About the show

As part of BAM's Next Wave Festival, this new translation directed by Ivo Van Hove features Juliette Binoche as the rebellious and intense Antigone. More…

When her dead brother is decreed a traitor, his body left unburied beyond the city walls, Antigone refuses to accept this most severe of punishments. Defying her uncle who governs, she dares to say "No." Forging ahead with a funeral alone, she places personal allegiance before politics, a tenacious act that will trigger a cycle of destruction.

Absorbing, Great acting, Great staging, Great writing, Intense

See it if You are okay with seeing a dark play. Don't expect to laugh. Follow the story line. Gripping.

Don't see it if You are looking for comedy.

68
Opera thrown in, Confusing, Indulgent, Lazy, Disappointing

See it if Seemed labour of love by self directing lead who, though good actress, was 2 old. Antigone MUST b a young woman. Opera throw in 4 no reason~

Don't see it if Was a lazy production-no effort w/staging, props, lighting, or costume. Age of "2 young lovers" being near 40 was distracting/play no sense~

78
Exquisite, Intelligent, Slow, Resonant, Arid

See it if an anti-Greek-ish tragedy entices. Conversational more than cathartic. Modern dress. Timeless words, deeds. Always intelligent & beautiful.

Don't see it if you'll find deliberate pacing, projections & modern music that may distract, a star performance that isn't all that, & talktalktalk agony.

55
Confusing, Edgy, Overrated, Slow, Glacial

See it if (Saw in Edinburgh) You really insist on seeing a different take on this Greek classic. Go see other productions if you like Van Hove.

Don't see it if Yea, skip this one. Zero intensity, pace was horrible. I love Antigone. I was really bored. Even Binoche's talent can't save it. Set was ok.

67
Ambitious, Clever, Confusing, Intelligent, Resonant

See it if you enjoy political statements disguised in the form of a Greek tragedy. Cleverly presented as a modern day parable. No costumes, no sets.

Don't see it if you should be up on the Greek classic, especially at the end when a single actor sums up the finale with mumbled pentameter speech.

80
Slow, Thought-provoking, Intense

See it if This is a very dark play. It's based on the greek tragedy. But I left there moved and in awe of the cast. Original sets.

Don't see it if It's a bit hard to follow at times. Very dark. Very depressing. Very moving.

88
Exquisite, Enchanting, Resonant

See it if It's a timely reinterpretation of a Classic myth. Outstanding performances.

Don't see it if This is not for the average theater goer. It's for the thoughtful, engaged spectator.

68
Absorbing, Edgy, Intelligent

See it if you like classic think pieces and the original world's worse family Thanksgiving.

Don't see it if you don't to sit through about 6 suicides.

Profound, Thought-provoking, Resonant, Absorbing, Intense

See it if Like highly stylized, dramatic interactions - if fitful & eruptive? The chorus is integrated into the story, playing characters when re-

Don't see it if quired. There's no sing-song Greek chorus here - perhaps, it's missed. This is modern, sleek staging w/ filmed projections and eerie music.

Ambitious, Great acting, Great staging

See it if Ivo Van Hove's direction as always is superb and Juliette Binoche stunning. But pacing a bit long and hard to hear in balcony.

Don't see it if you prefer comedies and fast paced shows.

"In portraying this tale of civic and private wills at loggerheads, Mr. van Hove’s 'Antigone' unfolds with the clinical detachment of a professor of anatomy cutting into a universal cadaver...'Antigone' is more narcotizing than upsetting. This is not for want of heavy emoting from the ensemble. M...

"Thoughtful, measured and more than a little dull, this 'Antigone' is not so much melodrama as meh-drama...Despite its contemporary relevance, the play suffers here from the mannered, modernistic approach of the acclaimed Belgian director...It's not just the modern dress and the set, or the ever-...
