Staten Island's Harbor Lights Theater Company presents the all-time classic, 'Gypsy,' about "backstage mother" Mama Rose and her daughter Louise, who triumphantly emerges from Rose’s shadow to become a star. More…
Described by The New York Times as America's greatest musical, this is the critically-acclaimed story of Gypsy Rose Lee, based on her 1957 memoir. In it, her aggressive stage mother Mama Rose pushes her two young daughters into the entertainment industry, with little success. The only offer for older daughter Louise is at a burlesque house, and she takes to it, transforming herself into the popular Gypsy Rose. As Louise gains notoriety, she grows tired of her mother's influence. Starring TONY nominee Sally Mayes, this Sondheim classic features all the standards and takes audiences through the 1920s, when vaudeville was dying and burlesque was born.
"Though the production gets off to a slow start, the show finds its footing in the middle of the first act...The creative team needs to work out a few mic and sound issues, including sets that become thunderous distractions as they're rolled offstage. But despite the kinks, the answer to Baby June's question 'May We Entertain You?' is yes, this 'Gypsy' sure can." Full Review

See it if You have a pulse. This classic is so much fun, with the iconic role of Mama Rose, great Sondheim songs and original characters abound.
Don't see it if Really? Who doesn't want to see Gypsy, in any of its incarnations. There is no reason not to see this treasure of a show.
See it if You love Bernstein and Sondheim and Imelda Stanton. This "Gypsy" provides a more communal feel--it isn't just a one woman show. Superb.
