About the show

"I Spy A Spy" is a wacky musical comedy about immigration, unexpected romance, espionage, and the best chicken-tikka pizza in NYC. More…

From the show:

In a “melting pot” neighborhood in Hell’s Kitchen, José Rodriguez, an undocumented Mexican delivery guy has an American Dream – to become “a someone”. Alina Orlova, a beautiful but inept Russian spy, also has an American dream – to save the family’s “Fluff N’ Fold". Speeding through one hilariously preposterous plot twist after another, José and Alina embark on a wild adventure to fulfill their destinies – and live the American Dream!

I Spy A Spy is a wacky comedy of immigration, unexpected romance, espionage, and the best chicken-tikka pizza in NYC. It takes us on a musical rollercoaster ride (on which our duo encounters Mexican Thugs, Russian spies, a Pakistani pizza proprietor, a Korean deli owner, and the Department of Homeland Security!), while lovingly examining the power of the American Dream, the challenges we all face, and the universal love for “home”!

Long, Disappointing, Strong voices, Unfocused plot, Uneven tone

See it if you love all musicals. Some good performances, given weak material. Nothing makes sense, even in this created world. Tone varies wildly.

Don't see it if you want a coherent, meaningful story. Also, if you want strg music/lyrics. How did the show get this far w/o a decent book? Clever set.

Fluffy, Bromidic, Unfocused, Disappointing, Earnest

See it if u want a goofy, innocuous comedy about immigrant life in NYC with some catchy songs, an endless series of madcap plots & a touch of gravity.

Don't see it if you expect a meaningful, fully-realized musical about immigration & acceptance; you hope for a coherent caper; you appreciate subtlety.

Also Stereotypes abound, confounding plot points proliferate, the overstuff... Read more Read less

Diverse cast, Schizoid, Tiresome plot, Some good songs

See it if you like to see all the new musicals that come along.

Don't see it if you like musicals to have a comprehensible book.

Cheap set, Confusing, Cliched, Banal

See it if The lead lady is a great singer.

Don't see it if Rest of cast is amateurish & one-dimensional. Plot ridiculous & hard to follow. Way too long at 2 hrs 20 min. Closing over a month early!!

Banal, Slow, Sweet, Great singing, Disappointing

See it if you want sweet off-Bway musical by hardworking, talented cast with good voices. Clever and simple sets, visually appealing.

Don't see it if Anodyne music; occasionally clever lyrics. Show TOO LONG: should be 60-75min show - NOT 2hrs20min. Painfully over-amplified & sharp.

Also Over-amplification had audience members putting fingers in ears - and ... Read more Read less

Quirky, Funny, Entertaining, Disappointing, Cliched

See it if you want a silly yet fairly entertaining farce.

Don't see it if you want a more serious or elaborately staged production.

Intellectually insulting, Boring, Loony plot, Solid acting and voices

See it if you don't mind spending 2 1/2 hours at a show that should be 90 minutes at most.

Don't see it if unless you can see if for free & will want to waste time on a show that pretends US immigration laws & borders don't matter.

Great singing, Funny, Dizzying, Ambitious, Clever

See it if you want to see a work in progress. The story is interesting and the lead is great but the show needs some serious editing.

Don't see it if You want an intelligent show that makes you think.

Puny, Slow, Disappointing, Overrated

See it if for plain musical entertainment. Pretty good set, singing and few laughs.

Don't see it if seeking fast paced polished top notch musical.

Also Expect to climb stairs.

Indulgent, Great singing, Great acting, Confusing, Ambitious

See it if Odd mix of "In The Heights" and "Caprice" with a touch of "Reservoir Dogs." Doesn't really gel, but that cast isn't to blame.

Don't see it if Cast gives it their all, not revealing whether they think it makes any sense (it doesn't). Seems to have been in the works for a while (fax

Also machines? pay phones?). Overamplified, which makes it louder if not cl... Read more Read less

Disappointing, Slow, Entertaining, Great singing, Cliched

See it if wonderful and energetic cast with great singing and personalities from the leads and supporting cast.

Don't see it if Totally banal dialogue and predictable story that doesn't match the cleverness of many of the songs.

Uninspired, Fluffy, Slow, Cliched, Disappointing

See it if You want a predictable sitcom style show that feels rather old fashioned with its sense of cops and robbers/Cold War Russia style comedy.

Don't see it if You’re looking for something fresh, fun and funny. This feels like a late night slog through TVLand.

Also I’m sorry to say even the talent doesn’t begin to save this one. There... Read more Read less

Quirky, Disappointing, Good singing, Uneven, Slow

See it if You want an easy semi charming musical with solid performances. It doesn’t know if it wants to be a screwball comedy or deep drama.

Don't see it if You want a well polished show. This is good but longer than it needs to be.

Fluffy, Slow, Cliched, Entertaining

See it if Hard working ensemble giving their all to make this play a success. Uneven acting and singing - a few very good. Needs bigger band & sets.

Don't see it if Cute idea but play needs work - cut some dialogue and certainly some songs which are not at all memorable. 1st act very tedious.

Also Two worthy songs, the rest filler. Work in progress.

Cliched, Insipid, Fluffy, Disappointing, Intelligent

See it if a work in progress that needs a a lot of editing. Way too long and the opening number never ends.

Don't see it if the score goes nowhere. Each song sounded like the previous one heard,

During previews
Not funny enough, Mediocre songs, Fluffy, Silly, Enthusiastic cast

See it if you like "fluff" musicals, silly stories, enthusiastic performers and messages about USA as a culturally diverse country.

Don't see it if you expect a lot of laughs, an above average musical score and silly farces only if they are very funny.

During previews
Disappointing, Fluffy, Slow, Cliched

See it if You enjoy a predictable, cliched, uninspired, and slow musical. It’s more like a sit com.

Don't see it if You want something fresh and original. Although the actors have talent, they do not have a good script. The songs all sounded the same.

During previews
Scattered, Underwritten, Fluffy, Great singing

See it if This show features a stellar cast doing its best with unworthy material. There's a decent show in here trying to get out, but it needs to

Don't see it if decide if it's a slapstick comedy, a romance, or an American allegory. It could be any of them, but right now it's not doing them well

During previews
Some funny moments, some good songs, Great singing

See it if you are hard of hearing and want to see something that could be good with a lot of workshopping + a dose of chemistry between the actors.

Don't see it if weird and thin plot doesn't appeal and you don't have ear plugs. Singers were great + songs good but overmiking ruined the aesthetic appeal

During previews
Slow, Funny, Disappointing, Entertaining, Great singing

See it if The actors in this production are very talented. The voices are just amazing. The music is so so and predictable. There is plenty to enjoy

Don't see it if The characters are comic or cartoon like except the lead. The relationships don’t come across as true. Lots of $$ spent but for a weak story

During previews
Relevant, Great singing, Dizzying, Disappointing

See it if you want great singing. And to see immigrants try to make a better life for themselves and others. It's a show with future potential.

Don't see it if you like overly long shows. It has too many silly unneeded scenes. And if you want a funny show see something else. It needs lots of work

During previews
Bad costumes, Good singing, Insipid, Stereotypes galore, Doesn’t quite work

See it if you are willing to go with an absurd, shallow unworkable plot with insultingly simple wrongheaded stereotypes.

Don't see it if you can’t ignore that the main plot is aggravatingly wrong. The lead woman not stunning and the lead man not plain so constant distraction.

Also Both lead characters could sing well, but a note to the developers... ... Read more Read less

"I'm not much of a conspiracy theorist, but you're never going to convince me that 'I Spy a Spy' isn't the fruit of a plot by Julian Assange and Russian hackers (assisted, maybe, by Kim Jong Un), aimed at undermining America's theatrical way of life."

"At a time when there's such turmoil at out borders and disagreement within, it takes a good deal of courage to pen a musical that takes a lighthearted look at immigrations. But Jamie Jackson and So Hee Youn's musical somehow does that with charm and humor."
