Staten Island's Harbor Lights Theater Company presents the all-time classic, 'Gypsy,' about "backstage mother" Mama Rose and her daughter Louise, who triumphantly emerges from Rose’s shadow to become a star.

Described by The New York Times as America's greatest musical, this is the critically-acclaimed story of Gypsy Rose Lee, based on her 1957 memoir. In it, her aggressive stage mother Mama Rose pushes her two young daughters into the entertainment industry, with little success. The only offer for older daughter Louise is at a burlesque house, and she takes to it, transforming herself into the popular Gypsy Rose. As Louise gains notoriety, she grows tired of her mother's influence. Starring TONY nominee Sally Mayes, this Sondheim classic features all the standards and takes audiences through the 1920s, when vaudeville was dying and burlesque was born.

See it if You've never seen Imelda Staunton play Mama Rose--find it NOW on PBS. She plays it to a whole new level. Gut-wrenching in her portrayal.
