About the show

An actor drinks heavily (in the vein of Comedy Central's 'Drunk History') and then tries to corral others into enacting a story by the Bard. More…

Every night in a hidden library on 47th and 8th with over 15,000 books a Drunk Shakespeare society member will have at least five shots of whiskey and then attempt to perform in a Shakespearean play. Each performance by The Drunk Shakespeare Society requires a Patron, an audience member to be the King or Queen who helps run the show. Anything can, and does, happen. Craft cocktails available during the show.

Clever, Hilarious, Funny

See it if A theatrical experience that was hilarious and a great time. Talented improvers. Will see again.

Don't see it if You need more of a traditional show. It's Shakespeare but that's not why you see the show.

83
Intoxicating, High-spirited, Immersive, Mirthful

See it if you want to fall under the influence of a funny, boozy troupe whose comedy cup runneth over with a lot of frat humor & a shot of Shakespeare

Don't see it if you can't gin up the courage to engage & drink in the silly, clever, semi-improvised humor that's reliant more on pop culture than the Bard.

80
Clever, Delightful, Enchanting, Dizzying, Funny

See it if You enjoy having fun with your Shakespeare and don't have to take it seriously. You like to laugh/drink/and, at some points, interact.

Don't see it if You don't like mildly interactive shows or a loosy-goosy feel to your theater, you don't like to watch super talented actors have silly fun.

Great improv, Impressive classical text skills, Hilarious, Interactive, Not similar to any other theatre experience

See it if you desire an interactive, improv fueled, skillful use of classical text, heady cocktail of laughter & mayhem, it is MacB after all...

Don't see it if not interested in drinking, Shakespeare, having fun, participating, topical references, seeing talented actor/improv technicians work magic

80
Clever, Entertaining, Funny

See it if I had a GREAT time. You'll especially appreciate this if you know your Shakespeare and pop culture references.

Don't see it if you're under 21 or don't condone alcohol-infused fun.

80
Entertaining, Funny, Fluffy

See it if You want some fun with a dash of Shakespear; better with drinks

Don't see it if You are totally unfamiliar with Shakespear or want it presented in original form

86
Funny, Dizzying, Inappropriate, Refreshing, Hilarious

See it if you wanna take a night off from "The Theatah," & just have a ridiculous, silly, casual-Friday-gone-amok kinda experience. 90 minutes of fun!

Don't see it if you have an alcohol addiction. Just, no.

97
Clever, Entertaining, Funny, Must see, Hilarious

See it if You like Shakespeare and like to laugh. I love Shakespeare and it was hilarious to see the performers performing under the influence. LOL

Don't see it if You don't like to laugh and cannot follow Shakespeare.

72
Cliched, Disappointing, Dizzying, Fluffy, Funny

See it if you like "improve style" comedy using the Bard as a jumping off point. Many of his soliloquies, and characters, with comic asides, & booze.

Don't see it if you are a bard traditionalist. I've seen better parodies. - And I don't think the drinking added much. Fun concept & the actors worked hard

75
Dizzying, Confusing, Raunchy, Entertaining, Immersive

See it if you want an evening of total silliness & fun w/a group of friends. A little bit of Shakespeare knowledge helps. Can be messy, can be crude.

Don't see it if LOUD risque interactive shows bug you. They DO work their improv/prepared asses off, albeit messy, over-the-top, confusing as hell, but fun!

70
Quirky

See it if You're looking for a mix of Reduced Shakespeare Company and high school improv.

Don't see it if You want to spend the time heckling.

89
Funny, Hilarious, Entertaining

See it if A fun improv-y night out/ Will see again.

Don't see it if You don't like improv.

88
Ambitious, Delightful, Entertaining, Funny, Masterful

See it if All your friends raved about this. At the very least, you will be entertained.

Don't see it if Don't like Shakespeare at all or you are a Shakespeare purist

80
Clever, Entertaining, Funny, Raunchy

See it if you're a fan of Shakespeare and want to see a new (and drunk) take on it. Think Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged with alcohol.

Don't see it if you're not a drinker and your knowledge of Shakespeare is lacking.

80
Entertaining, Funny, Indulgent, Overrated, Edgy

See it if Like Shakespeare and want to drink with him.

Don't see it if Offended by post-college romp.

80
Funny, Entertaining

See it if MacBeth x improvised drinking games + alcohol = a fun, unpredictable time. Jokes vary on what you find funny. Beautiful library setting.

Don't see it if Want serious Shakespeare. Improv, alcohol, or extra games annoy you. Jokes lean liberal, so may be considered offensive to some.

Also Ticket from Gold Star for $28.50.

Clever, Entertaining, Funny, Delightful

See it if You want a fun night out, this is the show. Ever changing, anything goes with actors who are good at Shakespere and doodle at improve.

Don't see it if You expect straight laced Shakespere, or aren't willing to perhaps participate.

79
Entertaining, Funny, Refreshing, Raunchy, Cliched

See it if you are a fan of Shakespeare and want to see a twist on one of his plays. Currently it is MacBeth. I recommend drinking a few drinks before.

Don't see it if you don't want to see Improv based on MacBeth.

75
Clever, Entertaining, Dizzying, Hilarious

See it if you and your friends want to spend a hilariously boozy evening getting the gist of a Shakespeare play.

Don't see it if a boozy atmosphere is not your idea of fun.

78
Fun, Entertaining, Clever, Youthful, Saturday night shakespeare

See it if You want a fun night out with friends or a date in an unusual space. Acting is high energy and gags/jokes are clever.

Don't see it if You only take your Shakespeare straight or you dislike a bit of "bro" atmosphere.

80
Funny, Intelligent

See it if you like alcohol, improv, and reinvented Shakespeare (I feel like I learned a lot!)

Don't see it if you prefer your Shakespeare more straitlaced and traditional

73
Clever, Entertaining, Raunchy

See it if you plan on drinking on par with the cast

Don't see it if you love classical theater, this is Shakespeare, yes, but not the classical version

90
Entertaining, Hilarious, Refreshing, Epic, Funny

See it if you want to live a really immersive theater experience, live Shakespeare in a modern way. You can drink in a library, interact with the cast

Don't see it if you don't like Shakespeare and drink.

Also My friend was the king and I was the waterboy. They gave us Champagne,... Read more Read less

Entertaining, Funny

See it if you like Shakespeare and drinking, especially together

Don't see it if you are expecting a serious production of Shakespeare. It's abbreviated and goofy.

91
Clever, Entertaining, Funny, Must see, Hilarious

See it if You want your sides to ache from laughing. Want to see a hilarious side of Shakesphere with current political comments and innuendos.

Don't see it if If you don't like profanity or are not able to scream and curse

"It seems inevitable that soon all performing will be done either plastered or stoned. Among the early adopters of this trend, probably no one is applying more verve to the conceit than the members of the Drunk Shakespeare Society. Here’s hoping others learn from their sloshy example...It offers ...

"Drunk Shakespeare weaves improv comedy into Shakespeare's text. One actor in the play is given five shots of alcohol, often whiskey. Then, the thespian can interrupt the show by yelling "Drunk Point of Order!" and make up a rule that the other actors have to abide by. During a recent "Macbeth," ...

"It’s a pleasant mix of immersive theater, iambic pentameter, audience participation, slapstick comedy and bar hopping. The comic bits, while nowhere near as clever as what you’d find in “The Complete Works of Shakespeare (abridged),” are at least cute. Some lines from the movie “Independence Day...

"This self-described “drinking club with a Shakespeare problem” has, well, a Shakespeare problem. The good news is that it doesn’t have a comedy problem: this quintet had no trouble keeping the laughs frequent, buoyant, and loud for 90 solid minutes, and on some level, that’s all that matters. St...
