See it if The music is great. The book is not. The performers are incredibly talented. There's just not much there when the music stops.

See it if you like phenomenally sung songs by phenomenal performers...And you like your theater with a stroooooong touch of religion.
Don't see it if you don't like barely comprehensible stories, patchwork framing, and were expecting more considering all the hype.
See it if you want to see some people singing their faces off in a show that is more like a rock concert.

See it if You are interested in a fictional rise of a great Black musician and the son who follows in his wake. A story with dense family dynamic.
