYOND BABEL was described by Broadway World as "a truly spectacular theatre experience not to be missed."
BEYOND BABEL is about the division of families, friends, and a community of people as authorities decide to build a wall between them. We follow two divinely linked lovers as they reconcile with the rising tensions of a populace cut in half. The show is set to a contemporary soundtrack and features a cast of twelve elite dancers. BEYOND BABEL also features large crochet backdrops, art installations, and yarn-based props created by artist London Kaye.
See it if you enjoy top-notch hip hop dancing. Talented yg performers work hard for 2 hrs! Endearing/engrossing. Strg visuals. Clever set/costumes.
Don't see it if you want a coherent story. Broad outline makes sense, but hard to follow. Still, if you like dance, this is a strg example of hip hop!
See it if Enthusiastic, super-talented young performers dance to chill hip-hop music. Emotional theme of lovers separated by immigration wall.
Don't see it if The theme got repetitive. A lot of the same conflict for 2 hours. That might not matter if you are just there to enjoy the dancing.
See it if you want an evening of extraordinary contemporary dance using an unusual crocheted set.
Don't see it if you are expecting a play. There is a plot and characters but mostly its dance. Fabulous dance!
See it if You want a dance piece very loosely inspired by Romeo & Juliet performed by a young, enthusiastic troupe of great dancers.
Don't see it if You're expecting theatre: this is all dance and/or R&J: while we have our star-crossed lovers, that's all the R&J you're getting...
See it if you like a wildly entertaining and well choreographed show. Clever use of music for the dance moves. Talented cast.
Don't see it if you don't like all modern music or loud music. If you can't manage steps this venue is not for you.
See it if Would like 2-hr full-length dance piece w emotional arc & good use of moving "walls".
Don't see it if Although it's ambitious in scope, the choreography/story becomes repetitive & gets draggy by the end.
Also Saw this at Gym at Judson during previews.
See it if You want to see phenomenal hip-hop dancers do their thing. You don't mind hip-hop music. You don't mind a loose plot.
Don't see it if You don't like hip-hop dancing or music. Every time they opened their mouths to talk it was a mess. Great dancers, bad verbal actors
See it if you like readily appreciable dance: synchronicity, moving in time to a regular beat, pretty large ensembles, virtuosic talent, hip hop.
Don't see it if you prefer more abstract, free association, atonal movement pieces.
See it if It’s a piece of dance theater. What I could see from my seat was terrific. BUT the Judson Gym is the wrong venue. Poor sight lines.
Don't see it if Unless you are in the first row, you will miss most of the show. A real shame.
See it if Beautiful and moving story of thwarted young love told through "west coast urban dance". Truly phenomenal performances.
Don't see it if A dancing modern Romeo and Juliet set amidst urban decay and separated by a wall, against a backdrop of contemporary music.
See it if you are a fan of So You Think You Can Dance. Basically a 2 hour SYTYCD routine. Talented and energetic company with some creative choreo.
Don't see it if you aren't interested in hip hop/contemporary dance. Romeo and Juliet plot felt like a stretch.
See it if you'd forgive a paper-thin storyline to enjoy a nearly wordless urban dance theater piece with brilliant choreography & great young dancers
Don't see it if you don't go for hip-hop, rap, alternative/indie pop music & dance; didn't like the urban style of Hamilton or Spring Awakening
See it if The choreography &execution of intensely articulated dance moves is amazing &performance is both moving & exuberant. Fence climb dance a wow
Don't see it if Story can be confusing as not only R&J as suggested but political overtones and more. Still an exquisite modern dance piece.
See it if you'd enjoy a story portrayed through contemporary dancing with unique staging by renowned choreo/dancers, Keone & Mari Madrid and the crew.
Don't see it if you don't enjoy stories portrayed strictly through dancing, don't like contemporary dance style or music, or need solid story lines.
See it if Street dance (mainly urban) masters, strong ensemble with sparkling solos; choreography seamlessly matching the music & lyrics; high energy!
Don't see it if Similar dance style, could feel repetitive after 2hrs; Floor movements & footwork blocked by front row audience; budgeted set; vague story
See it if you like modern dancing used to tell a story. Enjoy contemporary music as a soundtrack. Enjoy a looser crowd and a laid back atmosphere.
Don't see it if you mind some narrative logic issues. Do not mind having to read into various scenes as the dance tells the story.
See it if Don't miss it if you like West Coast break dance. This troupe's group dancing is a sight to behold! Very diverse dancers.
Don't see it if It's basically Romeo & Juliette story, with communication mainly conveyed by lyrics of pop & hip-hop songs. Full of youthful energy!
See it if You appreciate modern/urban dance, & tv shows like World of Dance, So You Think You Can Dance etc. Strong young committed company of dancers
Don't see it if You want clarity of story, a traditional show, elbow room in seating, or traditional sets

Don't see it if you do not like contemporary urban dance.
See it if you enjoy hip-hop dancing or the use of dance to tell a story
Don't see it if you need dialogue and full set pieces to enjoy a show or if you don't like watching dance as a means to tell a story.
See it if you'd like a riff on Romeo and Juliet done with hip hop and other urban dances by 12 wonderful dancers.
Don't see it if you don't like hip hip or contemporary music.
See it if you love dance, popular music, or hip hop. This piece tells a timely story through movement, and every performer is a complex character.
Don't see it if you prefer your stories to be told through dialogue or lyrics. This piece is dance-heavy, and the message is nice, but fairly simplistic.
