Entertaining, Energetic, Fluffy

See it if You loved the film, you love the 90's,you like energetic fluff and talented actors being very entertaining.

Don't see it if It's a musical about entitled kids in Southern California. All the pluses could also be seen as minuses. It's escapism, but in a nice way. Read more

Dated, Fluffy, Energetic, Well staged/choreographed, Weak lyrics

See it if you can't get enough of the movie, but it's no longer fresh & charming. Fast paced, well executed, fun dancing. Strong cast (saw understudy)

Don't see it if you want good lyrics; these are embarrassing. Still, gd voices/band. Will be gd for high sch/college prodns. Disappting, but entertaining.

Entertaining, Funny, Fluffy, Romantic, Quirky

See it if You are looking for a fun evening out and enjoy shoes about teenagers and 90s music.

Don't see it if You are looking for deep commentary. This is light-hearted entertainment. Or if rewritten lyrics to classic 90s songs will make you crazy.

Fun, Derivative, Fluffy

See it if you love the film and 90's music. Light silly energetic fun.

Don't see it if you're looking for anything original, including music. The "score" is re-purposed pop songs with updated lyrics - a bit awkward and cheesy.

Delightful, Disappointing, Hilarious, Fluffy

See it if you are a 90s kid. This is 100% nostalgia, from the music to the story, to the iconic lines.

Don't see it if you don't know Clueless or 90s music/culture. I don't think it would be fun or funny without that background.

Ambitious, Disappointing, Great staging, Great singing, Great dancing

See it if Dove Cameron SHINES in her NYC stage debut as Cher; casting, cast chemistry, singing and dancing chops uplift with a handful of scenes

Don't see it if ROCK OF AGES creatives have a more difficult time managing tone and humor; many awkward scene endings; more song misses due to new lyrics

Funny, Entertaining

See it if As if I had a clue. Decent, at times funny musical, interesting how words to songs were rewritten to fit the show. Brown, Cameron fine jobs.

Don't see it if Looking for something special. If fine work by cast is not enough. Young in audience seemed to love it.

Entertaining, Funny, Fluffy

See it if you love the classic movie - its almost word for word with parody songs of all the classics from the film!

Don't see it if you're looking for original music - this is more parody musical than new musical

“It's really good...Heckerling made a series of smart decisions in bringing her funny-yet-heartfelt movie to the stage. The first was using well-known 90's songs, to which she added sharp, funny lyrics. The familiar melodies establish the time period perfectly...The second...was to be true to the original movie...Hanggi's direction is well-paced and -focused. She balances the silliness and meaning perfectly. Hanggi's choreography is energetic, playful, and great fun...Cameron is perfect as Cher.”

“'A Star is Born' is hitting cineplexes everywhere, but it’s really happening in the totally charming lead performance by the totally charming Dove Cameron in The New Group’s totally charming musical adaptation...The cleverest innovation of pop music to create a full musical score in memory...Heckerling’s real ingenuity...is eschewing yet another, original, anonymous pop-rock-Broadway score...The songs actually inform character or move plot...Cameron is the perfect Cher.”

"A musical adaptation so insipid it makes one long for the good old days of 1642, when the Puritans shut down all the theaters...Heckerling’s film is capital-g Great, if not particularly good. Yet the musical adaptation wants to be something more; it wants to be topical and, even worse, important, climaxing in an environmental protest that feels neither earned nor particularly genuine."
