Act Three - The Reviews

"It's not really that good, but it's lighthearted, silly, and delivers what it promises: entertainment. It's not really a musical, nor is it a play; it's really just like an extended 'SNL; skit...The ensemble is OK. In various combinations they did their shtick, but I think even the performers know who their audience is and how utterly unimportant it is to be good. For the price of a TDF ticket it was well worth the 75 minutes of humor. Much more and even a tourist might be disappointed." Full Review

Backstage

"This "Newsical" could be more consistent, but the cast goes a long way toward redeeming its deficiencies. And any town with an often funny topical revue in it is a happier place." Full Review

Theatermania

"The smart and spiffy new edition of NEWSical the Musical, now at The Kirk Theatre, makes it abundantly clear that the heir to the musical comedy revue format that was owned for so long by Forbidden Broadway has finally been found. Directed at a wonderfully furious pace the show will have audiences laughing from start to finish." Full Review

LA Splash

"Luckily, we found a fun and witty show that we can recommend. NEWSical the Musical is a light and fun romp through the news of the day with four talented performers that you can’t help but like. They take various news items of the day – and turn them into songs and sketches that garner loads of laughs from the audience." Full Review

The Huffington Post

"NEWSical, written by Rick Crom, is the long-running Off-Broadway musical comedy that lampoons everyone in the news from Miley Cyrus to The Pope in 90 minutes of hilarious skits and songs that update as quickly as the news changes. It's a news magazine of sorts (think more along the lines of The Daily Show than 60 Minutes) that's ever changing and always hilarious." Full Review

Cabaret Exchange

"Indeed, Newsical has much to recommend it.  Although the product I saw hasn’t yet lived up to its potential, it has a wealth of scandalous material with which to work, and might very well evolve into an enduring hit.  Let’s hope it gets there." Full Review

CurtainUp

for a previous production "I was particularly taken with Joan Rivers and Nancy Pelosi discussing the merits of Botox, a very Jewish Ruth Bader Ginsberg advising a very Latina Sonia Sotomayor on what it's like to be a Supreme (think Diana Ross), a newsflash about the mysterious case of Snow White and those suspicious and disrespectful bearded men, and President Obama trying to order pizza but stymied by all the options. Clever, Great acting, Hilarious, Entertaining, Great singing

See it if You want to have a good time and laugh a lot. You want to see a play that is relevant and pokes fun at current events and products on TV.

Don't see it if You don't want to laugh. You don't want to have a great time. You take life too seriously and don't know how to enjoy this life.

Also The writers did a fantastic job with current event stuff. I loved the ... Read more Read less

See it if Your a liberal minded person. You enjoy spoofs of events , commercials, etc from the preceding 12 months.

Great acting, Hilarious, Great singing

See it if You like laugh-out-loud skits and commercials performed by a top notch cast, and that's updated on a daily basis based on current events

Don't see it if You don't like Saturday Night Live

Clever, Indulgent, Disappointing, Entertaining, Fluffy

See it if you want a REALLY lite show; like SNL; don't mind political and p culture zingers

Don't see it if you want to see a "real" musical as this is more like an extended SNL skit; don't like political humor;

Also The show is at the same time fresh for topical news/pop culture, but s... Read more Read less

Funny, Quirky, Raunchy, Cliched, Entertaining

See it if You like Mad TV or Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update (it's all sketches). You want to laugh about real topics.

Don't see it if You have high comedic expectations. You aren't up to date on current events (then you won't find what's happening on stage to be funny).

70
Funny, Clever, Overrated, Entertaining, Fluffy

See it if you like topical comedy sketches that get updated from time to time but with inconsistent quality in the ever-changing casting

Don't see it if you want something thought provoking or meaningful, this is mostly gags in revue style based on headlines, but nothing deep or meaningful

72
Funny, Dated, Entertaining

See it if you just want to poke fun at celebrities, politicians, etc. Jokes are a hit and miss, but it's still a fun show overall

Don't see it if you are not up-to-date on current events or "celebrities". The skits will only be funny if you know the people they are portraying.

Funny, Clever, Relevant, Great writing, Hilarious

See it if I see this show periodically because they keep their skits up to date. It's so funny and the cast could rival Saturday Night Live.

Don't see it if You plan on voting for Trump.

93
Clever, Thought-provoking, Relevant, Hilarious

See it if You like comedy and current events set to music.

Don't see it if You are very politically/socially conservative, don't have a sense of humor.

Funny, Original, Great acting, Overrated

See it if You like sketch comedies like SNL. A lot of political sketches and impersonations. Great job by the actors and writers.

Don't see it if You don't follow politics or want to see a classic musical. Not as funny as expected.

70
Funny, Current affairs, musical

See it if you want a night of humor about current topics in the last year. Like impressions and can laugh at all things.

Don't see it if you don't like to laugh, easily offended or have lived under a rock for a year and don't know what's been going on in the news.

77
Funny, Clever, Intelligent, Entertaining, Very topical

See it if Fresh and funny political satire. Only problem - cast will differ from show to show. No programs.

Don't see it if you don't like to laugh or don't follow the world's foibles.

Indulgent, Uneven humor: some funny, some meh., The cast tries hard, but the material wasn't great.

See it if You like sketch comedy and topical humor. You have a passing knowledge of current news and pop culture or aren't politically thin-skinned.

Don't see it if You don't want humor that's a little raunchy. If you have to spend a lot of money on these tickets, you'll be disappointed, I think.

Also From reading the other reviews, I suspect that this show has its good ... Read more Read less

Ambitious, Quirky, Relevant, Entertaining, Great singing

See it if You enjoy topical theater that has a musical bent. Not always spot on, this show does a great job of trying to add relevant songs.

Don't see it if You have to see theater you always agree with. They lampoon EVERYONE, so come with an open mind. The theater smells damp which is unpleasant

Funny, Clever, Refreshing, Entertaining, Topical

See it if like me, you poke your own fun at the news as you watch it. This piece is a bit like Forbidden Broadway, and much better than I expected.

Don't see it if Satire is not your thing, you're so sick of the election that you're devoid of a sense of humor, having a good belly laugh is unthinkable.

70
Funny, Clever, Entertaining, Fun, Current

See it if You enjoy sketch comedy, pop culture, social commentary on current events. It's a fun night out, the cast is great at juggling lots of roles

Don't see it if You aren't interested in pop culture or politics & don't find sketch comedy funny. Some jokes I've heard before but still found a lot funny.

74
Funny, Relevant, Entertaining, Uneven, Talented performers

See it if You really need a few laughs this election season other than those provided by the Republican candidate, you enjoy political comedy

Don't see it if You are apolitical or expect a fully developed book as opposed to fun sketches and some excellent performances

90
Clever, Intelligent, Relevant, Hilarious, Entertaining

See it if It was a great revue. The impressions did not always hit the mark but the actors conveyed a sense of personalities. It moved quickly. I

Don't see it if had no time to get bored. Don't see it if you don't like political satire.

Funny, Clever, Quirky, Entertaining

See it if you like the Daily Show/Last Week Tonight, enjoy current events and the comedy surrounding them. You want a laugh!

Don't see it if you have strong political ideals, you're looking for superior singing/acting, you want a serious show.

Also NEWSical was definitely very funny at parts, a bit dragging at others,... Read more Read less

Funny, Quirky, Entertaining

See it if you are up-to-date in pop culture plus politics and enjoy comedy based on those topics.

Don't see it if you do not like political and celebrity sarcasm or if a few four-letter words woud offend you.

73
Funny, Cliched, Entertaining, Uneven

See it if It's sketch comedy set to music. Not really a musical. But it is funny, well written and current. Good music. Overall enjoyable. Good acting

Don't see it if Some sketches are clearly fillers. Sometimes you LOL sometimes you go "meh".

69
Funny, Indulgent, Fluffy

See it if you wish Saturday Night Live were hummable.

Don't see it if looking for particularly new jokes; most I could find on facebook (a few were new and great). Thin-skinned Republicans should also stay away
