"I Spy A Spy" is a wacky musical comedy about immigration, unexpected romance, espionage, and the best chicken-tikka pizza in NYC. More…
From the show:
In a “melting pot” neighborhood in Hell’s Kitchen, José Rodriguez, an undocumented Mexican delivery guy has an American Dream – to become “a someone”. Alina Orlova, a beautiful but inept Russian spy, also has an American dream – to save the family’s “Fluff N’ Fold". Speeding through one hilariously preposterous plot twist after another, José and Alina embark on a wild adventure to fulfill their destinies – and live the American Dream!
I Spy A Spy is a wacky comedy of immigration, unexpected romance, espionage, and the best chicken-tikka pizza in NYC. It takes us on a musical rollercoaster ride (on which our duo encounters Mexican Thugs, Russian spies, a Pakistani pizza proprietor, a Korean deli owner, and the Department of Homeland Security!), while lovingly examining the power of the American Dream, the challenges we all face, and the universal love for “home”!
See it if you enjoy musicals of NYC experiences that pack a punch and deliver a currently important message. Great cast works hard with low $ set.
Don't see it if you do not enjoy new musicals with rough edges that have a lot of potential. Would benefit from a full orchestra and a professional set.
See it if U really need a treat!! Tremendously talented cast with a great score + book. An old fashioned musical on a very current topic IMMIGRATION.
Don't see it if You have a hard time with stairs! If not run to get a ticket.
See it if you want to see a loopy original musical about cultural diversity, difficulties in assimilating, spies, Homeland security & various subplots
Don't see it if you're impatient. First act way too long & scattered & not particularly funny. Second act better.
See it if mostly fun musical with Russian spies, immigrants, some romance; issues of being visible vs. invisible; some good singing
Don't see it if Long. 1st act seemed like it would never end. Some over-the-top parts.
See it if You want to see a musical with some funny moments, good writing, staging and singing and be entertained by a pretty talented group.
Don't see it if You don't like musicals. You don' t have a sense of humor. You don't like comedy. You like big productions.
See it if you enjoy musicals in development about the emotional and financial plight of immigrants “of color” in USA and their drive to assimilate
Don't see it if you are bored or upset by stories about Hispanic immigrants to USA, unsubtle sexual jokes, interracial romance, or exploitation of women
See it if you like immigrant stories, to see a talented cast giving it their all. Willing to see a show that feels like a work in progress.
Don't see it if you don't have patience for songs that go on too long without providing new information. It's a clever premise that doesn't always deliver.
See it if Light musical with spy / immigrant plot using who's seen or not seen in American society: attractive white female vs lower class Mexican man
Don't see it if Rough cut. Campy humor: funny at some parts, perhaps would be more if they double downed on camp. Shy of satire (jokes don't go deep enough)
See it if You like a show with good singing, a little funny, about undocumented immigrants, and you don’t mind it being too long and a little slow.
Don't see it if You can’t walk up a lot of stairs and you want to see a play that is not too long or slow.
See it if you'll enjoy a new musical performed by a very talented cast & don't mind simple sets. A couple of good songs.
Don't see it if You dislike shows in which some cast members play multiple roles; prefer full sets. First act is too long & needs editing. 2d act better.
See it if you want to see a Broadway bound musical before it transfers
Don't see it if you are hyper politically correct and don't understand the use of stereotypes in order to knock them down.
See it if you want to see an entertaining musical about life in NYC for an immigrant, with a spy twist
Don't see it if you're not interested in immigration issues, don't enjoy funny musicals.Lots of stairs:down to bathroom; up,up,down to theater.Worth climbing
See it if You liked In Transit, you appreciate a campy good time with some solid vocals and a few moments of great choreo, playful, pretty polished
Don't see it if You can't suspend disbelief or want a highly nuanced show grounded in reality
See it if you want a charming, overlong, tuneful, madcap experience of immigrants in the Big A - at first paranoia abounds, then is resolved in Act 2.
Don't see it if you want a finished work, although this has potential if trimmed by a third, and sad that if it should transfer leads who aren't names won't
See it if you want to be entertained by very talented cast in an intimate setting. Staging was smart for its size & cast works hard to deliver its msg
Don't see it if you’ll be offended or dislike ethnic jokes or political incorrectness.
See it if You want to see a great production in a simple setting, beautiful storyline wt wonderful vocals, amazing talented cast. 2 hrs went so fast.
Don't see it if You do not like musicals or romantic stories.,looking for a bigger production then this is not your thing.
