About the show

The original Broadway hit production is back to celebrate its 10th anniversary. This five-time Tony Award-nominated musical features an electric score full of classic ‘80s rock anthems. More…

"Rock of Ages" tells the story of a small-town girl, a city boy, and a rock ‘n’ roll romance on the Sunset Strip. But when the bar where rock reigns supreme is set to be demolished, it’s up to these wannabe rockers and their band of friends to save the day – and the music. "Rock of Ages" features such hits as "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," "I Wanna Know What Love Is," "Here I Go Again," "Don't Stop Believin’," and many more.

Nostalgic (for some), Great singing, Banal, Insipid, Fluffy

See it if you enjoy 80s hair band karaoke; you "Can't fight this feeling" for "Nothin' but a good time".

Don't see it if you don't have some drinks before (and during) the show; you prefer erudition to pure, unabashed frivolity.

Also This was a really hard show to score... Production-wise, this 10th ann... Read more Read less

Cliched, Insipid, Great performances, Weak story, Fun music

See it if you love 80s music and don't care that the songs are weaved around a laughably bad story line. If you can let that go, you'll have fun

Don't see it if you want a decent plot and any sort of character development. While it may have been fun, it could have been so much better

Also I LOVE 80s music and I should have loved this show, but I just couldn'... Read more Read less

Fluffy, Funny, Cliched, Banal, Delightful

See it if you want a cheesy show with 80s rock music and over-the-top acting.

Don't see it if you want a more serious show with three-dimensional characters and a more substantive plot.

Booh’s 4th step cousin twice removed, Tongue in cheek but still stupid, A walk down 80s rock memory lane, Cheesecake, A very off off broadway caliber show

See it if classic 80s rock is your go to satellite station. You’re a teen (or DOM) being given free range to ogle a woman w/o being called out.

Don't see it if arm waving, shot drinking, singing along people annoy you. Especially if it’s typically your dumb luck they’ll be in front / back of you.

Also Ok, someone has to explain this one. People panned BOOH but absolutely... Read more Read less

Hokey, Disappointing, Dated

See it if you love 80s rock and like to sing along. The story is too hokey for words, the jokes are dumb, but the rock is good. And loud.

Don't see it if You don't like loud rock music or dialog/plot meant only to hold the songs together. Lots of old fans in the audience; I was not one of them

Banal, Funny

See it if you're pretty drunk and want a fun night out. Or if you're not much of a theatergoer.

Don't see it if you don't want to sit with people who treat a musical like it's a concert.

Slow, Entertaining, Funny, Disappointing

See it if You know the music

Don't see it if You don’t like rock music or are a kid who doesn’t know the music!

Disappointing, Banal, Overrated, Fluffy, Dated

See it if like 80's hair band music - some insipid comedic moments - if you like broadway spoofs - want to waste an afternoon

Don't see it if dislike "poser" 80's hair band rock'n'roll - looking for something fairly intelligent

Not sure about this one

See it if You like a fun romp with dialogue, a few corny jokes, and don’t care about a through line

Don't see it if If you mind explicit sexual activity, if you like above average writing or performing.

Great singing, Cliched, Banal

See it if Great classic rock score, a lot of fun for "straight bros" and others who may not be typical Broadway audience members.

Don't see it if If you want anything you have to think about. It's like eating cotton candy. Just kind of disappears.

Ear-splitting, Entertaining, Quirky

See it if You like loud classic rock music

Don't see it if You show up without ear plugs. To paraphrase Come on Hear the Noise. Let's get "loud, Loud, LOUD!"

Slow, Great staging, Cliched

See it if you are nostagic for rock and just want some light entertaintment

Don't see it if you are allergic to product placements as this show feels like a series of commercials; or are looking for something serious

Funny, Overrated, Entertaining

See it if you enjoy 80s nostalgia and rock music.

Don't see it if you think the 80s were cheesy, or if you're looking for a serious drama.

Fluffy, Overrated, Excruciating, Disappointing, Cliched

See it if You you like a cheesy storyline and not great acting or singing. I guess if you like rock music you may enjoy it although I love rock music

Don't see it if You expect to hear rock songs sung well by professional actors. You expect a good story line. You want to keep your hearing.

Banal, Disappointing, Raunchy, Funny, Cliched

Don't see it if I wasn’t impressed with the music organization and quality.

During previews
Disappointing, Great singing, Banal

See it if I expected much more from this production. I found it predictable and uninspired. The actors had great voices, but the plot was weak.

Don't see it if if you are expecting a spectacular, electrifying ,and memorable show. It is not.

During previews
Fun, Fluffy, Quirky, Funny, Entertaining

See it if you love rock music, want a fun night out, and want to bop along to the music in your seat. This show is fun, irreverent,

Don't see it if you'll be annoyed by unruly audience members. This one attracts an offbeat, nontraditional crowd. But if you can join in, you'll love it.

For a previous production
Dated, Cliched

See it if you want to relive rock music from your past and want a decent plot

Don't see it if you expect nuanced writing or witty dialogue

For a previous production
Cliched, Dated, Edgy, Loud

See it if you like LOUD rock music, too tight costumes and melodramatic acting.

Don't see it if you value your eardrums.

For a previous production
Cliched, Funny, Fluffy

See it if You love the 80s and all that entails. Jukebox musical all day.

Don't see it if You want any substance whatsoever. It's good karaoke with a mildly amusing story & that's about it.

For a previous production
Funny, Refreshing, Jukebox musical

See it if you love all things 80s! The music is fun and the show is lively and entertaining.

Don't see it if you want to bring your kids to a show! There is some pretty vulgar content.

For a previous production
Funny, Entertaining, Loud, Banal, Indulgent

Don't see it if plot is thin, and sometimes it was just too loud, and headache inducing.

See it if you like 80s music.

Don't see it if You are looking for a deep theater piece.

For a previous production
Cliched, Disappointing, Indulgent

See it if You're an 80's kid and reliving the music is enough

Don't see it if You don't like gratuitous storylines that make little sense

"You go to 'Rock of Ages' for its music, not its plots…or its string of incessantly raunchy juvenilia…The music, though, if it's up your alley, certainly shivers the timbres [sic!] with a succession of vocally explosive and physically dynamic performances."
