About the show

Atlantic presents this raucous retelling of the rise and fall of Pasadena’s most groundbreaking 80s rockers told through the foggy lens of a lonely, out of work MTV-VJ. More…

"Eddie and Dave" is a gender-bending new play by Amy Staats ("Miles for Mary," Atlantic’s Tow Playwright-in-Residence) about hubris, friendship, family, fame, musical genius, and what happens when the person you need is the one you find most irritating.

Disappointing, Fluffy, Insipid, Quirky, Banal

See it if If your into the band, the personalities that clashed and the genre of music. If you want to relive your MTV glory days.

Don't see it if You want a well written play that has good acting or story to it. Women play the men in this show.

Interesting set design, Amusing effort, Light-hearted fun

See it if Bioplay with actresses and actor in opposite gender roles telling a parody of the Van Halen band’s story.

Don't see it if Unless you are intrigued by gender-switching casting. Don’t expect to hear very much Van Halen.

Lovingly conceived, Moderately clever, Indulgent

See it if A cross gender affectionate paean to a dramatic talented hair band.

Don't see it if The drama never rises to anything authentic. Is it played for laughs or pathos?

A kitchy bio isn't a play

See it if you love Van Halen, will tolerate good actors in reverse drag, a great set and special effects and were alive during their fame

Don't see it if you expect new insights, or expect a real play (as opposed to one person's obsession with a youthful fantasy).

Overrated, Disappointing, Dated, Cliched, Banal

See it if You were a super fan of Van Halen

Don't see it if You don’t like to amateurish performances. Its only redeeming feature was the actor playing Valerie Bertinelli.

Mildly amusing, Entertaining, Quirky, Increasingly dull

See it if enjoy a mildly amusing play with some good moments that unfortunately gets a little bland. Some interesting ideas but over stretched.

Don't see it if you expect to hear Van Halen songs. Oddly not much music for a play about a band (though I suspect rights or lack thereof were the cause),

Fluffy, Silly, Good lighting design and projection

See it if You are a fan of Van Halen or you want to watch three women campily play male roles.

Don't see it if You are looking for something thought-provoking or something very funny.

Also I'm surprised Atlantic Theatre produced this. It's a very silly, fluff... Read more Read less

Pedestrian, Intermittently funny, Thin, Charmless

See it if you’re an aging heavy metalhead nursing a desire to live your glory years over, with girls playing the guys this time, & vice versa.

Don't see it if you are almost anyone else.

Also Playwright, director & creative team have all done exciting, vital wor... Read more Read less

If you're really into van halen, david lee roth & the mtv scene, you can get into this show; if, like me, you're not, skip it!

See it if u want to go behind the scenes 4 these rock stars; enthusiastic performances; amusing having roles played by actors of opposite sex

Don't see it if dull; only playing snippets from hits, fails to demonstrate why group was so popular; devoid of irony, humor esp re narcissistic Roth

Also There are two basic ways to make a successful show about a rock and ro... Read more Read less

“Larky if bloated sketch of a bio-comedy...Based on the original guitarist and lead singer of the chart-topping band Van Halen...The female cast members...appear to be having a high old time finding the testosterone within their characters’ teased hair...Initially, this is pretty funny...Ultimate...

“Staats’s unabashedly goofy rock bioplay...Affection for music and the ridiculous past are the columns on which Staats has built her comedy...The music hews perilously close to Van Halen’s classic bangers...The attempts to take something that feels bootleg and turn it into something...leave the p...

"Staats has written a sincere but simple love letter, a cheerful act of fan fiction that bubbles along enjoyably enough without ever really becoming more than the sum of its parts...The twist...is that the boys...are all embodied by women...At times it’s great fun to watch the women...At other ti...
