About the Show

Part of FringeNYC: A celebration of life and love...from 'dead' black men. Hunted down, shot and killed, hung and burned, but still alive. Born, buried, and born again. Black Magic: They disappear and stay here, forever. A play with movement.

Theatre is Easy
August 21st, 2016

"Giving life to Jenkins’ poetry is a wildly talented ensemble of men. Each has a distinct voice with a striking presence on his own, but also melts effortlessly with the others. Couple this with Chessa Metz’s choreography and we get theatre that electrifies every possible nerve-ending of its audience...The piece isn’t simply a performance but a mirror that enchants, inspires, and questions its audience. 'Black Magic' achieves this masterfully."

"The stories of the slain black men are told in spoken word, stunning movement, and song with just a touch of clowning around...The uniformly brilliant cast bring the stories to redemptive catharsis that lingers long after the final scene...Mr. Jenkins, Ms. Metz and their cast have collaborated to create a moving piece of theatre that will endure beyond its time at FringeNYC 2016."

"If there is rage and sorrow in these characters’ stories, the 40 minutes of 'Black Magic' are also filled with joy and humor, music and song, thrilling movement and pithy poetry, syncopated stomping and rhythmic clapping, and even some red-nose clowning–but clowning with an edge. It is, in short, ideal for the New York International Fringe Festival–which is to say, it is a work that might not fit in anywhere else, but certainly deserves to be seen."
