Encores! presents a staged concert of the 1954 musical comedy that reshapes the myths of 'The Iliad' and 'The Odyssey' into an all-American fable.

Helen of Troy as a bored housewife? Ulysses as a dashing hero of the Spanish-American War? This whimsical and ambitious musical offers all that and more as it conjures up the days when pie-baking contests were cutthroat and lovers eloped in hot-air balloons. Despite its brief run, John Latouche and Jerome Moross’ show was hailed by critics, and introduced the classic torch song “Lazy Afternoon.”

Entertaining, Disappointing

See it if you're curious about this cult musical. Great voices, orchestrations, dancers. It may be another 63 years before this chance comes again!

Don't see it if you don't like opera-tinged musicals, need a straightforward plot, & don't know Greek myths. It's a cult musical for a reason; buyer beware.

See it if Good songs, fantastic singing. Overall good show. 1st act (Iliad) is solid fun clever & understandable.

Don't see it if 2nd act (Odyssey) is very confusing and unfocussed. Only a good knowledge of the original kept me interested. Read more

Great singing, Dated

See it if adore seeing musical rarities like Golden Apple. Great cast and Mikaela Bennett and Barton Cowpertwaite wowed me as did the music.

Don't see it if You like the full out big Broadway musical and a great book and witty lyrics are a must.
