"An overproduced, artistically underweight show that seems little more than a corny, faux-nostalgia, cruise ship extravaganza...This was the decade of widespread drug use, civil rights struggles, political assassinations, sexual freedom, Viet Nam, and so many other major issues. ‘Trip of Love’ has a conceptual emptiness that only makes more vivid how great an opportunity was overlooked in giving the show historical relevance."

"The flimsy storyline is the fabricated excuse for extravagant production numbers...From start to finish, the 'Trip of Love' cast members smile from ear to ear as if their paychecks depend on it. The non-stop grinning is more than might eventually be said of audiences who either remember the TV shows the enterprise is echoing or who wouldn't be interested in exposure to them now."

"Thankfully for the 'Trip of Love' team there are smaller stakes involved because what creator James Walski has on his hands is a big ol’ flop...Sadly the style has left New York to make way for work that is more thought-provoking and smart. 'Trip of Love' should be shopping themselves to Las Vegas or a cruise ship. Had there been a through line in the journey, perhaps this is all a different story but in its current form, 'Trip of Love' misses the mark. There’s no need for confetti here."

"It’s a garish frolic that’s relentlessly entertaining and bolstered by some unexpectedly affecting moments…I found the proceedings to be elevated by the affection it demonstrates for this momentous decade...It also throbs with a great and unanticipated appreciation of the musicality of the pop songs of the period. Then there’s the cast, whose talents are pretty much jaw-dropping, working with great skill, energy and enthusiasm to deliver a damn exciting show."

"When a director spends a paragraph explaining the story, he’s essentially admitting that what he’s put on stage isn’t clear. Walski also takes the easy way out, for there’s no simpler platform on which to build a show than 'a dream'...At least the songs that Warski chose demonstrate that the average hit of the ‘60s and ‘70s was substantially better than the musical gruel we’re fed today...As is almost always the case in shows like this, the situations don’t always fit the pre-existing lyrics."

"Attention baby boomers: Here is a show for all of you. Even your Broadway boycotting husbands will enjoy this one...There are 28 groovy tunes in total, and with each fabulous tune, a costume change that could fill the Fashion Week runway and then some. There really are no stars in this ensemble cast, everyone takes the center stage with their perfectly chiseled bodies and synchronized movements. This cast is having a great time with this, and it shows."

"There’s very little of the anguish of those days incorporated into this show, and for the most part, that’s OK. Where 'Trip Of Love' goes off the rails is the jarring misinterpretation of the most seminal music of the times....While 'Trip of Love' is obviously meant for sheer entertainment, it’s also important to be able to reflect on the tempestuous time period it represents."

"Potential audience members need to take a step back and ask if the point of a piece like this is to entertain or tell an accurate story of a complex decade. If it’s the former, then 'Trip of Love' is successful, but if it’s the latter, there are some gaping holes that over simplify complex emotions and history. "
