About the show

Park Avenue Armory and the Old Vic present O’Neill's expressionist drama, a searing social commentary on the divide between the rich and poor in the industrial age. Starring Emmy winner and Tony nominee Bobby Cannavale. More…

Cannavale stars as Yank, an unthinking laborer searching for his place in a world controlled by the wealthy. His journey from the bowels of a transatlantic ocean liner to the wealthy neighborhoods of New York society literally revolves around the audience like the conveyor belt of a larger machine, serving as a metaphor for the struggle between the working man and the industrial complex. The revival is directed by Olivier winner Richard Jones and is based on a previous mounting he helmed in London.

Absorbing, Masterful, Great staging, Great acting

See it if you are an O'Neill fan and want to see a play staged with great skill outside the box. Top performance by Bobby Cannavale. At PAve Armory

Don't see it if you can only handle traditionally stage theater. Find O'Neill too challenging.

Masterful, Profound, Thought-provoking, Resonant, Absorbing

See it if / to see Cannavale in a tour de force; if you like O'Neill; to be immersed in a space that fits the production like a glove.

Don't see it if you're not interested in a drama about class and societal-vs-self expectations; you like your set design rather literal.

Also I loved the sound design and the expressionistic set design, especiall... Read more Read less

Edgy, Great acting, Absorbing, Brilliant

See it if you want to see an unforgettable performance in a mesmerizing production of a play as revolutionary now as it was when it was written.

Don't see it if you are looking for light entertainment. This is a powerful, avant garde production pitting blue collar against the 1%. It hits its mark.

Entertaining, Great staging, Relevant

See it if you want to experience a large scale show at the Armory! Beautiful stage pictures. Very stylized. (Expressionist) Operatic.

Don't see it if you love the play. The production loses sight of the play at times, in favor of the spectacle.

Ambitious, Great staging, Great acting

See it if you enjoy a theatrical event. Not a great O'Neill play but absolutely wonderful acting, great staging & lighting; Cannavale is superb!

Don't see it if you don't like non-traditional staging and short plays (90 minutes); otherwise its a memorable performance and staging; very visual

Great staging, Excruciating

See it if O'Neill or not, this isn't much of a play, but the staging is awe-inspiring enough and a unique use of the space to make this worth a look.

Don't see it if Go elsewhere if looking for a compelling story, sympathetic characters, and less allegory.

78
Absorbing, Great staging, Intense, Dated

See it if you relish O'Neill plays, dated as they may be, and want to see a fantastic, over-the-top production in a unique setting.

Don't see it if you don't like dated early 20th plays, with little or no humor, and unsubtle irony.

89
Relevant, Must see, Great acting, Epic, Phenomenal staging

See it if you want your mind blown by a visually stunning production. Bobby Cannavale is fantastic in a dramatic lead role. Best ape costume ever!

Don't see it if Even if you don't like O'Neill's plays (I'm not the biggest fan), this is such an amazing production, you really should see it.

Also It covers a lot of ground in 90-min. There's the main message about hu... Read more Read less
