About the show

This new musical addresses the heroin epidemic among American high schoolers through the story of an unlikely friendship between two seniors, a recovering heroin addict and a misunderstood teen genius. More…

From the show:

CONTACT HIGH, an original new musical from Kyle Reid Hass and Jeremy Swanton, tells the story of the unlikely friendship between Jean Simon - a drug dealer and recovering heroin addict - and Haley Walter Keys - a misunderstood teen genius with a severe phobia of physical human contact. As Jean fights to get clean and break her ties with a dangerous drug cartel, she inspires Haley to overcome his fears.

Drawing inspiration from the teen angst musicals that got Kyle and Jeremy through high school, and a testament to the resilience one can find in the hope of a better tomorrow, CONTACT HIGH is a new rock musical for a new generation.

Convoluted, Jejune, Great singing, Well-intentioned, Earnest

See it if you want to see a stage full of talented young singers give their all for a confusing, underdeveloped, overlong new high school musical.

Don't see it if u hope to follow the convoluted plots & fickle motives, care about the reductive characters, or leave humming the overstuffed score.

Also There's potential here, all of it evident in the fairly enjoyable Act ... Read more Read less

Heartfelt, Catchy score, Ridiculous plot

See it if you’re a big fan of the teen-angst genre of musicals that follow in the tracks of “Spring Awakening.”

Quirky, Ambitious, Entertaining

See it if you love the teen musical genre. The songs were fun and the cast did quite a lot with the small set and lack of wings. The story is thin.

Don't see it if you don't care about angsty teens needing to fit in while also being a mystery with a missing teen and touches of heroin addiction. A lot!

Quirky, Rock musical, Disappointing, Confusing

See it if A load high-energy rock musical on a stage to small. Actors that try hard to entertain you w/ not the best storyline.

Don't see it if If you don’t want a loud musical. Don’t want a plate about drug problems. A feel good traditional musical

Also Sometimes hard to understand

Ambitious, Interesting, Great singing, Confusing, Banal

See it if You want to see High School Musical meets Rent. It's basically that.

Don't see it if You are expecting "Rent" levels of writing skill. The cast is incredible the writing needs a lot of work.

Also I'm torn on this one. On one hand there are genuinely A LOT of things ... Read more Read less

Intense, Dizzying, Thought-provoking, Resonant

See it if You love new pop/rock musicals and intense subject matter. Also if you want to support new, talented musical theatre writers and performers!

Don't see it if You are triggered by heavy subject matter including addiction, gunshots, and murder. It is also very loud so bring earplugs!

Confusing, Disappointing, Ambitious

See it if A show that is to small a stage to have so many characters. Needs a bigger stage. Good actors in a mish mash show. Actors gave best efforts.

Don't see it if A show that is convoluted, confusing at times and goes nowhere to a solid point entry. If you want an uplifting show that is easy to follow

Don't see it if The ideas, music and staging are too big for this very small space. The venue really hurts what the creators are striving for.

"'Contact High' plays like the most lurid CW teen-bait series; it's a four-lane pile-up of sudsy plot developments more likely to induce giggles than tears of empathy…It's all agony, all the time, and so straight-faced that you can't believe it isn't a spoof."

"The multiple plot threads are tangled, the characters lack depth or charm, their dialogue sounds like anything but what high school students would say, and some of the lyrics are borderline dreadful. Many songs are shouted, and the sole standout performance belongs to Thoresen."
