"I Spy A Spy" is a wacky musical comedy about immigration, unexpected romance, espionage, and the best chicken-tikka pizza in NYC. More…
From the show:
In a “melting pot” neighborhood in Hell’s Kitchen, José Rodriguez, an undocumented Mexican delivery guy has an American Dream – to become “a someone”. Alina Orlova, a beautiful but inept Russian spy, also has an American dream – to save the family’s “Fluff N’ Fold". Speeding through one hilariously preposterous plot twist after another, José and Alina embark on a wild adventure to fulfill their destinies – and live the American Dream!
I Spy A Spy is a wacky comedy of immigration, unexpected romance, espionage, and the best chicken-tikka pizza in NYC. It takes us on a musical rollercoaster ride (on which our duo encounters Mexican Thugs, Russian spies, a Pakistani pizza proprietor, a Korean deli owner, and the Department of Homeland Security!), while lovingly examining the power of the American Dream, the challenges we all face, and the universal love for “home”!
See it if You want a predictable sitcom style show that feels rather old fashioned with its sense of cops and robbers/Cold War Russia style comedy.
Don't see it if You’re looking for something fresh, fun and funny. This feels like a late night slog through TVLand.
See it if You want an easy semi charming musical with solid performances. It doesn’t know if it wants to be a screwball comedy or deep drama.
Don't see it if You want a well polished show. This is good but longer than it needs to be.
See it if Hard working ensemble giving their all to make this play a success. Uneven acting and singing - a few very good. Needs bigger band & sets.
Don't see it if Cute idea but play needs work - cut some dialogue and certainly some songs which are not at all memorable. 1st act very tedious.
Also Two worthy songs, the rest filler. Work in progress.
See it if you like "fluff" musicals, silly stories, enthusiastic performers and messages about USA as a culturally diverse country.
Don't see it if you expect a lot of laughs, an above average musical score and silly farces only if they are very funny.
See it if This show features a stellar cast doing its best with unworthy material. There's a decent show in here trying to get out, but it needs to
Don't see it if decide if it's a slapstick comedy, a romance, or an American allegory. It could be any of them, but right now it's not doing them well
See it if you are hard of hearing and want to see something that could be good with a lot of workshopping + a dose of chemistry between the actors.
Don't see it if weird and thin plot doesn't appeal and you don't have ear plugs. Singers were great + songs good but overmiking ruined the aesthetic appeal
See it if you want great singing. And to see immigrants try to make a better life for themselves and others. It's a show with future potential.
Don't see it if you like overly long shows. It has too many silly unneeded scenes. And if you want a funny show see something else. It needs lots of work
See it if The actors in this production are very talented. The voices are just amazing. The music is so so and predictable. There is plenty to enjoy
Don't see it if The characters are comic or cartoon like except the lead. The relationships don’t come across as true. Lots of $$ spent but for a weak story
See it if you are willing to go with an absurd, shallow unworkable plot with insultingly simple wrongheaded stereotypes.
Don't see it if you can’t ignore that the main plot is aggravatingly wrong. The lead woman not stunning and the lead man not plain so constant distraction.
See it if You don't mind an off Broadway show that still has a lot of quirks to work out but has promise. You enjoy seeing a work in progress
Don't see it if You need the sound quality and tone to be consistent and pleasant throughout. You aren't a fan of over acting. You want a clear plot
